[The Remedy against Envy.]

[515] ¶ Nowe wil .I. speke of þe remedye aȝeines þis foule sinne of Envie; ffirst is þe loue of god principal & loueinge of him selfe & of his neyhbour. ffor soþely þe tone maie not be withouten þe toþere. [516] And trusteþ wele þat in þe name of þi neyhboure þou schalt vnderstande þe name of þi broþere ffor certes al we haue o fader ffleschely & o moder; þat is to seye Adam & Eue; & eke o fader spirituele þat is to seie god of heuen; [517] þine neyhbour ert þou holden for to loue & wilne him al godenesse; And þerefor seiþe god loue þine neyhbour as þi self; þat is to saluacion boþ to lyue & to soule; [518] And more ouere þou schal loue him in worde & benygne ammonesscheynge; And chastiseinge; And comfort him in his anoyes; And praye for him wiþ al þine herte; [519] And in dede þou schalt loue him in suche wise þat þou schalte done to him in charite; As þou woldest were done to þine owen persone; [520] And þerfore þou schalte note done him no damage in wykked worde ne harme in his body ne in his catel ne in his soule be entiseinge of wykked ensample. [521] þou schalt nouht desire his wyf ne none of his þinges; vnderstande eke; þat in þe name of þi neyhbour is com|prehended his enmye [522] ¶ Certes a man schal loue his enemye for þe commandementz of god; And soþely þi frende schalt þou loue in god; [523] I. sei þin ennemye schalt þou loue for goddes saake by his commande|ment

[6-text p 631] ; ffor if it were reson. þat man scholde hate his ennemye; for soþ god wol not receyue vs to his loue þat bien his enemyes [524] aȝeines þre manere of of wronges; þat his Ennemy doþe to him; He schal do þre þinges; As þus; [525] Aȝeines hate & rankour of hert; He schal loue him in Herte aȝeine chideinge & wikkede wordes. he schal praie for his Ennemy. ¶ Aȝeines þe wikked dede of his ennemye he schal done him bounte; [526] ¶ For Crist seiþe; loueþ ȝoure enemys And preieþ for hem þat spekeþ ȝowe harme /./ And eke for hem þat ȝowe chasen; & pursewen; And doþe bounte to hem þat ȝowe haten; =Lo þus commandeþ vs oure lorde ihesu criste to do to oure enemyes; [527] For soþely nature driues vs to loue oure frendes. And parfey oure enemys haue more nede to loue þan oure frendes; And þei þat mor nede had; to hem schal men do goode|nesse [528] ¶ And certes in þilke dede haue þe remem|brance of þe loue of ihesu criste þat deyed for his ennemys; [529] ¶ And in almuche þat þilke loue is þe more to performe; So muche is more þe gre merit; And þerefore þe loueinge of oure Enmi; Haþ confounde þe venime of þe deuyll; [530] ffor rih as þe deuel is dis [folio 240b] comfite be humilite Riht so is he woundede to to þe deþe be þe loue of oure Enmye; [531] Certes þan is loue þe medecyne þat cacheþ oute þe venym of Envye Fro mannes herte [532] ¶ þe spices of þis pas scholne bue more largely in here chapetles folowynge;
