[verse 1] Aftir that Jacob herde the wordis of the sones of Laban, that seiden, Jacob hath take awei alle thingis that weren oure fadris, and of his catel Jacob is maad riche, and noble. [verse 2] Also Jacob perseyuede the face of Laban, that it was not aȝens hym as ȝistirdai, and the thridde dai [verse 3] agoon, moost for the Lord seide to hym [Jacob S.] , Turne aȝen into the lond of thi fadris, and to thi generacioun, and Y shal be with
thee. [verse 4] He [Jacob S.] sente, and clepide Rachel, and Lya, in to the feeld, where he kepte flockis, [verse 5] and he seide to hem, Y se the face [cheer S.] of ȝoure fadir, that it [he A.] is not aȝens me as `ȝisterdai and the thridde dai agoon [it was wonte S.] ; but God of my fadir was with me. [verse 6] And ȝe witen that with alle my strengthis Y ser|uede [haue seruede S.] [verse 7] ȝoure fadir; but and ȝoure fadir dis|seyuyde [hath disceyued S.] me, and chaungide my meede ten sithis; and netheles God suffride [suf|frith DGNQRT.] not hym to anoye me. [verse 8] If he seide ony tyme, Dy|uerse colourid sheep schulen be thi medis [meed S.] , alle sheep [the sheep IS.] brouȝten forth dyuerse co|lourid [Om. BC pr. m.] lambren; forsothe whanne he [that he S.] seide aȝenward, Thou shalte take alle white [the white IS.] for mede [thi mede GIS.] , alle the [Om. EL.] flockis brouȝten forth white [verse 9] beestis; and God took a wey the substaunce of ȝoure fadir, and ȝaf [ȝaf it S.] to me. [verse 10] For aftir that the tyme of conseyuyng of sheep cam, Y reiside myn iȝen, and seiȝ [I siȝ S.] in sleep malis dyuerse, and spotti, and of dyuerse co|louris, stiynge on [vp on S.] femalis. [verse 11] And the aun|gel of the Lord seide to me in sleep, Jacob! and Y answeride, Y am redy [redy to heere S.] . [verse 12] Which [The which I.] seide, Reise thin iȝen, and se alle malis dyuerse, byspreynt, and [or S.] spotti, stiynge on [vp on S.] femalis; for Y seiȝ [haue sien S.] alle thingis whiche [verse 13] Laban dide [hath do S.] to thee; Y am God of Bethel, where thou anoyntidist a stoon, and madist auow to me. Now therefor rise thou, and go out of this lond, and turne aȝen in to the lond of thi birthe. [verse 14] And Rachel and Lya answeriden, Wher we han ony thing residue [residue or left IS.] in the catels, and eritage of oure fadir? [verse 15] Wher he `arettide not [arettide not or helde S.] vs as [Om. S.] aliens, and selde, and eet oure prijs? [verse 16] But God took awei the richessis of oure fadir, and ȝaf tho [Om. ELP.] to vs, and to oure sones; wherfor do thou alle thingis whiche God hath co|maundide to thee. [verse 17] Forsothe Jacob roos, and puttide [putte S.] hise fre children and wyues [verse 18] on camels, and ȝede forth; and he took al his catel, flockis, and what euer thing he hadde gete in Mesopotanye, and ȝede to Isaac, his fadir, into the lond of Canaan.
[verse 19] In that tyme Laban ȝede [wente S.] to schere [clippe C.] scheep, and Rachel stal the idols of hir fadir. [verse 20] And Jacob nolde [wolde not I.] knouleche to the fadir of his [verse 21] wijf [wyues S.] , that he wolde fle [go thennes S.] ; and whanne he [Jacob S.] hadde go [go forth S.] , as wel he as alle thingis that weren of his riȝt, and whanne he hadde passid the water, and he ȝede aȝens the [verse 22] hil of Galaad, it was teld to Laban, in the thridde dai, that Jacob fledde [ȝede thennes S.] . [verse 23] And La|ban took his britheren, and pursuede hym [Jacob S.] seuene daies, and took [ouertoke S.] hym in the hil of Galaad. [verse 24] And Laban seiȝ in sleep [the sleep G.] the Lord seiynge to him, Be war that thou speke not ony thing sharpli aȝens Jacob. [verse 25] And thanne Jacob hadde stretchid [strauȝt S.] forth the [a S.] tabernacle in the hil; and whanne he [Laban S.] hadde sued Jacob with his britheren, `he settide [Laban sette a S.] tente in the same hil of Ga|laad; [verse 26] and he seide to Jacob, Whi hast thou do so, that the while I wiste not thou woldist [woldist not L.] dryue awey my douȝtris as caitifs [caitifs ether takun prisoneris BCGIQX.] by swerd? [verse 27] Whi woldist thou fle the while Y wiste not, nether woldist shewe to me, that Y shulde sue thee with ioie, and songis, and tympans, and harpis? [verse 28] Thou suffridist not that Y schulde kisse my sones and douȝtris; thou hast wrouȝt folili. [verse 29] And now sotheli myn hond mai ȝelde yuel to thee, but the God of thi fadir seide to me ȝisterdai, Be war that thou speke not ony harder [hard KMS.] thing with Jacob. [verse 30] Suppose, if thou coueitedist to go to thi kynesmen, and the hows of thi fadir was in desir to thee, whi hast thou stole my goddis? [verse 31] Jacob answeride, That Y ȝede forth while thou wistist not, Y dredde lest thou woldist take awey thi douȝtris [douȝtris fro me S.] vio|lentli; [verse 32] sotheli that thou repreuest [repreued|ist I.] me of thefte, at whom euer thou fyndist thi goddis, be he slayn bifor oure britheren; seke thou, what euer thing of thine thou fyndist at me, and take [take it S.] awei. Jacob seide these thingis, and wiste not that Rachel stal [hade stolne S.] the idols. [verse 33] And so Laban entride into the tabernacle of Jacob, and of Lya,
and of euer eithir meyne, and foond [he foond DGS.] not; and whanne Laban hadde entrid in to the [verse 34] tente of Rachel, sche hastide, and hidde the idols vndur the strewyngis of the [a S.] camel [camelis K.] , and sat [she sat S.] aboue. And sche seide to Laban, sekynge al the tente and fynd|ynge [verse 35] no thing, My lord, be not wrooth that Y may not rise bifore thee, for it bifelde now to me bi the custom of wym|men; so [lo DGKMNQRTX.] the bisynesse of the sekere was scorned. [verse 36] And Jacob bolnyde, and seide with strijf, For what cause of me, and [or S.] for what synne of me, hast thou come so [verse 37] fersly aftir me, and hast souȝt al `the por|tenaunce of [thing that longith to S.] myn hous? What `hast thou [hastow F.] founde [founden here S.] of al the catel of thin hows? Putte [shewe S.] thou here bifore my britheren and thi britheren, and deme thei betwixe me and thee. [verse 38] Was I with thee herfore twenti ȝeer? Thi sheep and geet weren not ba|reyn, Y eet not the rammes of thi flok, [verse 39] nether Y schewide to thee ony thing takun of a beeste; Y ȝeldide al harm; what euer thing perischide bi [bifore G.] thefte, thou axidist of [verse 40] me; Y was angwischid [aguishid S.] in dai and nyȝt with heete and frost, and sleep fledde fro [verse 41] myn iȝen; so [lo EFKLMPSWd.] Y seruede thee bi twenti ȝeer in thin hows, fourtene [and fourtene S.] ȝeer for thi douȝtris, and sixe ȝeer for thi flockis; and thou chaungidist my mede ten sithis. [verse 42] If [but DGNQT. but if ELPRX.] God of my fadir Abraham, and the drede of Isaac hadde not helpid [holpen K.] me, perauenture now thou haddist left me nakid; the Lord bihelde [hath biholde S.] my turmentyng and the traueyl of myn hondis, and repreuyde thee ȝistir|dai. [verse 43] Laban answeride hym [Jacob S. to him X.] , The [mi ELP sup. ras. X.] douȝ|tris, and thi [Om. FN. the S.] sones, and flockis [thi flockis GN. the fl. S.] , and alle thingis whiche thou seest, ben myne, what mai Y do to my sones, and to the [Om. E.] sones of sones [my sones S.] ? [verse 44] Therfor [therfor Jacob S.] come thou, and make we boond of pees, that it be witnessyng [a witnessing S.] bitwixe me, and thee. [verse 45] And so [lo G.] Jacob took a stoon, and reiside it [it vp S.] in to a signe [signe ether title N. t. ether signe BCK sup. ras. t. ether a signe X.] , [verse 46] and seide to hise britheren, Brynge ȝe
stoonus [the stonus E.] ; whiche gadriden, and maden an heep, and eten on it. [verse 47] And Laban clepide it the heep of wittnesse [witnessing NX.] , and Jacob clepide it the heep of witnessyng; euer eithir clepide [clepide it IS.] bi the [Om. S.] proprete of his [her S.] langage. [verse 48] And Laban seide, This heep schal be wit|nesse bytwixe me and thee to day, and herfor the name therof was clepid Galaad, that is, the [clepid E.] heep of witnesse. [verse 49] And Laban addide [addide to IS.] , The Lord biholde, and deme bi|twixe vs, whanne we schulen go awei fro [verse 50] ȝow; if thou schalt turmente my douȝtris, and if thou schal [shalt S.] brynge yn othere wyues on hem, noon is witnesse of oure word, outakun God, whiche is present, and bi|holdith. [verse 51] And eft he [Laban S.] seide to Jacob, Lo! this heep, and stoon [the stoon S.] , whiche Y reiside [haue reiside S.] [verse 52] bitwixe me and thee, schal be witnesse; sotheli this heep, and stoon [the stoon S.] be in to wit|nessyng, forsothe if Y schal passe it, and go to thee, ether thou shalt passe [passe it S.] , and thenke yuel to me. [verse 53] God of Abraham, and God of Nachor, God of the fadir of hem, deme bitwixe vs. Therfor Jacob swoor [verse 54] by the drede of his fadir Ysaac; and whanne slayn sacrifices weren offrid in the hil, he [Jacob S.] clepyde his britheren to [that thei schulden C pr. m.] ete breed, and whanne thei hadden ete, thei dwelliden there. [verse 55] Forsothe Laban roos bi nyȝt, and kisside his sones, and douȝtris, and blesside hem, and turnede aȝen [Om. DGNX.] in to his place.
