[verse 1] And the Lord spak to Moyses, and [verse 2] seide, Venge thou firste the sones of Israel of Madianytis [the men of Madian IS.] , and so thou schalt be ga|derid to thi puple. [verse 3] And anoon Moises seide, Arme ȝe men of ȝou to batel, that moun take of Madianytis [the Madianytis IS.] the veniaunce of the Lord. [verse 4] Of [and of IS.] ech lynage be chosun [ther chosun I.] a thousynde men of Israel, that schulen be sent to batel. [verse 5] And of ech lynage thei ȝauen a thousynde, that is twelue thou|synde [verse 6] of men [Om. IS.] , redi to batel; whiche Moises sente [sente forth IS.] with Fynees, the sone of Eleazar, preest [the preest I.] . And he [Moises IS.] bitook to hem hooli vesselis, and trumpis to make sown. [verse 7] And whanne thei hadden fouȝt aȝens Madian|ytis, and hadden ouercome [ouercomen hem S.] , thei [Israel IS.] killiden [thei killiden, etc. In Ebreu it is, and thei killiden the kyngis of hem on slayn men, that is, on men cast doun bi Goddis vertu, as Ebrews ex|pownen. Also thei [Israel IS.] killiden bi [with I.] swerd Balaam, the sone of Beor. [verse 9] And thei [Israel IS.] token the [Om. C.] wym|men of hem, and the [her IS.] litle children, and alle beestis [her beestis IS.] , and al purtenaunce [the pur|tenaunce IS.] of hows|hold [her howshold IS.] ; what euer thei myȝten haue, thei [verse 10] spuyleden [destrieden IS.] ; flawme [the flawme IS.] brente as wel citees [the citees B.] , as litle townes and castels. [verse 11] And they token pray, and alle thingis whiche thei hadden take, as wel of men as of beestis, [verse 12] and thei brouȝten to [tho to IS.] Moyses, and to Ele|azar, preest [the preest IS.] , and to al the multitude of the sones of Israel. [verse 15] and he seide [seide to hem I.] , Whi reserueden [kepte IS.] ȝe wym|men? [verse 16] whether it be not these [these wymmen S.] that [whiche S.] dis|seyueden the sones of Israel, at the sug|gestioun of Balaam, and maden ȝou to do trespas aȝens the Lord, on [vpon IS.] the synne of Phegor, wherfor also the puple was slayn? [verse 17] And therfor sle ȝe alle men [the men IS.] , what euer thing [Om. I.] is of male kynde, and litle [the litle IS.] chil|dren; and strangle ȝe the wymmen that [verse 18] knew [han knowe IS.] men fleischli; forsothe [sotheli IS.] reserue [kepe IS.] ȝe to ȝou damesels [the ȝounge damesels IS.] , and alle wymmen vir|gyns, [verse 19] and dwelle ȝe with out the castels [tentis IS.] in [Om. IS.] seuene daies. He that sleeth a man, ether [or ELP passim.] touchith a slayn man, schal be clensid in the thridde and the [Om. plures.] seuenthe [verse 20] dai [Om. N.] ; and of [the thing of I. Om. S.] al [al thing S.] the pray, whether it is clooth, ether [or EILPS.] vessel, and ony thing maad redi in [Om. IORSTW.] to thingis perteynynge to vss, of the skynnys and heeris of geet, and `of tre [wode IS.] , it schal be clensid. [verse 21] And Eleazar, preest [the preest IS.] , spak thus to the [Om. IOS.] men of the oost that fouȝten, This is the comaundement [heest IS.] of the lawe, which [that IS.] the Lord comaundide [verse 22] to Moises, The gold, and siluer, and bras, and yrun, and tiyn, and leed, and al thing that may passe [passe vn|waastid S marg.] by flawme, schal be purgid [verse 23] bi fier; sotheli what euer thing may not suffre fier, schal be halewid [halewid or purgid S.] bi [with I.] the watir of clensyng. [verse 24] And ȝe schulen waische ȝoure clothis in the seuenthe dai, and ȝe schulen be clensid; and aftirward ȝe schulen entre in to the [Om. plures.] castels [tentis IS.] `of the tabernacle [Om. I.] . [verse 25] And the Lord seide to Moises, [verse 26] Take ȝe the summe [noumbre IS.] of tho thingis that ben takun, fro man `til to [vnto IS. to O sup. ras.] beeste, thou, and Eleazar, preest [the preest IS.] , and alle the princes of the comyn puple. [verse 27] And thou schalt departe euenli the prey bytwixe hem that fouȝten and ȝeden out to batel, and bitwixe al the multitude [other multitude IS.] . [verse 28] And thou schalt departe a [o I.] part to the Lord, of hem that fouȝten [han fouȝten IS.] , and weren in batel [batel take thou S.] , `o soule [OO lijf I.] of fiue hundrid,

as wel of men, as of oxun, and of assis, and of scheep. [verse 29] And thou [that that thou I.] schalt ȝyue `that part [Om. I.] to Eleazar, preest [the preest IS.] , for tho ben the firste fruytis of the Lord. [verse 30] Also of the myddil part of the sones of Israel, thou schalt take the fiftithe heed [heed or moost cheef S marg.] of men, and of oxun, and of [Om. IS.] assis, and of [Om. IS.] scheep, and of alle lyuynge beestis; and thou schalt ȝyue tho to the dekenes, that waken in the kepyngis of the tabernacle of the Lord. [verse 31] And Moyses and Eleazar diden, as the Lord comaundide. [verse 32] Forsothe [Sothely IS.] the prey which [that IS.] the oost hadde take, was sixe hundrid fyue [and fyue A pr. m.] and seuenti thousynde of [verse 33] scheep, of oxun two and seuenti thou|synde, [verse 34] of assis sixti thousynde and a thou|synde; [verse 35] the soules of persones [the persones S.] of femal [wymmen IS.] kynde, that knewen not fleischli [Om. S.] men, two [weren two IS.] and thretti thousynde. [verse 36] And the myd|dil part was ȝouun to hem that weren in the [Om. plures.] batel, of scheep thre [her part was thre S.] hundrid seuene and thretti thousynde and fyue hundrid; [verse 37] of whiche sixe hundrid fyue and seuenti scheep weren noumbrid in to the part of [verse 38] the Lord; and of sixe and thretti thou|synde [verse 39] oxun, two and seuenti oxun [oxun fellen to her part S.] , and [Om. A sec. m.] of thretti thousynde assis and fyue hun|dryd, [verse 40] oon and sixti assis; of [fellen to the Lord as part of I. fellen to his part of S.] sixtene thousynde persoones [of persones S.] of men, twei and thretti persoones bifelden in [Om. IS.] to the `part of the Lord [Lordus part IS.] . [verse 41] And Moises bitook the noumbre of the firste fruytis of the Lord to Eleazar [Elezar A.] , preest [the preest IS.] , as it was comaundid [verse 42] to hym, of the myddil part of the sones of Israel, which [the which I.] he departide to hem that weren in batel. [verse 43] And of the myddil part that bifelde to the tother multitude, that is, of thre hundrid seuene and thretti thousynde scheep and fyue hundrid, and [verse 44] [verse 45] of [Om. S.] sixe and thretti thousynde oxun, and of thretti thousynde assis and fyue hun|drid, [verse 46] and of sixtene thousynde wymmen, [verse 47] Moyses took the fyftithe [first L.] heed [heed or pool I. heed or polle S.] , and ȝaf [he ȝaf hem IS.]

to the dekenes, that wakiden [waken X.] in the taber|nacle of the Lord, as the Lord comaundide. [verse 48] And whanne the princes of the oost, and the tribunes and centuriouns [the centuriouns IS.] hadden [verse 49] neiȝed to Moises, thei seiden, We thi ser|uauntis han teld the noumbre of fiȝters, whiche we hadden vndur oure hoond [hoond or power S.] , and [verse 50] sotheli not oon failide; for which [the which I.] cause we offren [offren or brengen to thee S.] `in the [Om. S.] fre ȝiftis of the Lord, alle bi vs [oure EILPS.] silf, that that we myȝten fynde of gold in the pray, girdelis for `the myd|dil of wymmen [wymmens myddlis I. wymmen myddlis S.] , and bies of the armes, and ryngis, and ournementis of the arm nyȝ the hond, and bies of the neckis of wymmen, that thou preye the Lord for vs. [verse 51] And Moises and Eleazar, preest [the preest IS.] , token al [verse 52] the gold in dyuerse spices [kyndis IS.] , `ether kyndis [Om. IS.] , bi the weiȝte of the seyntuarye, sixtene [and sixtene I.] thousynde seuene hundrid and fifti siclis, of the tribunes, and centuriouns [the centuriouns IS.] . [verse 53] For that that ech man rauyschide in the prey, [verse 54] was his owne; and thei baren the gold taken in to the tabernacle of witnessyng, in to the [Om. IS.] mynde of the sones of Israel, bifor the Lord.
