CAP. XXII.

[verse 1] Thou schalt not se `thi brotheris oxe [the oxe of thi brothir I. thi brother oxe S.] , ethir scheep, errynge, and schalt passe [passe therbi S.] , but thou schalt brynge aȝen [it aȝen IS.] to thi bro|ther [brother his beest S.] . [verse 2] And if thi brother [neiȝbore S.] is not nyȝ [dwellinge there S marg.] , nether thou knowist hym, thou schalt lede tho beestis in to thin hows, and tho schulen be at [anentis IS.] thee, as long as thi brother sekith tho [hem IS.] , and til he resseyue hem [Om. plures.] . [verse 3] In lijk maner thou schalt do of `the asse [the asse of thi brother I. thi brother asse S.] , and clooth [of clooth I. of his clooth S.] , and of ech thing of thi bro|ther, that was lost; if thou fyndist it, be thou not necgligent as of [Om. S.] an alien thing [Om. X. but kepe it feithfulli and ȝelde it aȝen trewly S marg.] . [verse 4] If thou seest that [Om. M.] the asse, ethir oxe [the oxe A pr. m. an oxe IS.] of thi brothir felde [hath falle IS.] in the weye, thou schalt not dispise, but thou schalt `reise with hym [helpe to reise it [the beest S] vp with thi brothir IS.] . [verse 5] A womman schal not be clothid in a mannys clooth [clothing I.] [in a mannes clooth: In Ebreu it is thus, the vessel, that is, armer of a man schal not be on a womman. G.] , nether a man schal vse a wommannys cloth [clothing I. Om. S.] ; for he that doith [vsith I.] thes thingis is abhomynable bifor God.

[verse 6] If thou goist in [by BCDFGIKLMNOS.] the weie, and fyndist a `nest of a brid [briddus nest I. brid nest S.] in a tree, ethir in the [Om. plures.] erthe, and fyndist [Om. I. thou fyndist S.] the modir [dammes IS.] sittynge on [vpon IS.] the [here I. hir S.] briddis ethir [or vpon IS.] eyrun, thou schalt not holde the modir [damme IS.] with `the children [hir briddus IS.] , [verse 7] but thou schalt suffre `the modir [hir to I. the daam S.] go, and schalt [thou schalt IS.] holde the sones [briddus IS.] takun, that it be wel to thee, and thou [that thow IS.] lyue in long tyme. [verse 8] Whanne thou bildist a newe hows, thou schalt make a wal of the roof bi cumpas, lest blood be sched out in thin hows, and thou be gilti [gilti ther off IS. for thin vnsuf|ficient bilding IS marg.] , if another man slidith, and falle [fallith BIS.] in to a dich. [verse 9] Thou schalt not sowe thi vyner [thou schalt not sowe thi vyner: In E|breu it is thus, thou schalt not sowe meddlid thing, lest the fulnesse of the seed, which thou hast sowe, be defoulid, and the fruyt of the vyner; the cause of sich dyuersite is this, for the Ebreu word here signefieth bothe halewing, and defouling; fruyt of the vyner, plauntid of the newe, is vncleene bi iij. ȝeer, and the corn touchinge the fruyt vn|cleene schulde also be vnclene, and so offringis, as the firste fruytis and tithis, myȝten not be maad therof to the Lord. [verse 11] Thou schalt not be clothid in a cloth, which [that S.] is wouun togidir of wolle and `of flex [flexen S.] . [verse 12] Thou schalt make litle cordis bi foure corneris in the hemmys of thi mentil, `with which [that I.] thou art hilid [hilid with I.] . [verse 13] If a man weddith a wijf, [verse 14] and aftirward hatith hir, and sekith occa|siouns bi which he `schal forsake [mai leue I.] hir, and puttith [he puttith IS.] aȝens hir `the werste [a ful wickid I.] name, and seith, Y haue take this wijf, and Y en|tride [haue entride IS.] to hir, and Y foond not hir virgyn [a virgyn IS.] ; [verse 15] the fadir and modir of hir schulen take hir, and thei schulen bere with hem the signes [tokens IS.] of her virgynyte to the eldre men [verse 16] of the citee, that ben in [iugis sittinge in S.] the ȝate; and the [hir S.] fadir schal seie, Y ȝaf my douȝtir wijf to this man, and for he hatith hir, [verse 17] he puttith to hir `the werste [a ful yuel I.] name, that he seye [seith IS.] , Y foond not thi douȝtir virgyn [a virgyn IS.] ; and lo! these ben the signes [tokens IS.] of virgynyte [the virgynyte S.] of my douȝtir; thei schulen sprede forth a cloth [sprede forth clooth; that is, as Ebrews seyen, thei schulen declare the virgynete of her douȝter bi the wordis of witnessis. [verse 19] take the man [that hadde weddid hir S marg.] , and schulen [thei schulen IS.] bete hym, and ferthermore thei schulen condempne hym in an hundrid siclis of siluer, whiche he schal ȝyue to the `fadir of the damysel [damesels fadir I. damesel fadir S.] , for he diffamide [diffamide hir bi the IS.] the werste name [that mai be S marg.] on [vpon IS.] a virgyn of Israel; and he schal haue hir wijf [to wijf C sec. m. IS.] , and he schal not mowe forsake hir, in al `the tyme of his lijf [his lijf tyme IS.] . [verse 20] That if it is [is founden S.] soth, that he puttith aȝens hir, and vir|gynyte is not foundun in the damysel [womman IS.] , [verse 21] thei schulen caste hir `out of [at Q.] `the ȝatis of the hous of hir fadir [the ȝatis of hir fadir BCFGLMNPQT pr. m. hir fadir ȝatis IS.] ; and men of that citee schulen oppresse hir with stoonys, and sche schal die, for sche dide vnleue|ful thing in Israel, that sche dide forny|cacioun [leccherie IS.] [that sche dide fornycacioun, aftir feith ȝouun to the hose|bonde, ellis sche schulde not die for sich synne, as it is had in the ende of this c^o. and in xxij. c^o. of Exodi. [verse 22] If a man slepith with `the wijf of another man [an other mannus wijf IS.] , euer eithir schal die, that is, auowter [the auowter IS.] and auowtresse [the auowtresse IS.] ; and thou [thus thou IS.] schalt do awey yuel fro Israel. [verse 23] If a man spousith a damysel virgyn, and a [an oother IS.] man fyndith hir [hir or takith S.] in the citee, and doith letcherie [verse 24] with hir, thou schalt lede euer eithir to the ȝate of that citee, and thei schulen be [bothe be S.] oppressid [killid I.] with stoonus; the damy|sel [womman IS.] schal [Om. S.] be stonyd, for sche criede not, whanne sche was in the citee [and miȝte haue hade help S marg.] ; the [and the S.] man schal `be stonyd [dye IS.] , for he `made low the wijf of his neiȝbore [de|foulide his neiȝboris wijf IS.] ; and [and thus IS.] thou schalt do awei yuel fro the myddis of thee. delyuer hir. [verse 28] If a man fyndith [fynde IS.] a damysel virgyn that hath no spowse, and takith [he takith IS.] , and doith letcherie with hir, and the [this IS.] thing [verse 29] cometh to the doom, he that slepte with hir [that damesel IS.] schal ȝyue to `the fadir of the damy|sel [hir fadir IS.] fifti siclis of siluer, and he schal haue hir wijf [to wijf C sec. m.] , for he `made hir low [mekide hir IS.] ; he schal not mow forsake hir, in alle the daies of his lijf. [verse 30] A man schal not take `the wijf of his fadir [his fadris wijf I. his fadir wijf S.] , nethir he schal schewe `the hilyng of hir [hir priuetee IS.] .
