[verse 1] If there were a cause bitwex [bytwene BCDEFH.] eny men, and han askid [inter|peled E pr. m.] iugis, whom thei biholden to be ryȝtwyse, to hym the palme of riȝtwisnes thei shulen ȝyue, whom wickid [wicke C.] , thei shulen condempne of wickidnes [wickenesse C.] . [verse 2] Forsothe if hym that hath synned thei seen worthi, thei shulen throw doun with scourgis, and before hem thei shulen make to be betun; for the mesure of synne shal be and [in ABDFH.] the [verse 3] maner of scourgyngis, so oonlich, that the fourtith noumbre thei ouer passe not, lest foulich rent before thin eyen thi bro|ther go awey. and oon of hem with outen free children [childer C.] were deed, the wijf of the deed shal not wedde to another, but shal taak hir his brother, and he shal arere [rere C.] the seed of his brother. [verse 6] And the fyrst goten sone of hyr he shal clepe bi the name of hym, that the name of hym be not doon a wey fro Yrael. [verse 7] Forsothe if he wol not taak the wijf of his brother, that to hym bi the lawe is owid [aȝt C.] , the womman shal goo to the ȝate of the cyte; and she shal aske [enterpele E pr. m.] the more men thurȝ birth, and shal seye, The brother of my man wol not arere seed [the seed E.] of his brother in Yrael, ne me into wedlok taak. [verse 8] And anoon thei shulen maak hym to be clepid, and thei shulen aske. If he answere, I wol not taak hir [verse 9] to wijf; the womman shal come nyȝ to hym, before the aldre [alther BF.] men [men of Irael E pr. m.] , and she shal taak the sho of his foot, and spit in his face, and seye, Thus it shal be doo to a man, that wol not bilde vp the hows of [verse 10] his brother; and shal be clepid the name of hym in Yrael, The hows of the vnshod.
