[6-text p 659] .I. haue oft seide to ȝowe; & nowe .I. seye it wepeinge; þat þei bien ennemys of þe croyce of crist of whiche þende is deþe; & of whiche here wombes is hire god & hire glorie in confusione of hem þat so saueren erþely þinges; [821] ¶ He þat is vsant to þis sinne of glotonye he ne may no sinne wiþ-stande; He moste bue in seruage of al vices for it is þe deuels horde þere he hideþ him inne & resteþ; [822] ¶ This sinne haþ mony spyces; þe first is dronkennesse þat is þorrible sepulcre of mannes resoun; And þere|for whan þat a man is dronken he haþe lost his reson; & þis is dedely sinne [823] ¶ Bot certes whan a man is nouht wonte to straunge drinke; ne peraduenture ne knoweþ not þe strenkeþ of þe drinke; or haþe feblesse in his hede; or haþe trauailede þoruhe whiche he drinkeþ þe more Al be he so sodanly cauht wiþ drinke it is no dedely sinne bot veniale; [824] The secunde spice of glotonye is þat þe spirit of man waxeþ al trouble for dronkenesse bereueþ him discrecioun of his witte; [825] ¶ þe þred spice of glotony is; Whan a man devowreþ [folio 248a] his mete & haþe no rihtful manere of etynge; [826] ¶ þe ferþe is whan þorwh grete abund|aunce of his mete þe homours of his body biene dis|temperd [827] ¶ þe .ve. is forȝetelnesse be to mechel drynkynge for whiche sumtyme aman summe time a man for|ȝeteþ be þe morwe what he dide att eue or att þe nyhte be-fore;

[828] In oþere manere bien distinket of Spices of glotony after seint gregorye. ¶ þe first is for to ete to fortime ¶ þe. secunde is whan a man geteþ him to delicate mete [829] ¶ þe. threde; is. whan a man takeþ to muchel ouere mesure ¶ þe ferþe. is þe coriouste wiþ grete entent to maken & apparell his mete. þe fifte. is to ete to gredely; [830] þes bien þe .v. fyngres of þe deueles honde be whiche he draweþ folk to sinne
