CAP. XXVII.

[verse 1] Forsothe Isaac wexe [wexide IKRT.] eld, and hise iȝen dasewiden, and he miȝte not se. And he clepide Esau, his more sone, and seide [he seide S.] to hym, My sone! Which answerde, Y am present. [verse 2] To whom the fadir seide, Thou seest that Y haue [am K.] woxun eld, and Y knowe not the dai of my deeth. [verse 3] Take thin [thou MN.]

BCILN.] bowe, and go out; and whanne thou hast take ony [verse 4] thing bi huntyng, make to [Om. G.] me a seew therof, as thou knowist that Y wole [wole eete S.] , and brynge [brynge it to me S.] that Y ete, and [that S.] my soule blesse thee bifore that Y die. [verse 5] And whanne Re|becca hadde herd this thing, and he hadde go [go forth S.] in to the feeld to [that he schulde C pr. m. that he S.] fille [fulfille S.] the comaund|ment [heest S.] [verse 6] of the [his S.] fadir, sche seide to hir sone Jacob, Y herde thi fadir spekynge with Esau, thi brothir, and seiynge to him, [verse 7] Brynge thou me [to me BCKMNQSWd. Om. M.] of thin huntyng, and make thow metis, that Y ete, and that Y blesse thee bifor the Lord bifor that Y die. [verse 8] Now therfor, my sone, assent to my [verse 9] counsels, and go to the floc, and brynge to me tweyne the beste kidis, that Y make metis of tho to thi fadir, whiche he etith [shal ete K.] [verse 10] gladli; and that whanne thow hast brouȝt in tho metis, and he hath ete, he blesse thee bifore that he die. [verse 11] To whom Jacob answerde, Thou knowist that Esau my bro|ther is an heeri man, and Y am [Om. D.] smethe [smethe ether playn C.] ; [verse 12] if my fadir `touchith and feelith me [shal touche or drawe me to him and fele me S.] , Y drede lest he gesse that Y wolde scorne him, and lest [Om. KS.] he brynge in cursyng on me for blessyng. [verse 13] To whom the [his S.] modir seide, My sone, this cursyng be in me; oonly here thou my vois, and go, and brynge that that Y seide. [verse 14] He ȝede, and brouȝte [brouȝte it S.] , and ȝaf [ȝaf it S.] to his modir. Sche made redi metis, [verse 15] as sche knewe that his fadir wolde [wolde haue S.] , and sche clothide Jacob in ful goode clothis of Esau, whiche sche hadde at home anentis hir silf. [verse 16] And sche `compasside the [wlappide his S.] hondis [hondis aboute S.] with litle skynnys of kiddis, and kyuerede [verse 17] the `nakide thingis [nakidnes S.] of [his S.] the necke; and sche ȝaf seew [to him the seew S.] , and bitook the [him S.] loouys whiche sche hadde bake. [verse 18] And whanne these [these metis S.] weren brouȝt in, he [Jacob S.] seide, My fadir! And he answerde, Y here; who art thou, my sone? [verse 19] And Jacob seide, Y am Esau,

thi first gendrid [bigotun I.] sone. Y haue do to thee as thou comaundist [commaundidist GIKMNOPSWd.] to [Om. QRT.] me; rise thou [thou vp and S.] , sitte, and ete of myn huntyng [my verry sone S.] , that thi soule blesse me. [verse 20] Eft [and eft G.] Ysaac seide to his sone, My sone, hou miȝtist thou fynde [fynde vensone S.] so soone? Which answerde, It was Goddis wille, that this [this thing S.] that Y wolde schulde come soone to me. [verse 21] And Isaac seide, My sone, come thou hidir, that Y touche thee, and that Y preue wher [whether EIO sec. m. S.] thou art [be K.] my sone Esau, ethir [or EILPS.] nay. [verse 22] He [and he K. Jacob S.] neiȝede to the [his S.] fadir; and whanne he [Ysaac S.] hadde feelid hym, Isaac [he S.] seide, Sotheli the vois is the vois of Jacob, but the hondis ben the hondis of Esau. [verse 23] And Isaac knew not Jacob, for the heery hondis expressiden [shewide S.] the licnesse of the more [eldre S.] sone. [verse 24] Therfor Isaac blesside him [Jacob S.] , and seide, Art thou my sone Esau? Jacob answerde, Y am. [verse 25] And Isaac seide, My sone, brynge thou to me metis of thin huntyng, that my soule blesse thee. And [Om. S.] whanne Isaac hadde ete these metis brouȝt [brouȝt to him S.] , Jacob brouȝte also wyn to Isaac [Isaac the wyn E.] , and whanne this was [verse 26] drunkun, Isaac seide to him, My sone, come thou hidir, and ȝyue [ȝyue thou I.] to me a cos. [verse 27] Jacob neiȝede [neiȝede to S.] , and kisside hym; and anoon as Isaac feelide the odour [good sauour S.] of hise clothis, he blesside him, and seide, Lo! the odour of my sone as the odour of a `feeld ful [feeld ful of flouris E pr. m. plentyuouse feeld S.] which the Lord hath blessid. [verse 28] God ȝyue to thee of the dewe of heuene, and of the fatnesse of erthe, aboundaunce of whete, [verse 29] and of wyn, and of oile; and puplis serue thee, and lynagis worschipe thee; be thou lord of thi britheren [brother W.] , and the sones of thi modir be bowid bifor thee; be he cursid [acursid GOQRT.] that cursith [curse E,] thee, and he that blessith thee, be fillid [he fillid S.] with blessyngis. [verse 30] Vnnethis Isaac hadde fillid the word, and whanne [verse 31] Jacob was gon out, Esau cam, and brouȝte [he brouȝte S.] in metis sodun [as he was beden S.] of the [his S.] huntyng to the [his S.] fadir [fadris E.] , and seide, My fadir, rise thou [thou vp S.] , and ete of the huntyng of thi sone, that [that that G.] thi

soule blesse me [Om. G.] . [verse 32] And Isaac seide, Who forsothe [Om. DG.] art thou? Which answerde, Y am Esau, thi firste gendrid [bigotun I.] sone. [verse 33] Isaac dredde bi [with K.] a greet astonying [stonying S.] ; and he wondride more, than it [Om. S.] mai be bileued, and seide, Who therfor is he which a while ago brouȝte to me huntyng [venyson S.] takun, and Y eet of alle thingis bifor that thou camest [come E. came LP.] ; and Y blesside him? and he schal be blessid. [verse 34] Whanne the wordis of the fadir weren herd, Esau rorid with a greet cry, and was [he was S.] astonyed, and seide, My fadir, blesse thou also me. [verse 35] Which seide, Thy brother cam prudentli, and took thi blessyng. [verse 36] And Esau addide [addide to IS.] , Justli his name is clepid Jacob, for lo [Om. K.] ! he supplauntide me another tyme; bifor he took awei `my firste gen|dride thingis [my firste gotun thingis I. myn eritage S.] , and now the secounde tyme he rauyschide [hath rauischide S.] priueli my blessyng. And eft he [Esau S.] seide to the [his S.] fadir, Wher thou hast [verse 37] not reserued [kepte S.] a [oo S.] blessyng also to me? Ysaac answeride, Y haue maad him [Jacob S.] thi lord, and Y haue maad suget alle hise britheren to his seruage; Y haue stablischid him in whete, and [Om. ELP.] wyn, and oile; and, my sone, what schal Y do to thee aftir these thingis? [verse 38] To whom Esau saide, Fadir, wher thou hast oneli o blessyng? Y biseche [biseeche thee S.] that also thou blesse me [to me K sec. man.] . And whanne Esau wepte [verse 39] with greet ȝellyng, Isaac was stirid, and seide to hym, Thi blessyng schal be in the [Om. IK.] fatnesse of erthe, and in the [Om. I.] dew of [verse 40] heuene fro [Om. S.] aboue; thou schalt lyue bi swerd, and thou schalt serue thi brothir, and tyme schal come whanne thou schalt shake awei, and vnbynde his ȝok fro thi nollis. [verse 41] Therfor Esau hatide euer [euir more G.] Jacob for the blessyng bi which the fadir hadde blessid hym; and Esau seide in his herte, The daies of morenyng of my fadir schulen come, and Y schal sle Jacob, my brothir. [verse 42] These thingis weren teld to Rebecca, and sche sente, and clepide hir sone Jacob, and seide to hym, Lo! Esau, thi brothir, ma|naasith [verse 43] to sle thee; now therfor, my sone,

here thou my vois, and rise thou [thou vp S.] , and fle [verse 44] to Laban, my brother, in [in to S.] Aran; and thou schalt dwelle with hym a fewe daies, til [verse 45] the woodnesse of thi brother reste, and his indignacioun ceesse, and til he forȝite tho thingis whiche thou hast don aȝens hym. Aftirward Y schal sende, and Y schal brynge thee fro thennus hidir. Whi schal Y be maad soneles of euer eithir sone in o dai? [verse 46] And Rebecca seide to Isaac, It anoieth me of my lijf for the douȝtris of Heth; if Ja|cob takith [take CELPRS.] a wijf of the kynrede [kynredis G.] of this lond, Y nyle [wile not I.] lyue.
