[verse 1] Therfore puttinge [putte ȝe V.] awey al malice, and al gyle, and symulaciouns [feynynges O.] , `or feynynges [Om. OQX.] , [verse 2] `and enuyes [Om. O.] , and `al detraccioun [al detracciouns G pr. m. N. oold tradicions O. alle detracciouns V.] ; as now gendrid ȝonge children [childre S.] , resonable, with oute gyle, coueyte ȝe mylk [mylk of ful teching V.] , that in it ȝe [verse 3] wexe in to helthe; if netheles ȝe taastiden, for [that NV.] the Lord is swete. [verse 4] `To whom ȝe go|ynge nyȝe [And neiȝe ȝe to him V.] , a quyk stoon, reproued sotheli of men, forsothe [but V.] chosen of God, and ho|nourid, [verse 5] and ȝoure [ȝe ANV. ȝou OSX. ȝe ȝoure Q.] silf as quike stoones be [beth QSX.] aboue bildid [bildid in to V.] spiritual housis, holy prest|hod, for [Om. SX.] to offre spiritual hoostes [sacrifices V.] , `or offringes [Om. OVX.] , acceptable to God bi Jhesu Crist. [verse 6] For which thing the scripture holdith, Lo! I shal putte in Syon `the hiȝest stoon [a stoon heiȝest ANOQSVX.] , corner [a corner TY.] stoon, chosen, pre|cious; and he that shal bileue in to him, shal not be confoundid. [verse 7] Therfore honour to ȝou bileuynge; forsothe to men not bileuynge, the stoon whom `thei bildynge [the bylderis V.] reproueden, this is maad in to the heed [heued O.] [verse 8] of the [Om. OV.] corner; and the stoon of offencioun [hirtynge O.] , `or hirtynge [Om. OQX.] , and stoon [the stoon N.] of sclaundre, to hem that offenden [offendeden Q.] bi word, nether bileuen, in which and [Om. V.] thei ben put. [verse 9] Forsothe ȝe ben a `kynde chosun [chosen kyn V.] , kyngly [kyndely O.] presthod, holy folk, puple of purchasinge, that ȝe telle the vertues of him, that clepide ȝou fro derknesses in to his [Om. S.] wondirful liȝt.

[verse 10] The [Om. V.] whiche sum tyme not [were not V.] the [Om. V.] puple of God, `now sotheli [but now ȝe ben V.] the puple of God; the [Om. V.] which `not hauyng [haden not V.] mersy, `now forsothe hauyng [but now ȝe han V.] mersy. [verse 11] Moost dere, I beseche ȝou as comelinges, `or gestes [Om. OQVX.] , and pilgrimes, for [Om. SX.] to abstene ȝou fro fleschly desijris, [verse 12] that [the whiche O.] fiȝten aȝens the soule; hauynge [and haue ȝe V.] ȝoure conuersacioun, `or lijf [Om. OQX.] , good among hethen men, that in that thing that thei bacbiten, `or yuele treeten [Om. OX.] , of ȝou, as of mysdoers, thei biholdinge ȝou of goode werkis, glo|rifie God in the day of visitacioun. [verse 13] Be ȝe suget to eche creature of [which is V.] man, for God; other [ether OVX.] to the [Om. O.] kyng, as precellent [more worthi O.] , `or more [verse 14] worthi [Om. OX.] `in staat [of astate O.] , other [ether OVX.] to dukis, as sent of him to the veniaunce of mysdedis [mysdoeris VX.] , `or mysdoeris [Om. OVX.] , forsothe to the preysinge of goode dedis [men V. Om. X.] , `or goode men [Om. OVX.] . [verse 15] For so is the wille of God, that ȝe doynge [do V.] wel, make [and make V.] the vnkunnyngnesse of vnprudent [vnwise X.] men for [Om. SX.] to be doumbe. [verse 16] As fre men, and not as hauynge fredom the couering of malice, but as the seruauntes of God. [verse 17] Honoure ȝe alle men, loue ȝe britherhed, drede ȝe God, make [onoure V.] ȝe the [Om. QT.] kyng honourable [Om. V.] . [verse 18] Seruauntes, be ȝe suget [sogetis S.] in al drede to lordis, not onely to goode and mylde [trewe Q.] , but also [Om. Q.] to tirauntes [tryuauntis GMP. tryuauntis, either tyrauntis V.] . [verse 19] Forsothe [For V.] this is grace, if for conscience of God ony man [Om. V pr. m.] suffrith sorewes, `or heuynesses [Om. OQX.] , suffringe [and suffrith V.] vniustly. [verse 20] Sotheli [For whi V.] what grace is it, if ȝe synnynge [synnen V.] and [and ben V.] buffatid suffren [and suffren V.] ? But if ȝe `wel doynge [don wel and V.] suffren [suffren paciently V.] , this is grace [Om. V.] anentis God. [verse 21] Forsothe [For V.] in [to V.] this thing ȝe ben clepid. For [For also V.] Crist suffride for vs, leeuynge [and lefte V.] to ȝou ensaumple [exsaumple SX.] , that ȝe folewe the steppes of him. [verse 22] The [Om. VX.] which dide not synne, nether gyle is [was V.] founde [not founden O.] in his mouth. [verse 23] Which [The whiche X.] whan he was cursid, curside not;

whan he suffride, he [Om. OS.] manaside not; sotheli he bitoke him [himself V.] to `a man [the X.] demynge him vniustly. [verse 24] Whiche [and V.] he him silf suffride [bar X.] , `or bar [Om. X.] , oure synnes in his body on the [a NOQSVX.] tree, that we [we be V.] deede to synnes, lyue [and lyue V.] to riȝtwisnesse, bi whois wounde [wan wounde V.] `ȝe ben [be ȝe O. wee ben X.] heelid. [verse 25] Forsothe [For V.] ȝe weren as sheep er|ringe, but ȝe ben conuertid now to the sheperde, and bischop of ȝoure [oure X.] soulis.
