Cesarius tellis how on̛ a tyme þer was a religious man̛ þat liffid lovable emang his brethir fro his youthe vnto his age, so þat
þer was none þat was more religious þan̛ he was. So on̛ a tyme hym̛ happend̛ to faƚƚ in-to suche a sadnes & a hevynes, þat he dowtid̛ of his synnys, & feƚƚ in-to a dispayr. And he mot not be broght oute þer-of with none auctorite of scriptur, nor he mot not be broght into no hope of forgifnes, not-with-stondyng he had not done no grete syn̛. And when̛ his brethir askid̛ hym̛ what hym̛ [MS. repeats, what hym.] aylid̛ at he was fallen̛ into suche a drede & a dispayr, he ansswerd̛ agayn̛ & sayd̛; "I may not as I was wunte to do say my prayers, & þerfor̛ I am̛ ferd̛ to be dampnyd̛."
