We rede in 'Vitis [MS. Vitas.] Patrum' how þat
þer was a gude holie alde man̛, & xl yere he
drank̘ nevur; & evur he wulde take a vesseƚƚ &
fulfiƚƚ it with wyne & hyng it in his chawm[re] þat he
mott daylie se it. So on̛ a tyme his brethir askyd̛
hym̛ whi he did so, and he ansswerd agayn̛ & said̛,
"I do it to þis entent, þat when̛ I se þat
þing at I desire, þat with abstinens þerof I may
suffre mor̛ payn̛; and so of almyghti God I saƚƚ have
more mede."
