Cesarius tellis how som̛ tyme þer was a pylgram̛ þat tuke sekenes, and̛ dyed in his pylgramege. And he bewitt þe preste his slavyn̛, & þe preste tuke it, bod̛ he had litle charge of þe saule. So it happend̛ afterward̛ at þis preste made hym̛ a monke in Ceustus
ordur; and as he lay on̛ a nyght in his dortur, he was ravisshid̛ in his spiritt, & had vnto þe place of paynys, þer he saw many sawlis grevuslie punysshid̛. And he hid̛ hym̛ behynd̛ þe dure. So he was war of þis slavyn̛, þer hym̛ þoght, at þe pylgram had giffen̛, and þe devuƚƚ askid̛ who aght it; & þai told̛ hym̛ at it was þe prestis at stude behynd̛ þe dure, & at a pylgram̛ had giffen̛ hym̛ itt to pray for hym̛, & he had owder liteƚƚ prayed̛ for hym̛ or noght. And þe devuƚƚ [said] [Latin MSS. ad quod diabolus.] ; "Latt vs reward̛ hym̛"; & he tuke þis slavyn̛ & putt it in hate, bulyng, stynkand̛ watir, & clappid̛ þe preste in þe face þer-with. And with þat he wakend̛ & cryed̛; "Helpe me! helpe me! ffor I am̛ so burnyd̛ þat I dye." And þe monkis his bruther rase vp & come vnto hym̛, & þai fand̛ aƚƚ his face & his head̛ burnyd̛ aƚƚ þe flessℏ nerehand̛ of, & hym̛ halfe dead̛; & þai tuke hym̛ vp & had hym̛ in-to þer ffermorye, & þan̛ he told̛ þaim þer-of. & ilk-one of þaim sayd̛ mes þat day for þis pylgram̛; & onone after þis monke amendid̛ & was als hole as he was befor̛.
