CAP. XXVIII.

[verse 1] And so Isaac clepide Jacob, and blesside hym, and comaundide to hym, and seide, Nyle thou take a wijf of the kyn of Ca|naan; [verse 2] but go thou, and walke forth in to Mesopotanye of Sirie, to the hows of Ba|tuel, fadir of thi modir, and take to thee of [fro I.] thennus a wijf of the douȝtris of La|ban, thin vncle. [verse 3] Sotheli [Om. DG.] Almyȝti God blesse [blessede E.] thee, and make thee to encreesse, and multiplie thee, that thou be in to cum|panyes [a cumpanye G.] [verse 4] of puplis; and God ȝyue to thee the blessyngis [blessinge S.] of Abraham, and to thi seed aftir thee, that thou welde the lond of thi [Om. E.] pilgrymage, which he bihiȝte to thi graunt|sir. [verse 5] And whanne Ysaac hadde left hym [Jacob S.] , he [Jacob S.] ȝede [wente S.] forth, and cam in to Mesopo|tanye of Sirie, to Laban, the sone of Ba|tuel of Sirie, the brother of Rebecca, his modir. [verse 6] Forsothe Esau seiȝ that his fadir hadde blessid Jacob, and hadde sent him in to Mesopotanye of Sirie, that he schulde wedde a wijf of thennus, and that aftir the blessyng he comaundide to Jacob, and seide, Thou schalt not take a wijf of the [verse 7] douȝtris of Canaan; and that Jacob obeiede to his fadir `and modir [Om. G.] , and ȝede in to [verse 8] Sirie; also Esau preuyde [preuyde therbi S.] that his fadir bihelde not gladli the douȝtris of Canaan. [verse 9] And he [Esau S.] ȝede to Ismael, and weddide a wijf, with out these whiche he hadde bi|fore,

Melech, the douȝter of Ismael, sone of Abraham, the sistir of Nabaioth. [verse 10] Ther|for Jacob ȝede out of Bersabee, and ȝede to [in to S.] Aran. [verse 11] And whanne he hadde come to [in to S.] sum place, and wolde reste ther inne aftir the goynge doun of the sunne, he took of the stoonus that laien ther, and he put|tide [putte S.] vndur his heed, and slepte in the same place. [verse 12] And he seiȝe in sleep [slepis A pr. m. et plures. his slepis S.] a lad|dir stondynge on the erthe, and the cop ther of touchinge heuene; and he seiȝ Goddis aungels stiynge vp [Om. plures.] and goynge [verse 13] doun ther bi, and the Lord fastned [fastede G. neiȝide S.] to the laddir, seiynge to hym, Y am the Lord God of Abraham, thi fadir, and God of Isaac; Y schal ȝyue to thee and to thi seed the lond in which thou slepist. [verse 14] And thi seed schal be as the dust of erthe, thou schalt be alargid to the eest, and west, and [Om. G.] north [to the north S.] , and south; and alle lynagis [the lynagis S.] of erthe schulen be blessid in thee and in thi seed. [verse 15] And Y schal be thi kepere, whidur euer thou schalt go; and Y schal lede thee aȝen in to this lond, and Y schal not leeue [leeue thee K.] no [Om. ELP.] but Y schal fil [fulfille S.] alle thingis whiche Y seide [haue seide S.] . [verse 16] And whanne Jacob hadde wakyd of sleep, he seide, Verili the Lord is in this place, and Y wiste not. [verse 17] And [Om. S.] he seide dredynge, Hou worschipful [worschipful, that is, ferdful CGKQX. ferdful M. f. that is n. BIN. f. or n. S.] is this place! Here is [nys F.] noon other thing no but the hows of God, and the ȝate of heuene. [verse 18] Therfor Jacob roos eerli, and took the stoon which he hadde put vndur his heed, and reiside [reiside it S.] in to a title [title ether signe BGIKNXd. t. either a s. Q. t. or s. LP. t. either a mark M. signe ether title C. S. or t. E. S. or tokne S.] , and helde [helde out S.] oile aboue. [verse 19] And he clepide the name of that citee Bethel, which was clepid Lusa bifore. [verse 20] Also he [Jacob S.] auowide a vow, and seide, If God is with me, and kepith me in the weie in which Y go, and ȝyueth to me looues to ete, and [verse 21] clothis to be clothid [clothid with KSX.] , and Y turne aȝen in [in to GX pr. m.] prosperite to [in to S.] the hows of my fadir, the Lord schal be in to God to me. [verse 22] And this stoon, which Y reiside in to a title [tokne S.] , schal be clepid the hows of God, and Y schal offre

tithis to thee [the Lord S.] of alle thingis whiche thou schalt ȝyue to me.
