he had̛ bene a barn̛. So on̛ a tyme when̛ hur
husband̛ was gone of pilgramege in-to a fer land̛, as hur
son̛ lay by hur he had at do with hur, and belife sho was with
childe; & þan̛ sho wex passand̛ hevy, & had
grete sorow in hur harte, and sho feƚƚ to hur prayers as sho was
wunte to do, & besoght God & our dere Ladie to helpe hur. So
at þe laste sho traveld̛; & when̛ þe
barn̛ was vnnethis born̛, sho slew it & ekid̛
syn̛ vppon̛ syn̛, & keste it in-to a sege. And
þan̛ þe fende had despite her̛-att, and
þoght for to gar hur be destroyed̛, & made hym̛ in
habett like a clerk̘, and come afor̛ þe iugges &
þe men̛ of law, and desyrid̛ þaim to here
hym̛, & he sulde teƚƚ þaim a huge mervayle for any
man̛ to here, & a passand̛ crueƚƚ dede: "ffor
sucℏ a womman̛, at ye trow is a passand̛ halie
womman̛, is a passand̛ wikkid womman̛, & a
creweƚƚ, & fuƚƚ of syn̛. For sho conseyvid̛ a
childe of hur awn̛ son̛, & yit also when̛ it was
born̛, sho slew it & keste it into a sege." And þai
had grete merveƚƚ here-of, & said̛ þai
trowid̛ it was not so. And he bad feche hur & examyn̛
hur; "& in þe mene while make a fire, and if sho grawnt or
be convicte þer-in, latt kaste hur whik in þe fire &
burn̛ hur." And if sho wer nott, he bad̛ þaim take
and burn̛ hym̛. And sho was fechid̛ and broght
befor̛ þe iuggies & þe men̛ of law; and
þan̛ þe iuge sayd̛ vnto hur; "Womman̛, we
hafe her̛ a new prophett in Rome, & he, þuff aƚƚ
vs for-thynk̘ it gretelie, hase accusid̛ þe in grete
trispasis. And þerfor̛ þou muste owder knowlege
þi trispas, or els þou must excuse þe þeroff."
And þan̛ sho askid̛ of þe law a respecte, &
had it grawntid̛. & scho went home & made grete sorow
for hur trispas, and̛ went vnto a preste, & with hartlie
contricion̛ sho shrafe hur & told̛ hym̛ aƚƚ
how sho had done. And he saw þat scho wepid̛ & made
grete sorow, & comfurthid̛ hur, and enioynyd̛ hur in
penans to say bod one pater noster. And he bad hur at sho sulde pray
hartelie vnto our̛ dere Ladie to helpe hur. And so sho
did̛, with grete deuocion̛. And so vppon̛ þer
courte-day, sho was sent after agayn̛; & sho come [After come, n, erased.]
