CCXVII.
Corripere debet pater filium, et prelatus
subditum.
We rede in þe same buke how þer was a yong man̛, & he was tenderlie broght vp & noþing correcte nowder of fadur nor moder when̛ he did̛ wrong; so he become a thefe, & stale grete gudis. And on̛ a tyme he was taken̛ & demyd̛ to be hanged̛: and as he was led vnto þe galos he desyrid̛ at he mott se his fadur or he dyed̛; and he was broght. And he besoght hym̛ to forgiff hym̛ aƚƚ offensis at he had made vnto hym̛, & so he did̛; & þan̛ he prayed hym̛ to kis hym̛. And as he kissid̛ hym̛, he bate of his fadur nece; and þai þat wer abowte hym̛ had grete mervayle þeroff, and said̛ ffellie vnto hym̛ þerfor. And he ansswerd̛ þaim agayn̛ & said̛; "I sulde hafe done hym̛ more skathe and̛ I had myght, ffor he is cauce of my dead̛; for he chastid̛ not me when̛ I was yong, bod let me faƚƚ to gouernans & to mysreule at I am now dampned̛ to my dead̛ for̛, & mon be hanged̛."
