CAP. XXIII.

[verse 1] Thou schalt not resseyue a [the IS.] vois of leesyng, nether [ne IS.] thou schalt ioyne [ioyne, in E|breu it is, thou schalt not reise thyn hond. [verse 2] Thou schalt not sue the [a IS.] cumpanye to do yuel, nether thou schalt [schalt not G.] ascente to the sentence of ful many men in doom, that thou go awey fro treuthe. [verse 3] Also thou schalt not [Om. G.] haue mercy of a pore man in a [Om. A pr. m. et plures.] `cause, ethir doom [cause or doom ELP. doom IS.] [for iust doom accepteth no person. IS.] . [verse 4] If thou meetist `the oxe of thin enemye [thin enemyes oxe IS.] , ethir [or ELP.] the [Om. BSX. his I.] asse errynge [straiynge I.] , lede thou [it IS.] aȝen to hym. [verse 5] If thou seest that the asse of hym that hatith thee liggyth [lijth IX.] vndir a burthun, thou schalt not passe [passe awey S.] , but thou schalt reise [reise vp it I. reise vp S.] with hym [hym the beest S.] . [verse 6] Thou schalt not bowe [bowe fro treuth S.] in the doom of a pore man. [verse 7] Thou schalt fle a [Om. IS.] lesyng. Thou schalt not sle an in|nocent man, and iust [a iust IS.] ; for Y am aduer|sarie to a wickid man. [verse 8] Take thou not ȝiftis, that blynden also [ȝhe I.] prudent men, and destryen the wordys of iust men. [verse 9] Thou schalt not be diseseful [disesy IS.] to a pilgrym, for ȝe knowen the soulis [lyues IS.] of comelyngis, for also ȝe weren pilgryms in the lond of Egipt. [verse 10] Sixe ȝeer thou schalt sowe thi lond, and thou schalt gadre fruytis therof; [verse 11] forsothe in the seuenthe ȝeer thou schalt

leeue it, and schalt [Om. DIMOQRST sec. m. W. thou schalt K.] make [make it KS.] to reste, that the pore men of thi puple ete, and what euer is residue [left vngederid I. left L. residue, either left vngedrid S.] , the beestis of the feeld ete [ete it IS.] ; so thou schalt do in thi vyner, and in place [the place ILS.] of olyue [thin olyue B.] trees. [verse 12] Sixe dayes thou schalt worche, in [and in BIKS.] the seuenthe dai thou schalt ceesse, that thin oxe and asse [thin asse DGIQRST.] reste, and the sone of thin handmaide, and the comelyng be refreischid. [verse 13] Kepe ȝe alle thingis, whiche Y seide [say IS.] to ȝou; and ȝe schulen not swere bi the name of alien goddis, nether it schal be herd of ȝoure mouth. [verse 14] In thre tymes bi alle ȝeeris ȝe schulen halewe feestis to me. [verse 15] Thou schalt kepe the [Om. L.] solempnyte of therf looues; se|uene [in seuene KO pr. m.] daies thou schalt ete therf breed, as Y comaundide [haue comaundid I.] to thee, in the [Om. IS.] tyme of monethe [the monethe IS.] of newe thingis, whanne thou ȝedist out of Egipt; thou schalt not ap|pere voide in my siȝt. [verse 16] And thou schalt kepe the solempnete of the monethe of the firste thingis of thi werk [werkis S.] , what euer thingis thou hast sowe in the [thi DGQRT.] feeld. Also thou schalt kepe the solempnyte in the [Om. C.] goyng out of the ȝeer, whanne thou hast gaderid all thi fruytis of the [thi S.] feeld. [verse 17] Thries in the ȝeer al thi [the plures.] male kynde schal ap|pere bifore thi Lord God. [verse 18] Thou schalt not offre the blood of thi slayn [brent W.] sacrifice on sour douȝ [sour douȝ, that is, while sour dowe is in thin hous BCGQSX.] ; nether the fatnesse [fatnesse, or plentee S.] of my solempnete schal dwelle til to the morew|tid. [verse 19] Thou schalt bere the firste thingis of the fruytis of thi lond in to the hows of thi Lord God. Thou schalt not sethe a kide in the mylke of his modir. [verse 20] Lo! Y schal [Om. G.] sende myn aungel, that schal go bifore thee, and schal [he schal IS.] kepe [kepe thee FIKS.] in the weie, and schal [he schal IS.] lede [lede thee IKS.] to the place which [that I.] Y haue maad redi to thee. [verse 21] Take thou hede to hym [take thou heede to him, that is, per|seyue thou bisily, that thou obeie to him. BC.] , and here thou his vois, nether gesse thou hym to be dispisid [that I.] ; for he schal not forȝyue, whanne thou synnest [synnest, til thou forthinke thy synne S.] , and my name is in him. [verse 22] For if thou herest [dispisid, or dispisable S.]

his vois, and doist alle thingis whiche Y speke, Y schal be enemy to thin enemyes, and Y schal turment hem, that turmenten [verse 23] thee; and myn aungel schal go bifore thee, and he schal lede yn thee to Amorrei, and Ethei, and Ferezei, and Cananey, and E|uey, and Jebusei, whiche Y schal breke [breke, or destrie IS.] . [verse 24] Thou schalt not onoure [onoure as to outward reuerence BCGQX.] `the goddis of hem [here goddes with outward reue|rence IS.] , nether thou schalt worschipe hem [hem as to innere reuerence BCGQ. hem as with innere reuerence X. hem with ynward affec|cioun IS.] ; thou schalt not do the werkis of hem, but thou schalt destrie the [tho BC. her IS.] goddis [goddis of hem K.] , and thou schalt breke the ymagis of hem. [verse 25] And ȝe schulen serue to ȝoure Lord God, that Y blesse thi looues, and watris [thi watris IS.] , and do awei [verse 26] sikenesse [siknessis G.] fro the myddis of thee; neithir a womman vnfruytful, neither bareyn [a bareyn IS.] , schal be in thi lond; Y schal fille [ful|fille IS.] the noumbre of thi daies. [verse 27] Y schal sende my drede in to thi biforgoyng, and Y schal sle al the puple, to which [the which I.] thou schalt entre, and Y schal turne the backis of alle [verse 28] thin enemyes bifore thee; and Y schal sende out bifore [bifore thee ISW.] scrabrouns [scrabrouns, a kynde of flies I. scrabrouns, or stinginge flies LP.] [scrabrouns, that is, flies with venemouse prickis, that ben bred of deed careyns. ABCGKNOQSX.] , that schulen dryue awei Euey, and Cananey, and Ethei, bifore that thou entre. [verse 29] Y schal not caste hem out fro thi face in o ȝeer, lest the lond be turned in to wildirnesse, and beestis en|creesse [verse 30] aȝens thee; litil and litil I schal caste hem out fro thi siȝt, til thou be en|creessid, and welde the loond. [verse 31] Forsothe Y [and Y K.] schal sette thi termys fro the reed see til to the see of Palestyns, and fro desert [the desert GIS.] til to the flood. Y schal ȝyue to ȝoure hondis the dwelleris of the lond, and Y [verse 32] schal caste hem out fro ȝoure siȝt; thou schalt not make boond of pees with hem, nethir with `the goddis of hem [her goddes IS.] . [verse 33] Dwelle thei not in thi lond, lest perauenture thei make thee to do synne aȝens me, yf thou seruest her goddis, which [the which I.] thing [thinges IS.] certis schal [shullen IS.] be to thee in to sclaundir.
