[verse 1] And [P folio 40] [S folio 35] þerfore þer ne is [e is on erasure, S.] no þing of dampnacyon to þese þat beþ in Iesu Crist, þat walkeþ noȝt after þe flesche. [verse 2] For þe

lawe of þe spiryt of lyf in Crist haþ delyfered me from þe lawe of sunne & of deþ. [verse 3] For þat þat was inpossyble to þe lawe, in þe whuche þing man was y-maad sek þoroȝ þe flesche, God sende his Sone in þe lykenesse of þe flesche of sunne, & [verse 4] of sunne he dampned sunne in flesch: þat þe iustifyenge of þe lawe were fulfulled in ous, þat walkeþ noȝt aftur þe flesch, bote aftur þe spiryt. [verse 5] For þilke þat beþ [an e in the margin, S.] aftur þe flesch safereþ þilke þinges þat beþ of þe flesch; but þilke þat beþ [verse 6] aftur þe spiryt feleþ þilke þinges þat beþ of þe spiryt. For þe wisdom of þe flesch is deþ; bote þe wysdom of þe spiryt is lyf [verse 7] & pes: for þe wysdom of þe flesch is enemye to God: for þe lawe of God heo ne is noȝt soget, ne may not ben soget: & þilke þat beþ in þe flesch ne mowe not plese God. [verse 8] , [verse 9] & ȝe ne beþ noȝt in þe flesch bote in þe spiryt, ȝif þat þe Spiryt of God dwelleþ in ȝow. & who þat haþ noȝt þe spiryt of Crist, he ne is noȝt of hym. [verse 10] & ȝif þat Crist is in ȝow, þanne is þe body deed for sunne; but þe spiryt lyueþ for iustificacyoun. [verse 11] And ȝif [P folio 40b] þe Spiryte of hym þat a-rered up Iesu Crist from deþ to lyfe dwelle in ȝow, he þat arered up Iesu Crist from deþ to lyfe schal quykene ȝoure dedlyche bodyes for his Spiryt þat dwelleþ in ȝow. [verse 12] & þerfore, breþeren, we beþ dettoures, noȝt to þe flesch, þat we lyfen aftur þe flesch. [verse 13] For ȝif ȝe lyfeþ aftur þe flesch ȝe schuleþ deyȝen; bote ȝef ȝe sleþ þe werkes of þe flesch þorowȝ þe spiryt, ȝe schuleþ lyfen. [verse 14] For who|euere beþ y-maad þorowȝ þe spiryt of God, þei beþ Godes chyldren. [verse 15] For ȝe ne hafeþ noȝt vnderfongen þe spiryt of [S folio 35b] þraldom eftsones in drede; bote ȝe haueþ vnderfongen þe spirit of þe bygetynge of children, in þe whuche spirit we crieþ to God oure Fadur. [verse 16] For þat Spirit ȝefeþ witnesse to [verse 17] oure spirit, þat we beþ Godes children: and ȝef we beþ children & eyres, we beþ eyres of God, & eyres wiþ Crist; ȝif it is so þat we suffreþ to-gedere, þat we ben y-gloryfyed to-gydere. [verse 18] & I trowe þat þe suffrynges of þis tyme ne beþ noȝt worþi to þe blisse þat schal be schewed in ous her-aftur. [verse 19] For þe abydynge of creature abydeþ þe schewenge of Goddis children. [verse 20] For eferich creature is soget to vanyte, noȝt wil|fullyche, bote for hym [P folio 41] þat haþ y-maad hure soget in hope:

[verse 21] For þat creature schal be delifered from þe þraldom of corrupcyoun in-to þe fredom of þe blisse of Godes chyldren. [verse 22] & we knoweþ þat eferech creature makeþ waymentacyoun ȝit nowþe. [verse 23] Noȝt onlyche heo, bote we also, þat habbeþ þe furste|fruytes of þe Spirit, we makeþ waymentacioun wiþ-ynne ous-self, abydynge þe bygetynge of Godes children, & þe for-buggynge of oure body. [verse 24] & þorow hope [þe hope P.] we beþ y-safed: For hope þat is y-seye ne is non hope: for þat þing þat a man seþ he ne hopeþ noȝt. [verse 25] & ȝif we hope þing þat we se noȝt, þoroȝ pacyence we abydeþ þat þyng. [verse 26] & þe Spirit also helpeþ oure infirmyte: for we ne koneþ noȝt preyen as it byhofeþ; but þe Spiryt preyeþ for ous þoroȝ sykynges þat [verse 27] mowe noȝt ben y-told; and he þat sercheþ hertes knoweþ what þe Spirit desyreþ, þat þoroȝ God preyeþ for seyntes. [verse 28] & we knoweþ þat to þilke þat lofeþ God alle þinges worcheþ to-gedere in-to good, to þese men þat beþ aftur hure purpos y-cleped holy men. [verse 29] For [S folio 36] þilke he knew by-fore & ordeyned byfore to ben y-confermed to þe ymage of his Sone, þat he be [verse 30] þe furste bygete sone in many breþeren: & þilke þat he ordeyned byfore, þilke he haþ y-cleped: & þilke þat he haþ y-cleped, þilke he haþ y-iustyfyed [y- om. S.] [P folio 41b] : & þilke þat he haþ y-iustifyed, þilke he haþ y-magnyfyed. [verse 31] What schulde we seye þanne [þanne seye P.] ? Ȝif God is wiþ ous, who is aȝeyns ous? [verse 32] & he ne spared [spareþ P.] noȝt his owne Sone, bote ȝef hym for alle ous, & how ne he [he ne P.] haþ noȝt y-ȝeuen ous alle þinges wiþ hym? [verse 33] & who schal accusen aȝeyn hem þat beþ y-chosen of God? God þat iustifyeþ [iustyfyed P.] ; who is he þat schal demen? [verse 34] Iesu Crist þat dyed, & ros al-so from deþ to lyfe, & is on þe riȝtsyde of God, & preyȝeþ also for ous. [verse 35] Who schal þanne departen ous from þe charite of Crist? tribulacyoun, oþer angwysch, oþer hunger, oþer persecucyoun, oþer nakedschep, oþer pereyle, oþer swerd? [verse 36] As it is wryten, For þe we beþ y-slawe al day; & me [men P.] weneþ þat we ben scheep of sleynge. [verse 37] But in alle þese þinges we ofercomeþ for hym þat lofed ous. [verse 38] & ich am certeyn, þat nowþer deþ, ne lyf, ne angeles, ne princypaltees, ne vertues, ne þinges þat beþ nowþe, ne þinges þat schulleþ ben her|aftur,

ne strengþe, ne hyȝenesse, ne depnesse [es on erasure, S.] , ne non oþer creature, may departen ous from þe charite of God, þat is in oure Lord Iesu Crist.
