[verse 11] Jhesu seith [said AGMNPQSVWXY.] to hir, Nether I schal dampne thee; go thou, and now [Om. N.] aftirward nyle thou `do synne [synne GNQTXY.] . [verse 12] Therfore eft Jhesu spak to hem, seyinge, I am the [Om. QXY.] liȝt of the world; he that sueth me, walkith [wandrith T.] not in derknessis, but [but he MQWY.] schal haue the [Om. X.] liȝt of lyf. [verse 13] Therfore the Pharisees seiden, Thou berist witness|ing of thi silf; thi witnessing is not trewe. [verse 14] Jhesu answeride, and seide to hem, And if I bere witnessing of my silf, my witnessing is trewe; for I woot fro [of QV.] whennis I cam, and whidur I go. [verse 15] For|sothe ȝe witen not fro [of Q.] whennus I come, or [ne Q.] whidur I go. Forsoth ȝe demen vp [aftir GMNPQSTWXY.] [verse 16] the fleisch, I [forsothe I W pr. m.] deme not ony man; and if I deme, my dom is trewe, for I am not aloone, but I and the fadir that sente me. [verse 17] And in ȝoure lawe it is writun, for the witnessing of twei [two MX.] men is trewe [truthe N.] . [verse 18] I am, that bere witnessing of my silf, and the fadir that sente me, berith witnessing of me. [verse 19] Therfore thei seiden to him, Wher is thi fadir? Jhesu answeride, Nether ȝe witen, `or knowen [Om. X.] , me, nether ȝe witen my fadir; if ȝe wisten me, perauenture and ȝe schulden wite my fader. [verse 20] Jhesu spak thes wordis [Om. K.] in the treserie, techinge in the temple; and no man took him, for his our cam not ȝit. [verse 21] Therfore eft Jhesu seide to hem, Lo! I go, and ȝe schulen seche me, and ȝe schulen deye in ȝoure synne; whidur I go, ȝe mown not come. [verse 22] Therfore the Jewis seiden, Wher [Whether WX.] he schal [verse 23] sle him silf, for he seith, Whidur I go, ȝe mown not come? And he seide to hem, Ȝe ben of bynethe, I am of aboue; ȝe ben

of this world, I am not of this world. [verse 24] Therfore I seide to ȝou, For ȝe schulen dye in ȝoure synnes; forsothe if ȝe schu|len not bileue for I am, ȝe schulen deye in ȝoure synne [synnes AGMPQSTXY.] . [verse 25] Therfore thei seiden to him, Who art thou? Jhesu seide to hem, The bigynnyng, `or the firste of al thing [or first of al thing Q. Om. X.] , which [the which A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] and [and I T.] speke to ȝou. [verse 26] I haue many thingis for [Om. SX.] to speke, and deme [to deeme G sec. m. MPW.] of ȝou, but he that sente me is sothfast; and I speke in the world thes thingis, that I herde of him. [verse 27] And thei knewen not, for he seide his fadir God. [verse 28] Therfore Jhesu seith to hem, Whanne `ȝe han [he hadde K.] reysid [areisid A pr m. GNQWY.] mannis sone, thanne ȝe schulen knowe, for I am, and of my silf I [Om. N.] do no thing; but [for T.] as my fadir tauȝte me, I speke thes thingis. [verse 29] And he that sente me is with me, and lefte `not me [me not MXY.] aloone; for I do euere [euermore AGMNPQSTWXY.] tho thingis, that ben plesaunt to him. [verse 30] Him spekinge thes thingis, many men [Om. A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] bileueden in to him. [verse 31] Therfore Jhesu seide to the [hem, the MWY.] Jewis, that bileueden in to him, If ȝe schulen dwelle in my word, verili ȝe schulen be my disciplis; [verse 32] and ȝe schulen knowe the treuthe, and the treuthe schal delyuere ȝou. [verse 33] Therfore the Jewis answeriden to him, We ben the seed of Abraham, and to no man we `seruyden euere [euere serueden MXY.] ; hou seist thou, Ȝe [For ȝe A pr. m. GMNPQSTVWXY.] schu|len be free? [verse 34] Jhesu answeride to hem, Treuli, treuli, I seie to ȝou, for ech man that doth synne, is the [Om. W pr. m.] seruaunt of synne. [verse 35] Sothli the seruaunt dwellith not in the hous, into withouten ende, the sone dwellith into withouten ende. [verse 36] Therfor if the sone schal delyuere ȝou, verili ȝe schulen be free. [verse 37] I woot for ȝe ben Abra|hams sones, but ȝe seken for [Om. SX.] to sle me, for my word takith not in ȝou. [verse 38] And I speke tho thingis, that I syȝ at my fadir; and ȝe don tho thingis, that ȝe syȝen at ȝoure fadir. [verse 39] Thei answeriden, and seiden

to him, Abraham is oure fadir. Jhesu seith to hem, If ȝe ben the sones of Abra|ham, `do ȝe [doth X.] the werkis of Abraham. [verse 40] Sothli now ȝe seken to [for to A pr. m. GMNPQTWY.] sle me, a man that haue spoken to ȝou treuthe [the treuthe K pr. m. M. that T.] , that I herde of God; Abraham dide not this thing. [verse 41] Ȝe don the workis of ȝoure fadir. And so thei seiden to him, We ben not born of fornycacioun; we han o fadir, God. [verse 42] Therfore Jhesu seide to hem, If God were ȝoure fadir, sothli ȝe schulden loue me; forsothe I `procedide, or cam forth [procedide, or wente forthe G sup. ras. procedede X.] , of God, and cam; nether sothli I cam of my silf, but he sente me. [verse 43] Whi knowen ȝe not my speche? for ȝe mown not heere my word. [verse 44] Ȝe ben of the fadir, the deuel, and ȝe wolen do the desyris of ȝoure fadir. He was a mansleere fro the bigynnyng, and in treuthe he stood not; for treuthe is not in him. Whanne he spekith a [Om. GMPQSWXY.] lesinge, he spekith of his owne thingis; for he is a lyiere [lyere, or lesynge mongere GTY.] , and fadir of it. [verse 45] Sotheli for [if A pr. m. GMNPQST WXY.] I seye treuthe, ȝe bileuen not to me. [verse 46] Who of ȝou schal reproue me of synne? if I seie treuthe, whi bileuen ȝe not to me? [verse 47] He that is of God, heerith the wordis of God; therfore ȝe heeren not, for ȝe ben not of God. [verse 48] Therfore the Jewis answeriden, and seiden [seiden to him N.] , Wher [Whether X.] we seyn not wel, for thou art a Samaritan, and hast a deuel? [verse 49] Jhesu answeride, and seide, I haue not a deuel, but I honoure my fadir, and ȝe han vnhonourid me. [verse 50] Forsothe I seke not my glorie; ther is, that `sekith, and demeth [seche and deme X.] . [verse 51] Treuli, treuli, I seie to ȝou, if ony man schal kepe my word, he schal not `se, or taaste [see GMQSWY. taaste P. seen X.] , deeth in to with outen ende. [verse 52] Therfor the Jewis seiden, Now we han knowen, for thou hast a deuel. Abraham is deed, and the prophetis, and thou seist, If ony man schal [Om. AG pr. m. NQSTXY.] kepe my word, he schal not taaste deeth in to with outen ende. [verse 53] Wher [Whether WX.] thou ert more than oure fadir Abraham, that is deed, and the prophetis ben deede;

whom makist thou thi silf? [verse 54] Jhesu an|sweride, If I glorifie my silf, my glorie is noȝt; my fadir is, that glorifieth me, whom ȝe seyn, for he is ȝoure God. [verse 55] And ȝe han not knowen him, forsoth I haue knowe him; and if I schal [Om. G pr. m.] seye for [Om. X.] I `woot not him [not hym not X.] , I shal be a lyere lyk to ȝou; but I woot him, and I kepe his word. [verse 56] Abraham, ȝoure fader, `ful out ioyede [gladide, or ful out ioyede AGMNPSTWY.] , `that he schulde se my day; and he syȝ, and he [Om. AG MNPSWXY.] ioyede. [verse 57] Therfore the Jewis seyden to him, Thou hast not ȝit fifty ȝeer, and hast thou seyn Abraham? [verse 58] Therfore Jhesu seide to hem, Treuli, treuli, I seye to ȝou, bifore that Abraham was maad, I am. [verse 59] Therfore thei token stoones, that thei schulden caste in to him; sothli Jhesu hidde him, and wente out of the temple.
