                                  ¶ "Certes, sire," þis Maide seide : "þis wordes beoth alle for nauȝt:
                                
                                  Þov ne schalt me neuere bringue fram him : þat hath min heorte i-cauȝt.
                                
                                  Do þat þov wolt, and haue i-don : and bring þi wille to ende,

                                  For þou ne schalt neuere for no-þing : min herte fram Ihesu wende."
                                
                                  "Ȝware beo ȝe, mine quellares?" : þe Aumperur þo seide,
                                
                                  "Faste ȝe schulle þe wychche binde : and with-oute toune lede,
                                
                                  And smitez [r. smite]  of hire heued a-non : an don þe guode dede,

                                  Þat heo ne bringe us neuereft : In soruwe ne In drede."
                                
                                  Þo þis Maide was i-brouȝt : to slene with-oute þe toun,

                                  In ani neode oþur in ani anuy : of mine passione,
