[verse 1] Whan forsothe Tobie made abidingus [abidyng A.] bi enchesoun of the bridalis, his fadir Tobie was stirid, seiende, Wenest thou, whi my sone abit [abideth A.] , and whi he is with|holden there? [verse 2] Wenest thou, lest Gabel be dead, and no man ȝelde to hym the monei? [verse 3] Forsothe he began to be sori, and Anna, his wif, with hym; and thei begunne bothe togidyr [Om. C pr. m.] to wepe, for thi that the [at the AFH.] sett dai ther sone was not turned aȝeen to hem. [verse 4] Thanne wepte his modir with vnremediable teris, and seide, Allas me! my sone, wherto sente wee thee to pilgrimagen, the liȝt of oure eȝen, the [Om. AH.] staf of oure eelde, solace of oure lif, hope of oure after bringing forth of childer? [verse 5] Alle thingis togidere in thee oon hauende, wee shulden not lete thee gon fro vs. [verse 6] To whom seide Tobie, Be stille, and wile thou not be disturbid; hol is oure sone; feithful inow [ynowȝ AEF. and trewe H.] is that man, with the whiche wee senten hym. [verse 7] She forsothe no wise myȝte take coumfort, but eche dai stertende out, beheeld aboute, and wente aboute alle the weies, bi the [Om.
