CAP. VII.

[verse 1] Therfore, moost dereworthe britheren [Om. X.] , we hauynge thes ȝiftis [biheestis V.] , clense [clense we MPQ.] vs fro alle filthe of fleisch and spirit [spirit, outward and inward Q.] , perfytli mak|ynge halowynge in the drede of `the Lord [God V.] . [verse 2] Take ȝe vs [vs, to ȝoure lederis Q.] ; we han hurt no man [man, by yuel ensaumple Q.] , we han corupt no man, we han bigylid no man. [verse 3] I seye not [not these thinges Q.] for [to AG sec. m. MNOPT. Om. G pr. m. V.] ȝoure condempnynge; forsoth [for V.] I seide [seye K.] bifore, that ȝe ben in oure [ȝoure KV.] hertis, for [Om. SX.] to deie to gidere, and lyue to gidere. [verse 4] Moche trist is to me anentis ȝou, moche gloriynge is to me for ȝou. I am fulfillid [fillid V.] with comfort, I abounde, `or am plenteuous [Om. OX.] , in ioye in al oure tribulacioun. [verse 5] Forwhi and whanne we hadden comen to Macedonye, oure fleisch hadde no reste, but we suffriden [suffren V.] al [al oure W.] tribulacioun; forsoth [Om. V.] withouteforth, fiȝtingis [fyȝtynge Y.] , `with ynneforth, dredis [dredis weren withinne V.] . [verse 6] But he [God V.] that comfortith meeke men, God [Om. V.] comfortide [comfortith V.] vs [and vs G pr. m. MQT.] in the comynge of Tyte. [verse 7] Forsoth not oonli in the comynge of him, but also in the comfort by which he `com|fortide

me [was comfortid V.] in ȝou, tellinge to vs ȝoure desyr, ȝoure wepinge, ȝoure loue for me, so that I ioyede [ioye N.] more. [verse 8] For `and if [thouȝ V.] I made ȝou sori in `a pistle [epistle N. pistle, forthinkynge ȝoure synne Q. an epistil S.] , now [Om. V.] it rewith `me not [not me GMPQT.] ; and if [thouȝ V.] it rewide, I [Om. V.] seynge that [Om. V.] thouȝ [thouȝ thilk pistle V.] I [Om. V.] made ȝou sory `in that [Om. V.] [verse 9] pistle [epistell GNOQST. Om. V.] at an hour, now `haue I [I haue GMPQT. haue XY.] ioye; not for ȝe weren maad sorowful [sory O.] , but for ȝe weren maad sorowful to penaunce. Sothli [Forwhi V.] ȝe ben maad sory aftir God, that in no thing ȝe suffre peirement of vs [vs, for al oure doynge profitith to ȝou conuertid Q.] . [verse 10] Forsoth [Forwhi V.] that [Om. SX. the V.] sorwe that is aftir God, worchith penaunce in to stedefast heelthe; forsoth sorwe of the world worchith deeth. [verse 11] Lo! sotheli this same thing, ȝou for [Om. SX.] to be sorowful aftir God, how moche bisynesse it worchith in ȝou [ȝou, of amendyng, and not onely amending it wirchith Q.] ; but defending [defendyng, fro efte fallynge Q.] , but indignacioun [indignacioun aȝein hym silf, sham|ynge his yuel Q.] , but drede, but desyr, but loue, but veniaunce [veniaunce, to punysche synne Q.] . In [And K.] alle thingis ȝe han ȝouun [Om. X.] ȝou [ȝour GMPT.] silf for [Om SX.] to be vndefoulid in cause [the cause V.] , `or nede [Om. OVX. or need that ȝe do Q.] . [verse 12] Therfore `and if [thouȝ V.] I wroot to ȝou, not [I wroot not V.] for him [hym onely I wrote Q.] that dide iniurie, nether for him that suffride, but for [Om. X.] to schewe oure bysynesse, the [Om. V.] which we han for [to G pr. m. MPQT.] ȝou [ȝou alle, for ȝour amendyng Q.] bifore God. [verse 13] Therfore we ben comfortid [coumfortide, for this thing we purpos|iden, and speedfully it byfelle Q.] , forsothe in oure [ȝoure V.] com|fort more [forsothe more O.] plenteuously we ioyeden [ioyen O.] more on the ioye of Tyte, for his spirit is fulfillid of alle ȝou [ȝou, hopynge ȝoure amend|ynge Q.] . [verse 14] And if I gloriede ony thing anentis him of ȝou [ȝou, commending ȝou Q.] , I am not confoundid, `or schamyd [Om. OX.] ; but as we han spokun to ȝou alle thingis `in treuthe [Om. N.] , so [as N.] and oure [ȝoure Y.] glorie that was at Tyte, is maad treuthe. [verse 15] And the entraylis of him [hym, that is, his inward affecciouns Q.] ben more plenteuously [plenteuous T.] in ȝou, `of him [Om. GMOPQT. and of hym W. hym X.] hauynge in mynde the obedience of ȝou alle, how with drede and tremblinge ȝe resseyueden him. [verse 16] I haue [Om. G.] ioye, that in alle thingis I triste [tristid V.] in ȝou.
