[verse 1] Therfore now no thing of dampnacioun is to hem that ben in `Crist Jhesu [Jhesu Crist MPQ.] , the [Om. VX.] whiche wandren not aftir the fleisch. [verse 2] Forsoth [For V.] the [the lawe of NV.] spirit of lyf in Crist Jhesu hath delyuered me fro the lawe of synne, and deeth. [verse 3] Forwhi that that was vnpos|sible to the lawe, in what [that O.] thing it was syk, `or freel [Om. OVX.] , by fleisch, God sendinge [sente V.] his sone in to the liknesse of fleisch of synne, of [and of QV.] the [Om. G pr. m. MPQV.] synne dampnede [he dampnyde GMPQ. hath dampned N.] synne in [verse 4] fleisch; that the iustifiynge of lawe were fulfillid in vs, that not [goon not V.] aftir the fleisch wandren [we wandren Q. Om. V.] , but aftir the spirit. [verse 5] Forsoth [For OV.] thei that ben aftir the fleisch, saueren tho thingis that ben of the [Om. X.] fleisch; but thei that ben after the spirit, feelen tho thingis that ben of the spirit. [verse 6] Forwhi the pru|dence of fleisch is deeth; forsoth the [Om. W.]

prudence of spirit lyf [is lijf V.] and [in S.] pees. [verse 7] For the wysdom of fleish is enemy to God; forsoth [for V.] it is not suget to the lawe of God, sothly [for V.] nethir it may [may be suget to the lawe N.] . [verse 8] Forsoth [For O.] thei that ben in fleisch, mown not plese to God. [verse 9] Sothli ȝe ben not in fleisch, but in spirit; `nethelees if [if netheles V.] the spirit of God dwellith [dwelle SX.] in ȝow. Forsoth if ony [ony man Q.] hath not the spirit of Crist, this is not his. [verse 10] Forsoth [Sothely O.] if Crist is [is not G pr. m.] in ȝou, sothli the body is deed for [fro NV.] synne, but the spirit lyueth for iustifiynge. [verse 11] For if the spirit of him that reiside Jhesu Crist fro deede spiritis [Om. X.] dwellith [dwelle SX.] in ȝou, he that reiside Jhesu Crist fro deede spiritis [Om. OX.] , schal quykene and [Om. O. also V.] ȝoure deedli bodies, for the spirit of him dwellinge [dwelleth NQ. is dwellynge O.] in ȝou. [verse 12] Ther|fore, bretheren, we ben dettours, not to the fleisch, that we lyue aftir the fleisch. [verse 13] Forsoth [For V.] if ȝe schulen lyue aftir the fleisch, ȝe schulen deie; forsoth if ȝe bi spirit [the spirit Q.] `schulen sle [sleen V.] the deedis of fleish [ȝoure flesch SWXY.] , ȝe schulen lyue. [verse 14] Sothli who euere ben lad by the [Om. V.] spirit of God, thes ben the sones of God. [verse 15] Forsothe [For V.] ȝe han not taken eftsoone the spirit of seruage in drede, but ȝe han taken the spirit of adopcioun of sones, `that is, to be sones of God by grace [Om. X.] , in which spirit [Om. X.] we cryen, Abba, fadir. [verse 16] Forsoth `the ilke [that X.] spirit ȝeldith witnessyng to oure spirit, that we ben the [verse 17] sones of God; forsoth if sones, and eyris, sothli eyris of God, trewli [sothely Q.] euene eyris of Crist; if nethelees we `to gidere suffren [suffren togidere V.] , that and we be glorified to gidere. [verse 18] Trewli I deme, that the passions [passioun N.] of this tyme ben not euene worthi [worth A sec. m. GMNPQV.] to the glorie to comynge [comen SX.] , that schal be schewid in [on WY.] vs. [verse 19] Forwhi [For X.] the abydinge of creature, `that is, man [Om. X.] , abidith the schewinge of the sones of God. [verse 20] Sothli the creature is suget to vanyte, not willinge, but for him that

`sugetide it [made it soget V.] , `or made it suget [Om. NOVX.] , in hope; [verse 21] for and `the ilke [that X.] creature schal be dely|uered fro seruage of corupcioun in to liberte of the [Om. GMPQSX.] glorie of the sones of God. [verse 22] Sothli we witen, that ech creature insor|with [soroweth OV. in sorwith withinne Q.] , and childith [traueilith with peyne V.] , `or worchith with an|gwis [Om. VX.] , til ȝit. [verse 23] Forsoth not oonly it, but and we vs [oure GMPQ.] silf, hauynge the firste fruytis of the spirit, and we vs [oure GMPQ.] silf sorwen with ynne vs the [for the V.] adopcioun [deliueryng tytil O.] of Goddis sones, `that is, with greet mornynge desyren [we desiren NQ. desyringe O.] the staat of Goddis sones bi grace [gloss om. in VX.] , abidinge the `aȝen bygging [aȝeinbiyinge GMVXY.] of oure body. [verse 24] Sothli by hope we ben mad saaf. Forsoth the hope that is seyn, is not hope; forwhy what hopith a man that thing, that he seeth? [verse 25] Forsoth [For V.] if we hopen that thing that we seen not, we abiden by pacience. [verse 26] Also and the spirit helpith oure infirmyte, `or vnstedefastnesse [Om. OQX. or vnstablenesse SWY.] ; forwhy what we schulen preie, as it bihoueth, we witen not, but `the ilke [that X.] spirit axith for vs [us, that is, makith us to axe V.] with sorowyngis, that mown not ben toold out. [verse 27] Forsothe he that sekith [scheergith N.] the hertis, wot what the spirit desyrith, for aftir God, `that is, at [after Q.] Goddis wille [gloss om. in X.] , he [Om. K.] axith for hooly men. [verse 28] Forsoth we witen, for [that V.] to men louynge God alle thingis [Om. V.] worchen to gi|dere into good thing [Om. X.] , to hem that aftir purpos ben clepid seyntis [spirites Q.] . [verse 29] Forwhy and whom he wiste bifore, `and he ordeynede [and he byfore ordeyned AMNOPQSVWXY. ordeynede G.] `by grace [Om. X.] for [Om. S.] to be maad lychi [liche GMOPSX. lyik V.] of [Om. V.] the ymage of his sone, that he be the firste bi|getun [geten X.] in many britheren. [verse 30] Sothely [Om. K.] whom [whiche V.] he bifore ordeynede to blisse, and hem he clepide; and whom [whiche V.] he clepide, and hem he iustifiede; sothli whom [whiche V.] he iustifiede, and hem he glorifiede. [verse 31] What therfore schulen we seye to thes thingis? If God for [he for GOQ.] vs, who aȝens [is aȝens OQ.] vs? G pr. m.] the which preieth for vs. [verse 35] Who therfore schal de|parte `vs from [fro VS O.] the charite of God [Crist V.] ? tri|bulacioun, or angwisch, or hungur, or nakidnesse, or persecucioun, or [Om. W.] perel, or swerd? [verse 36] As it is writun, For we ben slayn al day for thee; we ben gessid as [of W.] shceep to [of AGMNOPQSVWXY.] slauȝtir. [verse 37] But in [Om. W.] alle thes thingis we ouercomen, for him that louede vs. [verse 38] Sothli I am certeyn, for [that OV.] nether deeth, nether lyf, nether angels, nether pryncipatis, nether virtutes [vertues AGOQSVWX.] , `nether potestatis [Om. V.] , nether pre|sent thingis, nether thingis to comynge [come NX.] , [verse 39] nether strengthe, nether hiȝthe, nether depnesse, nether othir creature schal [Om. V.] may [mowe AGMNOPQ. moun SX.] departe vs fro the charite of God, that is in `Jhesu Crist [Crist Jesu GMQVX.] oure Lord.
