[Here bigynneth the Profecie of Ysaye [From E. No initial rubric in the other Mss.] .] CAP. I.

[verse 1] The viseoun of Isaie, sone of Amos, that he saȝ vp on Judam and Jerusalem, in the daȝes of Osie, Joathan, Achaȝ, Esechie, kingus of Juda. [verse 2] Hereth, ȝee heuenus, and with eres parceyue, thou erthe, for the Lord spac. Sonus I nursh|ede out and enhauncede; thei forsothe dispiseden me. [verse 3] The oxe kneȝ his wel|dere, and the asse the [Om. C.] cracche of his lord; Irael forsothe me kneȝ not, and my puple vnderstod [vndirstonde A.] not. [verse 4] Wo to syn|ful [the synful E pr. m.] folc, to the puple heuy with wickid|nesse, to the shreude sed, to the sonus ful of hidous giltes; thei forsoken the Lord, thei blasfemeden [forsoken A.] the hoeli of [Om. E pr. m.] Irael, thei ben aliened awei bacward. [verse 5] `Vp on what thing [Vp the whiche E pr. m.] I shal smyte ȝou [Om. AG pr. m. H.] , ferther|mor addende lawe breche, `or trespassing aȝeyns the lawe [Om. C et E pr. m.] ? Eche `hed ful of lan|gour [languysshinge heued E pr. m.] , and eche `herte ful of mornyng [mornyng herte E pr. m.] . [verse 6] Fro the plante of the foot vnto the top, ther is not in hym [hem AGHK.] helthe; wounde, and wannesse, and siknesse swellende is not bounden aboute, ne curid with leching, ne nurshid with oile. [verse 7] Ȝoure lond is desert, ȝoure cites ben brend vp with fyr; ȝoure regioun [regiouns E pr. m.] deuouren biforn ȝou alienus, and it shal be desolat as in ene|myful wastete [wasted A.] . [verse 8] And the doȝter of Sion shal ben forsaken as a shadewy place in a vyneȝerd [vyne C pr. m. E pr. m.] , and as an [Om. C.] hylet in a place of goordes, and as a cite that is wastid.

[verse 9] But ȝif [Om. C et E pr. m.] the Lord of ostes hadde laft to vs sed, as Sodom wee hadden ben, and as Gomorra lijc wee shulden ben [haue ben K.] . [verse 10] Her|eth the wrd of the Lord, ȝee princes of Sodom; and parceyueth with eres the lawe of ȝoure God, ȝee puple of Gomorre. [verse 11] What to me the multitude of ȝoure slayn sacrifise? seith the Lord. Ful I am; the brent sacrefises of wetheres, and the talȝ of fatte bestus, and the blod of calues, and of lombes, and off goet, I wolde not. [verse 12] Whan ȝee shulden come biforn my siȝte, who soȝte these thingus of ȝoure hondis, that ȝee shulden go in my porches? [verse 13] Ne bringe ȝee to more sacrifises in veyn; encens abhominacioun is to me; the newe moone, and sabot, and othere festus I shal not bern. [verse 14] Wicke [Wickid AEGHK.] ben ȝoure cum|panyes; ȝoure kalendis and ȝoure so|lempnetees hatede my soule; thei ben mad to me greuous, I trauailede suff|rende. [verse 15] And [Om. C.] whan ȝee shul strecche out ȝoure hondis, I shal turne awei myn eȝen fro ȝou; and whan ȝee shul multeplien orisoun, I shal not heren; forsothe ȝoure hondis ben ful of blod. [verse 16] Be ȝee washen, beth clene; taketh awei the euel of ȝoure thoȝtes fro myn eȝen; resteth to do shreudely, lerneth to do wel. [verse 17] Secheth dom, helpeth to the opressid, demeth to the faderles child, defendeth the widewe. [verse 18] And cometh, and vndernemeth mee, seith the Lord. If ȝoure synnes weren as flaume red silc, as snoȝ thei shuln ben mad white; and if thei weren rede as blod red silc, as whit wlle thei shul be. [verse 19] If ȝee wiln, and shuln heren me, the goodis of the erthe ȝee shuln ete. [verse 20] That

if ȝee wiln not, and me to wrathe ȝee shulden terren, swerd shal deuoure ȝou; for the mouth of the Lord spac. [verse 21] What maner is mad a strumpet the feithful cite ful of dom? riȝtwisnesse dwellede in it; now forsothe mansleeres. [verse 22] Thi [ȝoure E pr. m.] syluer is turned in to dros; thi wyn is mengd [meng E pr. m.] with water. [verse 23] Thi princes vn|feithfull, felawes of theues; alle thei loouen ȝiftus, folewen ȝeldyngus; to the faderles child thei demen not, the cause of the widewe goth not in to them. [verse 24] For that, seith the Lord God of ostes, strong of Irael, Allas! I shal be coumfortid vp on my straunge enemys, and I shal be vengid vp on myn enemys, that shulden be frendis. [verse 25] And I shal turne myn hond to thee, and I shal sethen [sechen CE.] out to the pure thi [the E pr. m.] dros, and I shal taken awei al thi tyn. [verse 26] And I shal restoren thi domes|men, as they weren biforn, and thi coun|seileris, as bi old tyme. Aftir these thingus thou shalt ben clepid the cite of the riȝtwis, the cheef citee of the feith|ful. [verse 27] Syon in dom shal ben aȝee [aȝen A et alii.] boȝt, and thei shul bringe it aȝeen in to riȝt|wisnesse; [verse 28] and he shal to-trede the hyd|ous gilteres and the synneres togidere, and thatt forsoken the Lord, shul ben di|stroȝid. [verse 29] Thei shul ben confoundid for|sothe of the maumetes, to the whiche thei sacrifieden; and ȝee shuln ben shamed [ashamed AEGHK.] vp on the gardynes, that ȝee hadden chosen. [verse 30] Whan ȝee shul ben as an oek, the leues fallende doun, and as a gardyn with oute water. [verse 31] And ȝoure strengthe shal ben as a [Om. K.] `deed sparke [gnast C pr. m. E pr. m.] of a flax top, and ȝoure werk as a sparcle; and eithir shal be brend vp togidere, and ther shal not ben that quenche.
