CCXLVII.
Demones in nocte apparent in formis virorum
et mulierum.
We rede in þe 'Life of Saynt German̛' how þat on̛ a tyme he was lugid̛ on̛ a night in a howse vp of land̛; and when̛ aƚƚ had suppyd̛ þai sett þe burde agayn̛. And he had mervayle þerof and askid̛ for wham̛ þai did so. & þai told̛ hym̛ þai [MS. þat.] sett þe burd̛ for þase gude wommen̛ þatt gase on̛ nyghtis. And he thoght þat he wold̛ se whatt þai wer, & awakid̛ aƚƚ þat nyght. And aboute mydnyght he saw a multitude of fendis com̛ to þis burd̛ in form̛ & liknes of men̛ & wommen̛; and he chargid̛ þaim remow þaim, & he callid̛ vp̛ aƚƚ þe meneya in þe howse & shewid̛ þaim þies men̛ and þies wommen̛, & askid̛ þaim if þai knew any of þaim. And þai said̛ at þai knew þaim wele enogℏ, þai wer aƚƚ þer neghburghs, bothe men̛ & wyvis. And he sent vnto þer howsis at þai sayd̛ war þer, & þai þat went fand þaim in þer beddis. And þan̛ he coniurid̛ þies fendis, & þai told̛ how þai war fendis & come to dissayfe þe peple.
