CAP. XVIII.

[verse 1] Whanne Jhesu hadde seid thes thingis, he wente out with his disciplis ouer the strond of Cedron, where was a ȝerd, `or a gardyn [Om. AGMNPQSTVWXY.] , in to which he entride, and his disciplis. [verse 2] Sothli and Judas, that bitrai|ede him, wiste the place, for ofte Jhesu cam to gidere thidur with his disciplis. [verse 3] Therfore whanne Judas hadde takun a cumpany of kniȝtis, and [Om. Q. and mynistris W pr. m.] of the [Om. MSW.] bischopis and Pharisees mynystris, he cam [cam thidur A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] with lanternis, and brondis, and armys [armeres S.] . [verse 4] And so [Om. V.] Jhesu witinge alle thingis that weren to comynge [come GMNPQSTWXY.] on [vpon GMNPTWY. Om. Q.] him [Om. Q.] , wente forth, and seith to hem, Whom seken ȝe? [verse 5] Thei answeriden to him, Jhesu of Nazareth. Jhesu seith [seide Q.] to hem, I am. Forsoth and Judas that bitrayede hym, stood with hem. [verse 6] Therfore as he seide to hem, I am, thei wenten a bak, and felden doun in to erthe [the erthe MPQTWXY.] . [verse 7] Eft [Eftsone A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] he axide [seide to S.] hem, Whom seken ȝe? Forsoth thei seiden, Jhesu Nazaren [of Nazaren K pr. m. W pr. m. of Nazareth X.] . [verse 8] He answeride to hem, I seide to ȝou, for I am; therfore if ȝe seken me, suffre ȝe thes to [for to MPQTWY.] go a wey. [verse 9] That the word which [the which A pr. m. GMPTWY.] he seide schulde be fillid [fulfild A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] , For I loste not ony of hem, whiche [the which A pr. m. GMNPQSTWY.] thou hast ȝouun to me. [verse 10] Forsothe [Ther|fore A pr. m. GMNPQSTVWXY.] Symount Petre hauynge a swerd, drouȝ it [Om. K.] out, and smot the ser|uaunt of the bischop, and kitte of his litil [Om. W pr. m.]

riȝt eere. Forsothe the [Om. X.] name of [to MQSVW.] the seruaunt was Malkus. [verse 11] Therfore Jhesu seide [seith XY.] to Petre, Sende thou [Om. X.] the swerd in to the schethe; wolt thou not, that I drynke thilke [that X.] cuppe, that my fadir ȝaf to me? [verse 12] Therfore the cumpany of knyȝtis, and the [Om. K.] tribune, and the mynystris of Jewis, [verse 13] token Jhesu, and bounden him, and ledden him `first to Annas [to Annas first K.] ; sothli he was fadir [the fader G sec. m. MPSW.] of Cayphas [Caifasis X.] wyf, that was bischop of that ȝeer. [verse 14] Sothli it was Cayphas, that ȝaf counceil to the Jewis, that it spedith o [a T.] man for [Om. QSW sec. m. X.] to deie for the peple. [verse 15] Ther|fore [Forsothe A pr. m. GMNPQSTVWXY.] Symount Petre suede Jhesu, and another disciple; forsoth thilke [that X.] disciple was knowun to the bischop. And he en|tride yn with Jhesu, in to the halle of the [verse 16] bischop; sothly Petre stood at the dore withoute forth. Therfore the tothir [other SX.] dis|ciple, that was knowun to the bischop, wente out, and seide to the womman kep|inge the dore, and ledde yn Petre. [verse 17] Ther|fore the handmayde [handmaiden AGMNPQSWXY.] , kepere of the dore, seide to Petre, Wher [Whether X.] and thou art of the disciplis of this man? He seide, I am not. [verse 18] Forsoth the seruauntis and mynys|tris [the ministris AGMNPSW sec. m.] stooden at the colis, for it was coold, and thei warmyden hem; sothli and Petre was with hem, stondinge and warmynge him. [verse 19] Therfore the bischop axide Jhesu of his disciplis, and of his teching. [verse 20] Jhesu answeride to him, I haue spokun opynly to the world; I tauȝte euere [euer more A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] in the [Om. M.] syna|goge, and in the [Om. M.] temple, whidur alle the Jewis camen to gidere, and in priuy [preuyte G sec. m. MPSW sec. m.] I spak no thing. [verse 21] What axist thou me? axe [axe ȝe W pr. m.] hem that herden, what I haue spokun to hem; lo! thei witen, what thingis I haue seyd. [verse 22] Whanne he hadde seid thes thingis, oon of the mynystris stondinge nyȝ, ȝaf a boffat to Jhesu, sey|inge, Answerist thou so to the byschop? [verse 23] Jhesu answeride to him, If I haue spokun yuele, bere thou witnessing of yuel; sothli

if wel, whi smytist thou me? [verse 24] And Annas [verse 25] sente him boundun to Cayfas, the [Om. AG pr. m. NTXY.] bischop. Forsothe Symount Petre was stondynge and warmynge him; therfore thei seiden to him, Wher [Whether X.] and thou art his disciple? He denyede, and seyde, I am not. [verse 26] Oon of the bischopis seruauntis, cosyn of hym, whos litel eere Petre kittide [kitte AGMNPQSTWXY.] of, seyde, Wher [Whether X.] I syȝ `not thee [thee not MPY.] in the gardyn [ȝerd AGMNPQSTVWXY.] with hym? [verse 27] Therfore `eft Petre [Petir eftsone A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] denyede, and anoon the koc crew. [verse 28] Therfore thei leden Jhesu to Cayfas, in to the moot halle; sothli it was morwetyde [morewynge GNPQTY. mornyng MSWX.] , and thai entriden not in to the moot halle, that thei schulden not be defoylid, but that thei schulden ete paske. [verse 29] Therfore Pilat wente out with oute forth to hem, and seide, What accusing brynge ȝe aȝens this man? [verse 30] Thei answeriden, and seiden to hym, If this were not [no S.] a mys|doer, we hadden [han N.] not bitakun hym to thee. [verse 31] Therfore Pilat seith to hem, Take ȝe him, and `deme ȝe him [demeth X.] , vp [aftir GMNPQSTWXY.] ȝoure lawe. Therfore thei seyden to him, It is not [verse 32] leefful to vs for [Om. SX.] to slee ony man; that the word of Jhesu schulde be fillid [fulfillid A pr. m. GMNPQSTXY. fullyd W.] , which [the which A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] he seide, signyfiynge bi what deeth he was to deiynge [dye A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] . [verse 33] Therfore eft [eftsone A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] Pilate entride in to the moot halle, and clepide Jhesu, and seide to him, Ert thou king of Jewis? [verse 34] Jhesu answeride, and seide to him, Seist thou this thing of thi silf, ether [or MQ. outher X.] othere seiden to thee of me? [verse 35] Pilat answeride, Wher [Whether X.] I am a Jew? Thi folk and bischopis bytokun thee to me; what hast thou don? [verse 36] Jhesu answeride, My kyng|dom is not of this world; if my kyngdom were of this world, sothly my mynystris schulden stryue, that I schulde not be takun to the Jewis; now forsothe my kyngdom is not of hennis [heuenes Y.] , or of this place [Om. X.] . [verse 37] And so Pilat seide to him, `Ther|fore art thou kyng [a kyng X.] ? Jhesu answeride,

Thou seidist [saist AGMNPQSTVWXY.] , for I am a kyng. To [I in A pr. m. G sec. m. MNPQTXY.] this thing I [Om. A pr. m. G sec. m. MNPQTXY.] am born, and to this I cam in to the world, that I bere witnessing to treuthe. Ech [Ech man MSW.] that is of treuthe, heerith my voys. [verse 38] Pilat seith to him, What is treuthe? And whanne he hadde seid this thing, eft [Eftsoone A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] he wente out to the Jewis, and seide to hem, I fynde no cause in [aȝens A pr. m. NG pr. m. MPQTY. aȝen X.] him. [verse 39] Forsoth it is a [Om. Y.] custom to ȝou, that I de|lyuer [lefe X. leeue, or delyuer AGMNPQSTWY.] oon to ȝou in pask; therfore wolen ȝe `I schal dismytte [that I desmitte T.] to ȝou the kyng of Jewis? [verse 40] Therfore thei cryeden eft [eftsoone A pr. m. GMNPQST WXY.] alle, seyinge, Not this, but Barabas. Forsothe Barabas was a theef.
