CAP. XXXIX.

[verse 1] Therfor Joseph was led in to Egipt, and Putifar, `chast and onest seruaunt [a geldyng I. a geldinge, the chaast honest seruaunt S.] of Farao, prince of the oost, a man of Egipt, bouȝte hym of the hondis [hond IS.] of Ismaelitis, of which he was brouȝt [brouȝt thidir IS.] . [verse 2] And the Lord was with hym, and he was a man doynge with prosperite in alle thingis. And Jo|seph dwellide in `the hows of his lord [his lordis hous IS.] , [verse 3] which knew best [ful wel I.] that the Lord was with Joseph, and that alle thingis whiche he dide, weren dressid of the Lord in `the hond of hym [his hond IS.] . [verse 4] And Joseph foond grace bifor his lord, and `mynystride to [he seruyde IS.] hym, of whom Joseph was maad souereyn of alle thingis, and gouernede [he gouernyde IS.] the hows bi|taken to hym, and alle thingis [othere thingis I.] that weren bitakun to hym. [verse 5] And the Lord blesside the `hows of Egipcian [the hows of the Egipcian M. Egipcianis hous I. Egipcian hous S.] for Joseph, and multipliede al his catel, as wel in howsis [verse 6] as in feeldis; nether he [his lord IS.] knew ony other thing no [Om. GQ.] but `breed [Bi breed in holi scripture is vndirstonden al manere of mete, and bi watir al manere of drynk. GQ.] which [the breed that IS.] he eet. For|sothe Joseph was fair [ful fair D.] in face, and schapli in siȝt. [verse 7] And so aftir many daies the ladi castide [keste IS.] hir iȝen in to Joseph, and seide, [verse 8] Slepe thou with me; which assentide not to the vnleueful werk, and seide to hir, Lo! while alle thingis ben bitakun to me, my lord woot not what he hath in his [verse 9] hows, nether ony thing is, which is not in my power, ether which `he hath [is E.] not bitake to me, outakun thee, which art his wijf; how therfor [Om. E.] may Y do this yuel, and do synne aȝens my lord? [verse 10] Thei spaken siche wordis `bi alle daies [longe tyme IS.] , and the womman was diseseful to the ȝong waxynge [Om. IS.] man, and he forsook auoutrie [the auoutrie IKS.] . [verse 11] Forsothe it bi|felde in a dai, that Joseph entride in to the hows, and dide sum werk [preuei werk fallinge to his office IS.] with out

witnessis [witnesse S.] . [verse 12] And sche [the ladi IS.] took `the hem of his clooth [him bi the cloth IS.] , and sche [Om. IS.] seide, Slepe thou with me; and he lefte the mentil in hir hoond, and he fledde, and ȝede out [out fro hir S.] . [verse 13] And whanne the womman hadde seyn [sawe IS.] the clooth in [left in IS.] hir hondis, and that sche was [verse 14] dispisid [dispisid of Joseph IS.] , sche clepide to hir the men of hir hows, and seide to hem, Lo! my lord hath brouȝt in an Ebrew man, that he schulde scorn vs; he entride to me to [that he schuld C. pr. m.] do leccherie with me, and whanne Y criede, [verse 15] and he herde my vois, he lefte the mentil which [that IS.] Y helde, and he fledde out. [verse 16] Ther|for in to the [Om. FGIKSW.] preuyng of trouthe [the treuthe IS. trouȝe E.] , sche schewide the mantil, holdun [that sche heelde I.] to the [hir S.] hose|bonde turnynge aȝen hoom. [verse 17] And she seide, The Ebrew seruaunt, whom thou brouȝtist [brouȝtist in S.] , entride to me to [that he schuld C pr. m.] scorne me; [verse 18] and whanne he siȝ me crye, he lefte the mentil which [that IS.] Y helde, and he fledde out. [verse 19] And whanne these thingis weren herd, the lord bileuyde ouer myche to the wordis [verse 20] of the wijf, and was [he was IS.] ful wrooth; and he bitook Joseph in to prisoun, where the [Om. IS.] bounden men [Om. plures.] of the kyng weren kept, and he was closid there. [verse 21] Forsothe the Lord was with Joseph, and hadde mercy on hym, and ȝaf [he ȝaf IS.] grace to hym in the siȝt [verse 22] of the prince of the prisoun, which bitook in the hond of Joseph alle prisoneris [the prisoneris IS.] that weren holdun in kepyng, and what euer thing was doon, it was [was don IS.] vndur Joseph, [verse 23] nethir the prince knewe ony thing, for alle thingis weren bitakun to Joseph; for the Lord was with hym, and dresside alle his werkis.
