[verse 1] THE eldre man to the `chosen lady [lady Electa V.] , and to hir children, the [Om. SVX.] whiche I loue in treuthe; and not I aloone, but and alle [verse 2] men that knewen [knowen NOQX.] treuthe; for the treuthe that dwellith in ȝou, and with ȝou shal ben `in to [Om. VX.] with outen ende. [verse 3] Grace be with ȝou, mercy, and pees of God the fadir, and of Jhesu Crist, the sone of the [Om. S.] fadir, in treuthe and charite. [verse 4] I ioyede ful miche, for I foond of thi sones goynge in treuthe, as we receyueden maundement of the fadir. [verse 5] And now I preye thee, lady, not as writ|inge a newe maundement to thee, but that that we hadden at the bigynnynge, that we loue eche other. [verse 6] And this is charite, that we walke up [bi V.] his maundementes. Sotheli [For whi V.] this is the [Om. ANOQSVX.] comaundement, that as ȝe herden at [in S.] the [Om. [verse 11] Sotheli [For V.] he that seith to him, Heyl, comuneth with his yuele werkis. Lo! I bifore seide to ȝou, that ȝe be not confoundid in the day of oure Lord Jhesu Crist. [verse 12] I hauynge [haue NV.] mo thinges for [Om. OSX.] to wrijte to ȝou, wolde [nolde O. and wolde V.] not bi parchemyn [parchemyn, or book ANS. parchemyn, either book V.] and ynke; sotheli [for V.] I hope `me to [that I schal V.] comynge [come SVX.] to ȝou, and speke [Y speke Q.] mouth to mouth, that ȝoure ioye be ful.
