Abstinencia moderata pro loco et tempore displicet
diabolo.
Jacobus de Vetriaco [MS. Vetriano.] tellis how þat þer was a holie Saynt þat hight Maria de Oginiez, whilk þat oft sithes punysshid̛ hur selfe with grete abstinence. So on̛ a tyme sho refresshid̛ hur with mete, & as sho satt etand sho was war [After war, vi, erased.] of þe devuƚƚ; & with a grete [con]tenans & ane angrie he said̛ vnto hur, "Beholde þis gluton̛! how ferventlie sho etis!" And sho satt stiƚƚ & vmbethoght hur, & knew his falssett weƚƚ enogℏ, & ete on̛. & euer þe devuƚƚ wolde hafe lett hur for to hafe etyn̛, becauce he wulde sho had dyed for defawte; and ay þe mor̛ he lett hur to ete, þe mor̛ sho ete. And he saw at sho wolde not lett to ete for hym̛, bod̛ at ay þe langer he laburd hur, þe more sho ete. [&] with a grete crying & a noyse he vanyshid̛ away fro hur, & neuer after trubled̛ hur nor did̛ hur harm̛.
