CAP. XIV.
[verse 1] Sue ȝe charite, loue ȝe spiritual thingis, more forsoth that ȝe prophecie. [verse 2] Sothli he that spekith in tunge, spekith not to men, but to God; forsoth [forwhi V.] no man heer|ith. Sothli the spirit spekith mysteries. [verse 3] Forwhi he that prophecieth, spekith to men, to edificacioun, and monestynge, and comfortynge, `or solasynge [Om. GMNOPTVX. or counseilynge Q.] . [verse 4] He that spekith in tunge, edifieth him silf; for|soth he that prophecieth, edyfieth the chirche of God. [verse 5] Forsothe I wole `ȝou alle [that alle ȝee V.] for [Om. SVX.] to [Om. V.] speke in tungis, `but more [more forsothe X.] `for to [to S. that ȝe VX.] prophecie. Forwhi he that pro|phecieth, is more [more worthy Q.] than he that spekith in [with OX.] tungis, `or langagis [Om. NOY.] ; no [Om. X.] but [but if X.] per|auenture he interprete [declare O.] , `or declare [Om. OX.] , that the chirche take edificacioun. [verse 6] Now for|soth, britheren, if [Om. X pr. m. Y.] I schal [Om. V.] come to ȝou, spekynge [and speke V.] in [with O.] tungis, what schal I [it V.] pro|fyte [profite to ȝou V.] , no [Om. X.] but if I schal [Om. V.] speke to ȝou ether [other M et P passim. or S.] in [in the K.] reuelacioun, ethir [or NSX.] in science [the science V.] , ether [or SX.] in prophecie, ether [or SX.] in techinge [techyngis Q.] ? [verse 7] Nethelees tho [thees O.] thingis that ben with oute soule, `or lyf [ether lijf O. Om. X.] , ȝyuynge voyces, ether pype, ether [or SX.] harpe, no [Om.
