Hillarij. De vita eius.

We rede in his Legend̛, how þat a pope þat hight Leo was dampnid̛ of heresye, and he gadurd̛ samen to a cownceƚƚ aƚƚ þe bisshopp̛[is]. And þis Hillarius come to þis cownceƚƚ vncallid̛; and þe pope hard̛ teƚƚ att he come, & warnyd̛ at no man̛ sulde rise nor giff hym̛ rowme. And when̛ he come in, þe pope said̛ vnto hym̛; "þou erte Hillarie & a Frawncℏe man̛!" And he ansswerd̛ agayn̛ & said̛; "I am̛ no Franche man̛, bod I am̛ bisshop̛ of France." And þe pope ansswerd̛ agayn̛ & said̛; "And I am̛ Leo, þe pope, and a iustis." And Hillarius ansswerd̛ hym̛ agayn̛ & sayd̛; "Thuff aƚƚ þou be Leo, yitt þou erte noght of þe trybe of Iuda; & þuff aƚƚ þou be a iustis, yitt þou sittis noȝt in þe seate of magestie." Than̛ þe pope wex wrothe, & said̛; "Bide a while

vnto I com̛ agayn̛, and I saƚƚ giff þe att þou adlis." And with þat he rase & went his ways. And Hillarius sayde; "And þou com̛ not agayn̛, who shaƚƚ answer for the?" And he answerd̛ agayn̛ & sayd̛; "Dowte not I saƚƚ com̛ agayn̛ onone, and meke aƚƚ þi pride." And he went vnto a seage, & sett hym̛ down̛ þer-on̛ to ease hym̛. And þer he feƚƚ in-to suche a flux, þat aƚƚ his bowels ran̛ oute att his hynderhend̛. And þer he deyed̛ in grete myserie. And in þe mean̛ while þis Hillarius saw att no man̛ rase vnto hym̛, and mekelie he sett hym̛ down̛ opon̛ þe erthe & sayde; " Domini est terra," et c̛. And onone, þurgℏ þe ordinance of allmighti Godd̛, þe erthe att he satt oppon̛ rase vpp̛ als hy as þe toder bisshoppis satt att was aboute hym̛. And þan̛ come tythandis at þe pope was myserablie dead̛. And þan̛ þis Hillarie rase, & confermyd̛ aƚƚ þies bisshoppis in þe trew faytℏ. & þan̛ he wente home agayn̛ in-to his awn̛ bisshoprykk.
