Iacobus de Vetriaco tellis how on̛ a tyme a knyght þat was markid̛ with þe cros went from̛ his awn̛ place to beyond̛ þe se. Or he wente, afor̛ a grete parte of his frendis, he callid̛ aƚƚ his childer aforn̛ hym̛, & he hawsid̛ & kyssid̛ þaim frendlye, & kyssyd̛ þaim tenderly, & wepyd swetelie. So one come in & callid on̛ hym̛ & said̛; "Sur, your felows abydis you, lefe þies childer & com̛ your wayes!" And þis knyght ansswerd̛ agayn̛ & sayd̛; "I do þis to make me mor̛ hevie & sad when̛ I parte with þaim, at my mede may be þe mor̛ for þe levyng of þaim."
