CAP. XXX.

[verse 1] Who looueth his sone, bisily ȝeueth to hym scourgis, that he glade in his laste, and that he grope not the dores of neȝhe|bores.

[verse 2] Who techeth his sone, shal be preisid in hym; and in the myddel of homli men in hym he shal glorien. [verse 3] Who techeth his sone, in to enuye sendith [putteth C pr. m. E pr. m.] the enemy; and in the myddel of frendus he shal glorien in hym. [verse 4] Dead is the fader of hym, and he is as not dead; lic forsothe to hym he hath laft aftir hym. [verse 5] In his lif he saȝ, and gladide in hym; and in his deth he sorewede not, ne `is confoundid [knoulechede C pr. m. E pr. m.] bifor the enemys. [verse 6] Forsothe he hath laft the defendere of the hous aȝen the enemys; and to frendus the ȝeld|ing of [Om. AEGH.] grace. [verse 7] For the soulis of the sonus he shal binde togidere his woundis; and ouer al vois shul be disturbid the boweles of hym. [verse 8] The vntame hors shal scapen hard, and the slowe sone shal scape stumbling doun. [verse 9] Flatere the sone, and he shal make thee dredende; pley with hym, and he shall sorewen [make thee dreri G sec. m.] thee. [verse 10] Ne with laȝhe thou to hym, ne with sorewe, and in the laste thi teth shal waxe stoneyd. [verse 11] Ȝyue thou not to hym power in ȝouthe, and ne dispise thou the thoȝtus of hym. [verse 12] Crooke the nol of hym in ȝouthe, and bet the sidis of hym, whil he is a faunt; lest parauenture he in|wardly hardne, and leeue not to thee, and he shal be to thee sorewe of soule. [verse 13] Tech thi sone, and werk in hym; lest in to the filthehed of hym thou gilte. [verse 14] Betere is a pore man hool, and strong in strengthis, than a riche man feble, and scourgid with malice. [verse 15] Helthe of soule in hoelynesse of riȝtwisnesse, and betere is than alle gold and siluer; and a strong body than monee withoute me|sure. [verse 16] Ther is not monee ouer the mo|nee of the helthe of body; and ther is not liking ouer the ioȝe of herte. [verse 17] Betere is deth than bittere lyf, and euere last|ende reste than durende sicknesse. [verse 18] Goodis hid in a mouth closid, as leiyngis [leiynge A.] to of plenteuous metes, set aboute with [to G sec. m.] a se|pulcre

[sepulture G.] . [verse 19] What shal profiten sacrifise to the maumet? and [Om. A.] forsothe he shal not eten, ne sauouren [ben honourid E pr. m.] . [verse 20] So he that is dryuen awei fro the Lord, and berende meedis [verse 21] of shreudenesse, seende with eȝen and weilende, so a geldyng clippende a maiden, and siȝhende. [verse 22] Sorewi idilnesse ȝyue thou not to thi soule, ne tormente thou thiself in thi counseil. [verse 23] Myrthe of herte, that is the lif of man, and tresor withoute failing of hoelynesse; and ful out ioȝing of a man ys long lyuyng. [verse 24] Haue mercy to thi soule, plesende to God; and withhold and gedere togidere thin herte in the holynesse of hym, and sorewi idilnesse fer put awei fro thee. [verse 25] Manye forsothe sorewy idilnesse sleth; and ther is not profit [helthe E pr. m.] in it. [verse 26] Enuye and wrathe shuln lassen daȝes; and bifor tyme thenking shal bringe to elde. [verse 27] A briȝt herte good in meteshipes; the meteshipis forsothe of hym diligentli ben made.
