[verse 1] Gret ocupacioun is shape to alle men, and a greuous ȝoc vp on the sonus of Adam, fro the day of the goyng out fro the wombe of the moder of hem, vn to the day of the biriyng in to the moder of alle thingus. [verse 2] The thoȝtis of hem, and the dredes of herte, the fyndyngus of abidyng, and the daȝes [day A.] of endynge [the berende C pr. m. the beringe E pr. m.] ; [verse 3] fro [offis of CE pr. m.] the cheef sittere [iuge E pr. m.] `vp on [vp H.] the glo|rious sete, vn to the meekid vn to the [Om. AE sec. m.] [verse 4] erthe and asken [asshen A.] ; fro hym that vseth blu silc, and berth the [Om. AEGH.] croune, vn to hym that is couered [crownyd E pr. m.] with raw lynen, wodnesse, enuye, noyse, wagering, and dred of deth, wrathefulnesse stedefastly [verse 5] bidende, and striuyng; and in tyme of repast in the bed, slep of nyȝt chaungeth his kunnyng. [verse 6] Litil forsothe as noȝt in reste; and of hym in slepes as in the day respit. [verse 7] He ys disturbid in the siȝte of his herte, as he that is scapid in the dai of bataile. In the tyme of his helthe he ros out, and wndrende at no drede, [verse 8] with alle flesh, fro man vn to beste, and vp on the synneres seuenfold. [verse 9] To these thingus, deth [Om. C pr. m.] , blod, strif, and two bit|ende swerd, opressiouns [oppressioun AGH.] , hungres, and to|treding, [verse 10] and scourges; vp on wickid men ben formed alle these thingus, and for hem was mad the ieneral flod. [verse 11] Alle thingus forsothe that of the erthe ben, in to erthe [the erthe AGH.] shul ben turned; and alle wa|tris in to the se shuln be turned. [verse 14] As the riȝtwis man in openyng his hondis shal gladen; so the lawe brekeres in the ende shuln wanen [wanyen EGH.] awey. [verse 15] The sonus sonus of vnpit|ous men shul nott multeplie braunches; and vnclene rootes vp on the cop of the ston sounen. [verse 16] Vp on eche water grene|nesse; and at the hour of the flod biforn al the hey [heiȝ E pr. m.] it shal be pullid vp. [verse 17] Grace as paradis in blissingus; and mercy in to the world abit [abideth AEGH.] stille. [verse 18] The lif of the suf|fisaunt werkere to hymself shal be mad swete; and in it thou shalt fynde tresor. [verse 19] The bilding vp of the cite shal confermen the name; and ouer this an vndefoulid womman shal be countid. [verse 20] Wyn and melodye gladen the herte; and ouer either the loouyng of wisdam. [verse 21] Trumpes and sautre maken swete melody; and ouer eithir the swete tunge. [verse 22] Grace and fairnesse [hope E.] the eȝe shal desyren; and ouer these grene tilthis. [verse 23] A frend and a mete felawe in tyme comende [of cummynge AGH] togidere; and ouer either a womman with a man. [verse 24] Brethern in to help in tyme of tribula|cioun; and ouer them mercy shal dely|ueren. [verse 25] Gold and siluer, and setting of feet; and ouer either [these E pr. m.] counseil wel plesid. [verse 26] Facultes and vertues enhauncen the herte; and ouer these the drede of the Lord. [verse 27] Ther is not in the drede of the Lord lassing; and ther is not in it to seche helpe. [verse 28] The drede of the Lord as paradis of blessing; and ouer alle glorie thei couereden it. [verse 29] Sone, in the tyme of thi lif ne nede thou; betere is to dyen, than to neden. [verse 30] A man bihold|ende in to an other mannes bord, the lif of hym is nott in the thenking of liflode; forsothe he nursheth his lif with other mennus metes. and taȝt, shal kepe hymself. [verse 32] In the mouth of the vnprudent shal be maad [to-troden C pr. m. E pr. m.] myseise [sweet myseise E sec. m. GH.] ; and in the wombe of hym fyr shal brenne.
