CAP. XVII.

[verse 1] `Jhesu spak thes thingis [These th. Jh. sp. MPXY.] , and the yȝen lift [liftid X.] vp in [Om. TY.] to heuene, he seide, Fadir, the our cometh, clarifie thi sone, that thi sone clarifie thee. [verse 2] As thou hast ȝouun to him power of ech fleisch, `or man [Om. X.] , that al thing that thou hast ȝouun to hym, he ȝyue to hem euerlasting lyf. [verse 3] Forsothe [For N.] this is [Om. N.] euerlasting lyf, that thei knowe thee aloone verry God, and whom thou sentist, Jhesu Crist. [verse 4] I haue clarifyed thee on erthe [the erthe A pr. m. OTVY.] , I haue endid the werk, that thou hast ȝouun to me, that I do. [verse 5] And now, fadir, clarifie thou [Om. QSW.] me at thi silf, with clerenesse [cleennesse Q. the cleernesse S.] that I hadde at thee, bifore the world was maad. [verse 6] I haue schewid thi name to the [Om. X.] men, whiche [whom MPXY.] thou hast ȝouun to me of the world; thei weren thine, and thou hast ȝouun hem to me, and thei han kept thi word. [verse 7] And now thei han knowun, for alle thingis that thou hast ȝouun to me, ben of thee. [verse 8] For the wordis that thou hast ȝouun to me, I ȝaf to hem; and thei han takun, and han knowun verili, for I wente out fro thee; and thei bileuyden, for thou sentist me. [verse 9] I preie for hem, not for the world, but for hem, that thou hast ȝouun to me, for thei

ben thine. [verse 10] And alle myne thingis ben thine, and thin thingis ben myne; and I am clarified in hem. [verse 11] And now I am not in the world, and thes ben in the world, and I come to thee. Hooli fadir, kepe hem in thy name, whiche [whom GMNPQTXY.] thou `hast ȝouun [ȝauest GMNPQTW. ȝeue SXY.] to me, that thei be oon, as and we. [verse 12] Whanne I was with hem, I kepte hem in thi name; whiche [whom GMNPQTXY.] thou `hast ȝouun [ȝauest GMNPQTW. ȝeue SXY.] to me, I kepte, and no man of hem perischide, no [Om. QX.] but the sone of perdicioun, or damp|nacioun, that the scripture be fillid [fulfild A pr. m. GMNPSTWXY.] . [verse 13] For|sothe now I come to thee, and `I speke thes thingis [these thingis I speke MPXY.] in the world, that thei haue my ioye fillid [fulfild A pr. m. GMNPQSTWXY.] in hem silf. [verse 14] I ȝaf to hem thi word, and the world hadde hem in hate; for thei ben not of the world, as and [Om. A pr. m. G pr. m.] I am not of the world. [verse 15] I preie not, that thou take a wey [Om. G pr. m. TXY.] hem fro [of G pr. m. MPQTXY.] the world, but that thou kepe hem fro yuel. [verse 16] Thei ben not of the world, as and [Om. G pr. m.] I am not of the world. [verse 17] Halwe thou hem in treuthe; thi word is treuthe. [verse 18] As thou sentist [sendist K.] me in to the world, and I sente hem in to the world. [verse 19] And I halwe my silf for hem, that and thei be halwid in treuthe. [verse 20] Sotheli I preie not oonli for hem, but and for hem that ben to bileuynge [beleue AGMNPQSTWXY.] in to me bi the [verse 21] word of hem; that alle thei [Om. AGMNPQSTWXY.] be oon, as thou, fadir, in me, and I in thee, that and thei in vs be oon; that the world bileue, for [that N.] thou hast sent me. [verse 22] And I haue ȝouun to hem the clerenesse, that thou hast ȝouun to me, that thei be oon, as and [verse 23] we ben oon; I in hem, and thou in me, that thei be endid in [in to AGMNPQSTVWXY.] oon; and that the world knowe, that thou sentist me, and hast louyd hem, as [as and GMPQSW.] thou hast louyd and [Om. GMPQSW.] me. [verse 24] Fadir, I wole that and thei whiche [whom GMNPQTXY.] thou `hast ȝouun [ȝauest A pr. m. GMNPQTWY. ȝeue SX.] to me, be with me where I am, that thei se my cleernesse, that [whiche MPSW.] thou

hast ȝouun to me [in to K.] ; for thou louedist me bifor the makinge of the world. [verse 25] `Riȝtful fadir [Fadir iust, or riȝtful A pr. m. GMNPQSTWY. Fader iust X.] , the world knew `not thee [thee not MPXY.] , for|sothe [for Q.] I knew [knowe T.] thee, and thes knowen [knewen AGMNPSTVW.] , for thou sentist me. [verse 26] And I haue maad thi name knowe to hem, and schal make knowe; that the loue by which thou hast loued me, be in hem, and I in hem.
