[verse 1] A [O! GMPQ.] ! ȝe witlees men of Galathie [Galathies O.] , who disceyuede ȝou for [Om. [verse 2] This thing oonli wole I lerne [leren X.] of ȝou, han [wher han V.] ȝe take the spirit of [bi V.] the [Om. S.] workis of the [Om. G pr. m. MPQ.] lawe, wherof [or of O. bi V.] the [Om. G pr. m. MPQ.] heeringe of bileue? [verse 3] So ȝe ben foolis, that whanne ȝe bigunne by spirit, now ȝe ben endid by fleisch. [verse 4] Ȝe han suffrid so [Om. A.] many thingis withoute cause, nethelees if with oute cause. [verse 5] Therfore he that ȝyueth to ȝou the spirit, and worchith vertues in ȝou, whe|thir of the worchis of lawe [the lawe G pr. m. S.] , or of heer|inge of feith? [verse 6] As it [Om. X.] is writun, Abraham bileuyde to God, and it is [was V.] rettid [arettid V.] to him to riȝtwysnesse. [verse 7] Therfore knowe ȝe, that [for O.] thei that [Om. G pr. m.] ben of the [Om. N.] feith, thei [that thei GQ. Om. V.] ben sones [the sones VX.] of Abraham. [verse 8] Forsothe the [Om. O.] scrip|ture [spirit N.] purueyinge, for God iustifieth of

feith hethen men, toold bifore to Abra|ham, For in thee alle folkis [folkis of kynde Q.] , `or hethene men [Om. GMOPQY.] , schulen be blessid. [verse 9] Therfore thei that ben of the [Om. N.] feith, schulen be blessid with feithful Abraham. [verse 10] Forsoth [Forwhi V.] who euere ben of the workis of lawe [the lawe GOS.] , ben vndir curs; for it is writun, Cursid ech [is ech QV.] man, that `schal not dwelle [dwellith not V.] in alle thingis that ben writun in the booke [bokis Y.] of lawe, that he do hem [thoo V.] . [verse 11] Forsoth for [that V.] no man is iustified [made riȝtwijsse GMPQ.] in the lawe anentis God, it is knowen, for a riȝtful man lyueth of [by O.] feith. [verse 12] Forsoth the lawe is not of bileue [byleue, bot of dreed of peyn Q.] , but he that `schal do [doth V.] tho [the O.] thingis, schal lyuen in hem [thoo V.] . [verse 13] Crist deliuerede [aȝenbouȝte V.] vs fro the curs of the lawe, maad [and was maad V.] for vs curs [the curse G. cursed O.] , `that is, sacrifice for [of O.] curs [gloss om. in VX.] ; for it is writun, Cursid [verse 14] is [Om. M.] ech [eche man OQ.] that hangith in the tree; that bless|inge [the blessyng AGMNOPQVWY sec. m.] of Abraham in hethen men schulde be maad in Crist Jhesu, that we take the biheeste of spirit by feith. [verse 15] Britheren, I seye vp [after GMPQV.] man, nethelees no man dispisith the testament [confermyde testament GMPQY sec. m.] of a [Om. NSVY.] man [man confermed NV.] , or `ordeyneth aboue [aboue ordeyneth GMP. aboue ordeyneth other thing Q.] . [verse 16] Biheestis ben seid to Abraham and to his seed; he seith [seide STXY.] not, In seedis [the seedes G.] , as in manye, but as in oon, And in [to V.] thi seed, that is, Crist. [verse 17] Forsoth I seie this, a testament confermyd of God, the [the lawe V.] which [which was maad V.] aftir foure hundrid ȝeeris [ȝer SX.] and thritti `is maad [Om. V.] lawe [a lawe SX. Om. V.] , makith not voyde [Om. O.] `for to a|voyde [Om. O. to auoiden S. for to do aweye Q. to voyden X.] the biheeste [heest V.] . [verse 18] Forwhy if of lawe the [is the GMPQ. were the V.] heritage, now not of biheeste. For|soth God ȝaf to Abraham bi aȝenbiheeste [aȝein bihest, that is, by feith Q.] . What therfore [therfore profitith the Q.] lawe? [verse 19] For trespassynge it [Om. G.] is putt, til the seed cam, to whom God bihiȝte [hadde bihiȝt V.] thingis [the lawe V.] ordeyned by aungelis, in the hond of a medyatour. [verse 20] Forsoth a [Om. N.] mediatour is not of o [Om. G.] thing. Forsoth God

is oon. [verse 21] Therfore the [is the QV.] lawe anentis [aȝens AGNOPSTVWY. aȝen MX. aȝeines Q.] , `or contrarie to [or contrarieth to G. Om. OQX.] , the heestis [bihestis GNSTWXY.] of God? Fer be it. Sothli [Forsothe M. For V.] if ther were a lawe ȝouun, the [Om. VX.] which [that X.] myȝte quykene, vereily [verre SXY. verey T.] riȝt|wysnesse were of lawe. [verse 22] But the scrip|ture enclosyde alle thingis vndir synne, that biheeste schulde be ȝouun of the [Om. N.] feith of Jhesu Crist to men bileuynge. [verse 23] Forsothe bifore that the feith cam, we weren kept vndir the lawe, schette to gi|dere in to that faith that was to be schew|id. [verse 24] `And so [Therfore V.] the lawe [lawe, for it kept us fro vnleful thing Q.] was oure litil maistir in Crist, that we be iustified [maad riȝtwijse GMPQ.] of the [Om. OT.] feith. [verse 25] But where [aftir that V.] the feith cam, now we ben not [Om. G pr. m.] vndir the litil maistir [maistir, by constreynynge of lawe Q.] . [verse 26] Forsoth [For V.] `alle ȝe [we Q.] ben the sones of God by feith in `Crist Jhesu [Jhesu Crist X.] . [verse 27] Forsothe [Forwhi V.] who euere ȝe ben baptysid in Crist [Crist Jhesu X.] , ȝe han clothid [clothid in N. clad SX.] Crist. [verse 28] Ther is not Jew, neither Greek; ther is not seruaunt, nethir [ne Q.] fre man; ther is not [not nether Q.] male, nether female [female, that hath vnclothid Crist, that ben baptized in hym Q.] ; sotheli [Forwhi V.] alle ȝe ben oon [oen ȝe ben SXY.] in Crist Jhesu. [verse 29] Forsoth if ȝe ben of Crist, therfore ȝe ben seed [the seed V.] of A|braham, vp [after the GMPQ. bi the V.] biheeste eyris [ȝe ben eyris Q.] .
