[verse 17] Ryȝt [folio 59c] so feiþ, if it haue nouȝt deedis, it is dede in it-self. [verse 18] But some seiþ, Þou hast feiþ, & I haue dedis: schewe me þi feiþ wiþ-outen werkes, & I schal schewe þe my feiþ þorow my werkes. [verse 19] Þow trowest þat þer is o God, þou doost weel: & deueles trowe it & quaken. [verse 20] Þou veyne man, wilt þou wite, how þat feiþ wiþ-outen werkes is deed? [verse 21] Abraham oure fadur ne was he noȝt þorw his werkes maked ryȝtwyse, offerrynge Ysaac his sone on an auter? [verse 22] Lo, hou feiþ was wrouȝt þorow his deedis, & þorow werkes feiþ is endid; [verse 23] & þe scripture is fulfillid þat seiþ, Abraham trowed to God, & it is putt him to riȝtwisnesse; & he is clepid Godis freend. [verse 24] Now ȝe se how þat man is maked riȝtwyse þorow his werkes, & nouȝt only þorow feiþ. [verse 25] On þe same wyse also Raab þe hore ne is sche not maked riȝtwyse þorow here werkes [nota in margin.] , takynge messageres, & by oþer weye kastynge a-wey wickednesse? [verse 26] Soþly riȝt as þe body wiþ-outen þe soule is deed, so is feiþ wiþ-outen good werkes deed.
[verse 1] My deere breþeren, ne wyle ȝe not be maked many maystris, wytynge þat ȝee take þe more dome. [verse 2] We alle forsoþe haue offendid in many þingis. Who-so trespasiþ not in his word, he is here a parfyte man; he may al-so wiþ a brydul lede a- [folio 59d] boute al his body. [verse 3] Soþely if we putte brydulis in mowþes of horses to make hem to be at oure wille, we beren a-boute al þe body of hem. [verse 4] & thouȝ it so be þat scheppis be grete & wiþ grete wyndis þei been dreuen, soþly wiþ a lytul stere, wiþ hasty gouernynge of him þat ledeþ it, it is bore a-boute. [verse 5] Riȝt so þe tunge soþly a litul membre it is, & gret þinges it makeþ hyȝe. Loo, how litul fyre how grete a wode it brenneþ! [verse 6] And oure tunge is fyre, is alle manere of wickednes; þe tunge is ordeyned in oure membris, þe whuche defouliþ al þe body; & it brenneþ þe roote of oure birþe in flawme of helle fyre. [verse 7] Soþely alle þe kyndes of bestes, & of foulès, & of nedderis, & of alle oþere, beþ maked tame & beþ tamed of mankynde: [verse 8] soþely tunge no man may make tame, ful of vnpeisyble yuel & deedly venym. [verse 9] In it we blesse oure Fadur God, & in it we mysseye men, þat aftir þe ymage of God beþ maked: [verse 10] & of þat same mowþe goþ forþe blissynge & cursynge. My breþeren, it is not by|houeful þat þese þinges so be. [verse 11] Ne oute of þe hole of a welle ne goþ noȝt forþe bittir watir & swete to-gedur? [verse 12] My breþeren, þe fyge-tre ne may not brynge forþe grapes, or þe vyne-tre fyges: so no more may salt watur make swete watur. [verse 13] Who-so is wyse & wel tauȝt [folio 60] a-monges ȝow, schewe he of his goode lyuynge his werke in myldenesse of wysdome. [verse 14] Ȝif þat ȝee haue bittur loue & stryuynges in ȝoure hertis, ne make ȝee no ioye & be lyeres aȝens soþfastnes. [verse 15] Soþely þis wysdom is not comynge from a-boue, but erþely, bestlyche, deuellyche. [verse 16] Forsoþe wherso enuye is & strif, þer is vnstabulnes & eche schrewed deede. [verse 17] Soþely þat wytte þat is of a-bouen first forsoþe it is clene, & aftur þat peysyble, mylde to a-moneste, assentynge to þe goode, ful of mercy & of good fruyte, schew|ynge wiþoute fals colourynge. [verse 18] Soþely þe fruyte of riȝtwysnes is sowen in pees to hem þat dooþ pees.
