[verse 1] What therfore schulen we seye, `oure fadir Abraham [Abraham oure fadir VX.] for [vp the flesche for GMP. Om. SX. vp the flesch V.] `to haue [Om. V.] founden vp [Om. GMPV. after O.] the fleysch [Om. GMPV.] ? [verse 2] Forsoth [For V.] if Abraham be iustified of the workis of lawe [the lawe OV sec. m. X.] , he hath glorie, but not anentis [anent X passim.] God. [verse 3] `What soth|li [For whi what V.] seith the scripture? Abraham bileuede to God, and it is [was V.] rettid [arettid V.] to him to riȝt|wysnesse. [verse 4] Forsoth to him that worchith mede is not `ȝouun to [ȝouun OX. arettid V.] , `or rettid [Om. MOPVX.] , vp grace, but vp dette. [verse 5] But [Sotheli V.] to hym that worchith not, forsoth [but V.] bileuynge [the byleuynge O.] into him that iustifyeth the wickid [meke SX.] man, `or vn|pitous [Om. OX.] , his feith is rettid [arettid V.] to riȝtwysnesse [riȝtfulnesse V.] , vp the purposinge [purpos V.] of Goddis grace. [verse 6] As and Dauid seith the blessidnesse of a man, to [Om. N.] whom God acceptith [acceptith, he ȝeueth to hem N. acceptid S.] riȝtwys|nesse withoute werkis [the werkis QUX.] `of the lawe [Om. X.] , [verse 7] Blessid thei [be thei G sec. m. V.] , whos wickidnessis ben for|ȝouun, and whos synnes ben keuered, `or hid [Om. OX.] . [verse 8] Blessid that [is that NV. the QSWX.] man, to whom God rettide [arettide V.] not synne. [verse 9] Therfore this blessid|nesse dwellith [dwellith it GMP. dwellith not Q.] oonly in circumcisioun, or also in prepucie, `or staat of hethene men [Om. OVX.] ? Forsothe we seyn, for [that V.] the feith is [was V.] rettid [arettid V.] to Abraham to riȝtwysnesse. [verse 10] Hou ther|fore is [was V.] it rettid [arettid V.] ? in circumcisioun, or in prepucie? Not in circumsioun, but in pre|pucie. [verse 11] And he took a signe of circum|cisioun, a markynge, `or tokenynge [Om. OX.] , of riȝtwysnesse of feith that [which V.] is in prepucie, that he be fadir of alle men bileuynge by prepucie, that it be rettid [arettid V.] and [also V.] to hem [verse 12] to riȝtwysnesse; and that he be fadir of circumcisioun, not oonly to hem that ben of circumcisioun, but and [Om. G pr. m.] to hem that suen his [the NV.] steppis `of the feith [Om. G pr. m.] `of our fadir Abraham, that is in prepucie [which feith is in prepucie of oure fadir Abraham V.] . eyr of the world, but bi the riȝtwysnesse of feith. [verse 14] Sothli [Forsothe O.] if thei that ben of the lawe, ben eyris, feith is anentyschid [distroyed O.] , `or distroyed [Om. OX.] , biheeste is don awey. [verse 15] Forsoth [Forwhi V.] the lawe worchith wraththe; sothli wher [whether G pr. m.] the lawe is not, nethir is [Om. S.] preuaricacioun, `or trespassinge [Om. O.] . [verse 16] Therfore of [riȝtfulnesse is of V.] the feith, that vp grace biheeste be stable [stedefast O.] , `or stede|fast [Om. OX.] , to ech seed, not to that seed oonly that is of the lawe, but to that that is of the [Om. V.] feith of Abraham, the [Om. V.] which is fadir of vs alle. [verse 17] As it is writun, For I haue sett thee fadir of manye folkis, bifore God to whom thou hast bileuyd. The [Om. V.] which God [Om. X.] quykeneth deede [the deade X.] men [Om. X.] , and clepith tho thingis that ben not, as tho that ben. [verse 18] The [Om. V.] which Abraham [Om. X.] aȝens hope bileu|ede in to [Om. N.] hope, that he schulde be maad fadir of manye folkis, vp that it [that Q.] is seid to hym, Thus schal [shal be X.] thi seed be [Om. X.] , as sterris [the sterres X.] of heuene [the heuen O.] , and as grauel, `or sond [Om. NVX.] , that is in the [Om. X.] brynke of the [Om. O.] see. [verse 19] And he is [was V.] not maad [Om. V.] vnstedefast in the bileue, nethir he biheld his body now [thanne V.] nyȝ deed, whanne he was almoost of [Om. O.] an hundrid ȝeer, and the wombe of Sare nyȝ deed. [verse 20] Also in the byheeste of God he doutide not with vntrust; but he is [was V.] com|fortid in bileue, ȝyuynge glorie to God, [verse 21] witinge moost fully for [that V.] what euere thingis God hath bihiȝt, he is myȝti and [also V.] for [Om. SVX.] to do. [verse 22] Therfore it is [was V.] rettid [arettid V.] to him to riȝtwysnesse. [verse 23] Forsothe it is not writun oonly for hym, for it is [was V.] rettid [arettid V.] to him to [verse 24] riȝtwysnesse, but and for [to K.] vs, to which it schal be rettid [arettid V.] , beleuynge in to hym that reyside oure Lord Jhesu Crist fro deede spiritis [Om. X.] . [verse 25] The [Om. V.] which is [was V.] bitakun for oure synnes, and roos aȝen for oure ius|tifyinge [iustifyingis K.] .
