CAP. XXVIII.

[verse 1] Who wile taken veniaunce, of the Lord shal finde veniaunce; and the synnes of hym kepende he shal kepe. [verse 2] Forȝif to thi neȝhebore noȝende to thee, and thanne to thee lowli preȝende synnes shul ben forȝoue. [verse 3] A man to a man kep|ith wrathe; and of God he sechith lech|ing [medicyne E pr. m.] . [verse 4] In to a man lic to hymself he hath not mercy; and of his synnes he shal preȝen. [verse 5] He whil he is flesh, reserueth ire, and mercy asketh of God; who shal preȝe for the giltis of hym? [verse 6] Haue mynde

of thi laste thingus, and lef to ben [thyn E pr. m.] ene|my. [verse 7] Rotenese [Blisfulnesse C pr. m. E pr. m.] forsothe and deth stonden on in the hestes `of hym [Om. C sec. m. E sec. m.] . [verse 8] Remembre the drede of the Lord, and thou shalt not wrathe to the neȝhebore. [verse 9] Remembre the testament of the heȝest, and dispise the ignoraunce of thi neȝhebore. [verse 10] Abstene thee fro strif, and thou shalt lassen synnes. [verse 11] A man forsothe wratheful teend|ith strif; and a man synnere shal dis|turbe frendis, and in the myddel of men hauende pes he sendith in enemyte. [verse 12] Af|tir forsothe the trees of the wode, so the fier brenneth [shal brennen E pr. m.] ; and aftir the vertue of a man, so the wrathe of hym shal be, and aftir his substaunce he shal enhaunce his wrathe. [verse 13] An hastid strif shal teende fyr, and hastende chidyng [C. super ras. strijf E pr. m.] shal sheden out blod; and a tunge witnessende shal bringe to deth. [verse 14] If it shul blowen, as fyr it shal brenne; and if thou shul spitten vpon it [Om. A.] , it shal ben queynt; either fro the mouth gon forth. [verse 15] The whistrende gruc|chere, and the twisil tunge cursid; for|sothe manye hauende pes disturbide [he disturbide E pr. m.] . [verse 16] The thridde tunge manye men stirede, and scaterede them fro folc in to folc. [verse 17] Wallid cites of riche men it stroȝede [distruyede AEGH.] , and the housis of grete men it mynede out. [verse 18] The vertues of puples it to-heewȝ [hewȝ doun G sec. m.] , and stronge folkys of kinde it vnknytte. [verse 19] The thridde tunge stronge, `or weddid [Om. C et E pr. m.] , wym|men caste out, and shal bynyme them ther trauailes. [verse 20] Who biholdith it, shal not han reste; ne shal han a frend, in which he rest. [verse 21] The wounde of a scourge maketh wannesse; the wounde forsothe of a tunge shal to-broosen boenes. [verse 22] Manye fellen in the mouth of swerd; but not as thei dieden by [for C pr. m. E pr. m.] ther tunge. [verse 23] Blisful

that is couered fro a shreude tunge; `the which [that C pr. m.] in the wrathe of it passide not, and `the which [that C pr. m.] droȝ not at the ȝoc of it, and in the bondis of `it is [Om. A.] not bounde. [verse 24] The ȝoc forsothe of it is an irene ȝoc, and the bond of it is a brasene bond. [verse 25] The deth of it the werste [wickedest AEGH.] deth; and profitable helle more than it. [verse 26] The stede|fastnesse of it shal not abide stille, but shal holde the weies of vnriȝtwis men; in his flaume he shal not brenne riȝtwis men. [verse 27] Thei that forsaken God, shul falle in to it; and it shal brenne out in them, and it shal not be queynt; and it shal be sent in to them as a leoun, and as a parde it shal hurte them. [verse 28] Hegge thin eres with thornes, and wile thou not heren the shreude tunge; and to thi mouth mac thou dores, and [and soowe thou E pr. m.] lokes to thin eres. [verse 29] Thi gold and thi seluer melt to|gidere; and to thi wrdis mac thou a balaunce, and riȝt bridelis to thi mouth. [verse 30] And tac heed, lest parauenture thou slyde in the tunge, and thou falle in the siȝte of the [Om. C pr. m.] enemys, waitende to thee, and thi fallyng be vnheleable in to the [Om. AGH.] deth.
