[verse 1] Sue ȝe charite, loue ȝe spiritual thingis, more forsoth that ȝe prophecie. [verse 2] Sothli he that spekith in tunge, spekith not to men, but to God; forsoth [forwhi V.] no man heer|ith. Sothli the spirit spekith mysteries. [verse 3] Forwhi he that prophecieth, spekith to men, to edificacioun, and monestynge, and comfortynge, `or solasynge [Om. GMNOPTVX. or counseilynge Q.] . [verse 4] He that spekith in tunge, edifieth him silf; for|soth he that prophecieth, edyfieth the chirche of God. [verse 5] Forsothe I wole `ȝou alle [that alle ȝee V.] for [Om. SVX.] to [Om. V.] speke in tungis, `but more [more forsothe X.] `for to [to S. that ȝe VX.] prophecie. Forwhi he that pro|phecieth, is more [more worthy Q.] than he that spekith in [with OX.] tungis, `or langagis [Om. NOY.] ; no [Om. X.] but [but if X.] per|auenture he interprete [declare O.] , `or declare [Om. OX.] , that the chirche take edificacioun. [verse 6] Now for|soth, britheren, if [Om. X pr. m. Y.] I schal [Om. V.] come to ȝou, spekynge [and speke V.] in [with O.] tungis, what schal I [it V.] pro|fyte [profite to ȝou V.] , no [Om. X.] but if I schal [Om. V.] speke to ȝou ether [other M et P passim. or S.] in [in the K.] reuelacioun, ethir [or NSX.] in science [the science V.] , ether [or SX.] in prophecie, ether [or SX.] in techinge [techyngis Q.] ? [verse 7] Nethelees tho [thees O.] thingis that ben with oute soule, `or lyf [ether lijf O. Om. X.] , ȝyuynge voyces, ether pype, ether [or SX.] harpe, no [Om. OX.] ; and he that spekith, to me `a barbar [schal be a barbarik V.] . [verse 12] So and ȝe, for ȝe ben loueris of spiritis [spiritis, desirynge his ȝiftis Q. spiritis, that is, of goostly ȝiftis ve.] , to [to the GMP.] edifi|cacioun of the chirche seke [seke ȝe N. seketh SX.] that ȝe [Om. N. he O.] be plenteuous. [verse 13] And therfore he that spekith in tunge, preie [preȝe he X.] , that he interprete, `or expowne [Om. NX.] . [verse 14] Forwhi if I preye in tunge, my spirit preieth; forsoth [Om. V.] my mynde, `or resoun [Om. OX. or vndirstondinge V.] , is withoute fruyt. [verse 15] Therfore what thing is? I schal preie in spirit, I schal preie and in mynde, `or resoun [Om. NOVX.] ; I schal seie salm in spirit, I schal seye salm in [also in V. and in X sec. m.] mynde, `or resoun [Om. OSVX.] . [verse 16] Forwhi if thou `schalt blesse [blessist V.] in spirit, who fulfillith [fillith V.] the place of an ydiote, `or vnlerid man [Om. [verse 18] I do graces [thankynges O.] to my God, for I speke in [verse 19] the langagis [langage SVWY. tunge Y.] of alle ȝou; but in the chirche I wole speke fyue wordis in my witt, that and I teche othere men, than ten thousandis [thousande GMPQSTX.] of [Om. X.] wordis in tunge [tunge not vndurstonde O. tunge oonly, with outen de|clarynge Q.] . [verse 20] Britheren, nyle ȝe be maad children in wittis, but in malice `be ȝe [beth SX.] litil; forsoth

[verse 21] Sothly [For V.] in the lawe it is writun, For in othere tungis and othere [in other WX.] lippis I schal speke to this peple, and nethir so `it schal [thei schulen V.] heere me, seith the Lord. [verse 22] `And so [Therfore V.] langagis ben in to [Om. X.] tokene, not to feithful men, but to men out of the feith; forsoth prophe|syes not [ben not QTV.] to men out of feith [the feith AGMNOPQSTVWXY.] , but to feithful men. [verse 23] Therfore if al the chirche come to gidere in to oon, and alle men speke in tungis [tungis oonli Q.] , sothli if ydiotes [ydols K.] entren [Om. V.] , `or men out of the feith [Om. O. either men out of the feith entren V.] , wher thei `seyn not [schulen not seie V.] , What ben ȝe wood [voyde O.] ? [verse 24] Forsoth if alle men prophecien [prophecieden W.] , forsoth if ony vn|feithful man or ydiot entre, he is conuict of alle, he is wyseli demed of alle [alle culpable Q.] . [verse 25] For|soth [For V.] the hid thingis of his herte ben knowen, and [Om. O.] so he fallinge [schal falle V.] doun `in to [on V.] the face, schal [and schal V.] worschipe God, schewinge [and schewe V.] verily that God `in ȝou is [is in ȝou GMQTV.] . [verse 26] Therfor, britheren, what [in what W.] is? Whanne ȝe comen to gidere, ech of ȝou hath a salm, he hath techinge, he hath apocalips, `or reuela|cioun [Om. OX.] , he hath tunge, he hath `interpret|ynge [expownyng O.] , `or expownynge [Om. NOX.] ; be alle thingis don to edificacioun. [verse 27] Whethir a man spekith [speke X.] in tunge, aftir [be this don bi V.] tweyne [two GMPSTX. two togidere Q. twey men V.] , `or as moche thre [or as michel thre AGOPQTWY. or as moche after thre Q. either thre at the mooste V.] , and by partis [partis spekynge in the chirche Q. alle partis V pr. m.] , that oon in|terprete [interprete, or declare to the pepul Q.] . [verse 28] Forsoth if ther be not an interpretour, be he stille, `or speke not [Om. OX. or speke he not V.] , in [that spekith in Q.] the chirche; sothli speke he to him silf, and to God. [verse 29] Sothli [Om. V.] prophetis tweyne [two GMPQSTX.] or thre seye [sey thei G sec. m. seith T.] , and othere [other men G sec. m.] wysely [wyse T.] deme [deme what thei seyn Q.] . [verse 30] That if ony thing [thing of harde Q.] schal [Om. V.] be schewid to `oon sittinge [a sittere V.] , `the formere be [be the former GMPQT.] stille. [verse 31] For|soth [For V.] ȝe mown prophecie alle, by [Om. OQT.] ech bi him silf, that alle men lerne [lere SX.] , and alle [alle men Q.] moneste. [verse 32] And the spiritis of prophetis

[verse 33] ben sugetis [soget V.] to prophetis [prophetis, eche mekely lernynge of other and comynyng with other Q.] ; sothli [forwhi V.] God is not of dissencioun, but of pees; as [and as WXY.] and [Om. AG pr. m. NTWXY.] in alle chirchis of hooly men I teche [preche GMPQT.] . [verse 34] Wymmen in chirchis be stille; sothli [for V.] it is not suffrid to hem for [Om. SX.] to speke, but for [Om. SX.] to be suget, as the lawe seith. [verse 35] For|soth [For V pr. m.] if thei wolen ony thing lerne, at hom axe thei her hosebondis [hosebondis, feithful in the Lord Q.] ; forsoth [for V.] it is foul thing [Om. O.] to [to a AMNOPQSTVXY. a G.] womman for [Om. S.] to speke in chirche [the chirche GMNPQT.] . [verse 36] Whether of ȝou the word of God cam forth, or to ȝou aloone it cam? [verse 37] If ony man is seyn for [Om. X.] to be a prophete, `or spiritual [Om. SX.] , knowe he tho [the O.] thingis that I wryte to ȝou, for thei [tho V.] ben the co|maundementis of the Lord. [verse 38] Forsothe if ony man vnknowith, he schal be vn|knowen. [verse 39] `And so [Therfore V.] , bretheren, loue ȝe for [Om. SX.] to prophecie, and nyle ȝe forbede for [Om. NSX.] to speke in tungis [tungis, myche more for [be] de ȝe not prophetis Q.] . [verse 40] Forsoth be alle thingis [thing N.] don honestli [honestly with pees Q.] , and vp [after Q. bi due V.] ordre in [among O.] ȝou [ȝou bifore seyde Q.] .
