Hospitalitas eciam bona temporalia
conservat.
Sigilbertus tellis how a town̛ þat hight Anthiochia was subuertyd̛ be þe sande of God̛, and be þis maner of wyse. Ther̛ was a cetysyne þerof þat was so giffen̛ vnto hospitalite and almos-dede, to so mekuƚƚ þat he wolde neuer day eate with-oute a pure man̛ or a geste. So on̛ a day hym̛ happend̛ go þurgℏ þe cetie to it was nyght, to sek̘e owder̛ a pure man̛ or a geste to eate with hym̛, and he cuthe fynd̛ none. So att þe laste he fand̛ a fayr olde man̛ standyng, & two felos with hym̛, in þe myddeste of þe cetie. And he prayed þaim com̛ & be his hostis & eate with hym̛; and [Harl. MS. Hoc responsum accepit ab eo; "Non poteras, o homo Dei, cum vostro Simeone hanc urbem saluare ne subuerteretur?"] he ansswerd̛ hym̛ in þis maner of wyse & said̛; "O, þou man̛ of God̛! þou may not with our Symond̛ safe þis cetie at it be not subuertid̛." And with þat he keste þe sudurye at he held̛ in his hand̛ opon̛ þe tone halfe of þe cetie, & onone þat halfe & aƚƚ þe howsis þerof & þai þat dwelte in þaim was destroyed̛. & he tuke agayn̛ his sudarie and wolde hafe casten̛ it on̛ þe toder halfe, and vnnethis his felows myght restren̛ hym̛ to spare it; and with þat he vanysshid̛ away. And þis was done, & þan̛ þe man̛ was passand̛ ferd̛ & went home vnto his howse, & fand̛ safe & thankid̛ God þer-of. et c̛.
