Helinandus [MS. Heliandus.] tellis of ane þat hight Taurus, þat was rewler of þe cetie of Athenys. So on̛ a tyme þe prince of Crete come vnto Athenys, & broght with hym̛ his son̛ & his ayre. And þis Taurus desyrid̛ þaim to com̛ dyne with hym̛, & so þai did̛. & he bad̛ þe
fadur sytt hym̛ down̛, and þe fadur bad his son̛ sit down̛ furste, for cauce at he had a gouernans & a maistershup̛ of þe pepuƚƚ at Rome. And þan̛ Taurus sayed̛ vnto þe prince; "Sit þou furste down̛ befor̛ þi son̛ vnto we examyn̛ þe cauce, whethir is wurthi to sit aboue att the table, þe fathur or þe son̛." And when̛ he was sett, þai sett a chayr þan̛ for his son̛. And þan̛ Taurus sayd̛ to þaim at satt abowte; "In oppen̛ placis, & þer þe son̛ hathe a reule, or a maistershupp̛, or a gouernans abown̛ þe fadur, þer it is semand̛ þat þe fathur suffer þe son̛ to hafe a prioritie. Bod att home, or in oþer privan placis, or in gude felowshupp̛ whar̛ þai walk samen, or etis samen or sittis samen, þer suld̛ aƚƚ publicaƚƚ honor and wurshup̛ sese betwix þe fadur & þe son̛, & þer suld̛ naturaƚƚ curtasy & honor be kepid̛: þat is to say, þar̛ þe son̛ suld̛ wurshup̛ þe fadur or þe mother, & lett for no thyng."
