CAP. XII.

[verse 1] The Lord forsothe seyde to Moyses and [verse 2] Aaron in the loond of Egipte, This moneth to ȝow the bigynnynge of the [Om. BDEFH.] monethis shal be the first in monethes of the ȝeer. [verse 3] Spek ȝe to al the cumpanye of the sones of Yrael, and sey ȝe to hem, The tenthe day of this moneth tak echon a lombe bi [verse 4] meynese and her howsis; if forsothe the noumbre is to litil, that it may not suffice to eet the lombe, he shal tak his neiȝbore, that is ioyned to his hows after the noum|bre of the soules, that may suffice to the etyng of the lombe. [verse 5] Forsothe it shal ben a lombe withouten wemme, a maal of o [a E.] ȝeer; after the which riyt ȝe shulen take [verse 6] also a kydde; and ȝe shulen kepe it vnto the fourtenthe day of this moneth; and al the multitude of the sones of Yrael shal offre it at [a A.] euen. [verse 7] And thei shulen take of his bloode, and leggen vpon either post, and in the thresshwoldes of the howses, in the whiche thei shulen eet it;

[verse 8] and thei shulen eet flesh that nyȝt, rostid with fier, and therf looues with wylde letuse. [verse 9] Ȝe shulen not eten of it eny thing raw, ne sothun with water, but oneli rostid with fier; the heed with his feet [verse 10] and entrayls ȝe shulen vowre; ne there shal not leeue of it eny thing to to mor|wen; and if eny thing be laft, with fier ȝe shulen brenne it. [verse 11] So forsothe ȝe shu|len eten it; ȝe shulen girde about ȝoure reynes, and ȝe shulen haue shoon in ȝoure feet, holdynge staues in hoondis; and ȝe shulen eete hastiliche; it is forsothe phase, that is to seye, the passyng forth of the Lord. [verse 12] And Y shall passe thurȝ al the loond of Egipte that nyȝt, and Y shal smyit alle the first gotun in the loond of Egipte, fro man vnto beeste; and in alle the goddis [goodis AF.] of Egipte Y shal make domes; Y a Lord. [verse 13] The bloode for|sothe shal be to ȝow into tokne, in the housis in the [Om. BDEFH.] which ȝe shulen be; and Y shal se the bloode, and Y shal ouerpasse ȝow; and there shal not be in ȝow a ven|iaunce destruyinge, whanne Y shal smyit the loond of Egipte. [verse 14] Forsothe ȝe shulen han this day into mynde, and ȝe shulen halwe it solempne to the Lord in ȝoure generaciouns with heriyng euerlastynge. [verse 15] Seuen daies ȝe shulen eten therf breed; in the first day there shal be no sour dowȝ in ȝoure howses; who so euer etith sowred breed, shal perishe that soule fro Yrael, fro the first day vnto the seuenthe day. [verse 16] The first day shal be holy and so|lempne, and the seuenthe day shal be wurshipful in the same feeste; no thing of werk ȝe shulen doon in hem, out tak [verse 17] thes that perteyneth to etyng; and ȝe shulen kepe therf breed. Forsothe in that same day Y shal leede ȝoure oost out of the loond of Egipte; and ȝe shulen kepe this day in ȝoure generaciouns in ryte euerlastynge. [verse 18] The firste moneth, the four|tenth [fourten A.] day of the moneth, at euen, ȝe shulen

eet therf breed, vnto the oon and twentith day of the same moneth at euen. [verse 19] Seuen dayes soure breed shal not be foundun in ȝoure howses; who so etith soure breed, his soule shal perishe fro the companye of Yrael, as wel of cumlyngis, as of with ynne borne of the loond. [verse 20] Al soure breed ȝe shulen not eet, and in alle ȝoure dwell|yng places ȝe shulen eet therf breed. [verse 21] Moyses forsothe clepide alle the eldren of the sones of Yrael, and seyde to hem, Gothe, takynge a beeste bi ȝoure meynese, [verse 22] offre ȝe paske; and the litil sprynkil of ysop wetith in bloode, that is in the ne|thir threswold, and sprengith of it the ouerthreswold, and either post; noon of ȝow alle shal go out of [Om. BDE sec. m. F sec. m. H.] the dore of his hows vnto the morwen tyde. [verse 23] The Lord forsothe shal passe forth [Om. AF.] smytynge the Egipciens; and whanne he seeth [seeyȝ BDFH.] the bloode in the threswald, and in either post, he shal ouer goo the dore of the hows, and he shall not suffre the smyter goo into ȝoure howsis, and hurten. [verse 24] Kepe thow this word lawful to thee and to thi sones vnto withouten ende. [verse 25] And whanne ȝe shulen goon into the loond that the Lord is to ȝyue to ȝow, as he hath biho|tun, [verse 26] ȝe shulen kepe thes cerymonyes [sermonyes A.] ; and whanne ȝoure sones shulen seye to ȝow, What is this religioun? [verse 27] ȝe shulen seye to hem, It is the sacrifice for the ouercomun enemys of the passing of the Lord, whanne he passide forthe vpon the hows [housis E.] of the sones of Israel in Egipte, smytyng [smyten A sup. ras.] the Egipciens, and oure hows [houses BDEH.] delyuer|ynge. And the puple bowid anowryde. [verse 28] And the sones of Yrael goon out, diden as the Lord comaundyde to Moyses and Aaron. [verse 29] It was doon forsothe in the myd|dil of the nyȝt, the Lord smoot alle the fyrst gotun in the loond of Egipte, fro the

fyrst gotun of Pharao, that sat in his see, vnto the first gotun of the caytif wom|man, that was in prisoun, and alle the first gotun of beestis. [verse 30] And Pharao aroos the nyȝt, and alle his seruauntis, and al Egipte; and ther was sprongun a greet crye in Egipte; and forsothe there was not an hows, in the which leye not the deed. [verse 31] And Moyses and Aaron clepid in the nyȝt, Pharao seith, Ryseth, and goth out fro my puple, and ȝe and the sones of Yrael; gothe, and sacrifieth to the Lord, [verse 32] as ȝe seyn; ȝoure sheip and ȝoure [Om. BDEH.] droues takith, as ȝe han askid; and goynge a wey blesse ȝe to me. [verse 33] And the Egipciens nediden the puple to goon out of the loond swiftly, seiynge, Alle we shulen dye! [verse 34] Thanne the puple tok sprengid meel [melu BDEFH.] , or it were sowrid; and byndynge it [verse 35] in chaf, putte vpon her shuldres. And the sones of Yrael diden as the Lord co|maundide [had comaundid BDE sec. m. F pr. m. H.] to [Om. D.] Moyses; and thei askiden of the Egipciens silueren and goldun ves|sels, and myche clothing. [verse 36] Forsothe the Lord ȝaf grace to the puple before the Egipciens, that thei wolden leene hem; and thei spuyleden the Egipciens. [verse 37] And the sones of Yrael ȝeden fro Remesse into Sochoth, almoost six hundryd thowsynd of foot men, with outen children and wym|men; [verse 38] but and the comoun of either sex [six A pr. m. sexus D.] `or kynde [Om. BDEFH. id est, sexus. F marg. H interlin.] vnnoumbrable [and vnnoumbrable BDEH.] steyden vp with hem; sheip, and droues, and ful many hauynge lijf of dyuerse kynde. [verse 39] And thei bakiden meele, that a litil before spreng|ide thei token out of Egipte, and thei maden therf looues vnder asken; and thei myȝten not be maad sowre, the Egip|ciens constreynynge to goon out, and not suffrynge to mak eny dwellyng, ne eny thing of sowel there com to to maken redi. [verse 40] The dwellyng places forsothe of the sones

of Yrael, that thei dwelliden yn Egipte, [verse 41] was of four hundred and thretti ȝeer; the whiche fulfillid, the same day ȝede al the oost of the Lord out of the loond of E|gipte. [verse 42] This is nyȝt of the Lord able to be kept, whanne he ladde hem out of the loond of Egipte; this owen to kepe alle the sones of Yrael in her generaciouns. [verse 43] The Lord forsothe seide to Moyses and Aaron, This is the religioun of phask; [verse 44] ech alien shal not ete therof; al forsothe seruaunt [seruauntes D.] bouȝt be he circumcidid, and [verse 45] so eet he; comlyng and hyryd seruaunt [verse 46] shulen not eet thereof; in oon hows it shal be etun, ne ȝe shulen not bere of his fleshe out, ne boon of it ȝe shulen breek. [verse 47] Alle the companye of the sones of Yrael [verse 48] shal doo it; that if eny of pilgrymes wole come into ȝoure heriyng of religioun, and do the pask of the Lord, before eche maal child of him shal be circumcidid, and thanne with riȝt he shal halewe, and he shal be togidere as a with ynne gotun of the loond; if eny forsothe be not circum|cidid, he shal not ete therof. [verse 49] The same lawe shal be to the with ynne gotun, and to the comlyng tilyer, that pilgrimagith anentis ȝow. [verse 50] And alle the sones of Yrael diden as the Lord comaundide to Moyses and Aaron. [verse 51] And in the same day the Lord ladde the sones of Yrael out of the loond of Egipte, bi her companyes.
