CCXXIII.
Credendum non est omni spiritui antequam probandi
sint vtrum sunt ex deo vel non.
We rede in 'Vitis Patrum,' how þe devuƚƚ, made hym̛ in liknes of a gude angeƚƚ, come vnto a solitarie at his fadir vesett euer-ilk day, and bad hym̛ be war of þe devuƚƚ, for he was besy euere day to begyle hym̛; "and tomorn̛," he said̛, "he wiƚƚ come to þe in liknes of þi fadur; and þerfor̛ now venge þe on̛ hym̛, & luke at þou hase a sharpe ax redie, at when̛ he commys nere the, gif hym̛ so grete a strake on̛ þe hede att he presume no mor̛ to com̛ vnto the." And þis ankir trowid̛ þat he had bene ane angeƚƚ at had bene sent vnto hym̛ fro God Hym̛ selfe to giff hym̛ þis cownceƚƚ; & on̛ þe day after his awn̛ fadur come vnto hym̛ at vissit hym̛, and he with ane ax killid̛ hym̛, and was takyn̛ þerfor & hanged evyn̛ furtℏ-with.
