sey thou, I synnede, and what to me falleth sorewy [sorew A sec. m. EG.] ? Forsothe the heiȝeste is a pacient ȝeldere. [verse 5] Of the forȝyuenesse of synnes, wile thou not [Om. A.] be withoute drede, ne ley thou to synne vp on synne. [verse 6] And sey thou not, The merci of God is gret; of the multitude of my synnes he shal han mercy. [verse 7] Mercy forsothe and wrathe fro hym soone neȝheth, and in to synneres beholdeth the wrathe of hym. [verse 8] Ne tarie thou to be conuertid to the Lord, and ne putte [bere E pr. m.] thou it of fro dai in to day. [verse 9] Sodeynli forsothe shal come the wrathe of hym, and in time of veniaunce he shal distroȝe thee. [verse 10] Wile thou not ben anguysht in vnriȝt richesses; forsothe thei shul not profiten in the dai of deth and of veniaunces. [verse 11] Ne throwe thou [Om. A.] thee out in to eche wynd, and go thou not in to eche wei; so forsothe a synnere is proued in double tunge. [verse 12] Be thou stede|fast in the weie of the Lord, and in the [Om. C pr. m.] treuthe of thi wit and kunnyng; and parfitli folewe thee the wrd of pes and of riȝtwisnesse. [verse 13] Be thou debonere to here [Om C pr. m.] the wrd of God, that thou vnder|stonde, and with wysdam thou schalt [Om. C pr. m.] bringe forth `a soth [Om. AGH.] answere. [verse 14] If ther is to thee vnderstonding, answere to thi neȝhebore; elles forsothe thin hond be vp on thi mouth, lest thou be take in an vndisciplined wrd, and thou be con|foundid. [verse 15] Wrshipe and glorie in the wrd of the weel felende; the tunge forsothe of the vnprudent is the turnyng vp so doun of hym. [verse 16] Be thou not clepid a twisil tunge [tungid A.] , `or a priue bacbiter [Om. C et E pr. m.] , in thi lif, and be thou not take in thi tunge, and confoundid. [verse 17] Forsothe vp on a theef is confusioun, and peyne taking, and werst repref vp on the twisel tunge. To the priue grucchere forsothe [Om. A.] hate, and enemyte, and strif. [verse 18] Iustefie thou lic maner the [to A.] litle and the [to A.] grete.
