Benedictus spiritum elacionis a iuuene expulit.
Saynt Gregur tellis þat on̛ ane evynyng when̛ þis holie man̛ was at his supper, þer stude befor̛ hym̛ a yong gentylman̛ þat come of a hy kynrid̛, & helde þe candyƚƚ. So þis yong man̛ was prowde, & þoght scorn̛ þat he sulde hold̛ þe candyƚƚ, & sayd̛ with-in hym̛ selfe on̛ þis maner of wyse; "what is he þis at syttis att supper & I holde candeƚƚ vnto and duse sucℏ serves? what am̛ I þat I sulde seryff hym̛ þis?" and þan̛ þis holie man̛ sayd̛ vnto hym̛; "Bruther, Cros & mark þi harte! what is þat att þou spekis vnto þi selfe?" and he callid̛ one of his brethir & commanddid̛ hym̛ to take þe candiƚƚ fro hym̛ & halde it, & commawndid̛ hym̛ to go vnto hys chambre & take his reste. & þis yong man̛ was so asshamyd̛ þat he knew his thoght, þat neuer after he was prowde nor thoght disdeingne to done hym̛ serves. et c̛.
