[verse 1] Roboam forsothe came into Jerusalem, and clepide al the hous of Juda and of Beniamyn, vnto an hundrith and eiȝty thousand of chosen fiȝtynge men, that he fiȝte aȝeynus Ysrael, and turne to hym his rewme. [verse 2] And the word of the Lord is maad to [Om. B.] Semyam, the man of God, sey|inge, [verse 3] Speke to Roboam, the sone of Sala|mon,

kyng of Juda, and to al Yrael, that [verse 4] is in Juda and Beniamyn; Thes thingis seith the Lord, Ȝe schul not steyȝen up, ne fiȝten aȝeyn ȝoure bretheren; turne aȝein ech oon [Om. C.] in to his hous, for this is doon by my wille. The whiche whan hadden herd the word of the Lord, ben torned aȝein, ne thei wenten aȝeinus kyng Jeroboam. [verse 5] Roboam forsothe dwellide in Jerusalem, and he bilde up wallid cytees [verse 6] in Juda; and he maad out Bethleem, and [verse 7] Ethan, and Thecue, and Bethsur; also [verse 8] and Sochot, and Odollam; also and Jeth, [verse 9] and Mareza, and Ciph; but and Huram, [verse 10] and Lachis, and Arecha; Saraa also, and Haylon, and Ebron, that weren in Juda and Beniamyn, cytees most strengthed. [verse 11] And whanne he hadde closed hem with wallis, he putte in hem princes of metis, and bernes, that is, of oyle and of wijne. [verse 12] Bot and to alle the cytees he maad ar|mour places of scheeldis, and of speris, and he fastnede hem with most diligence, and comaundide vpon Judam, and vpon Benjamin. [verse 13] The prestis forsothe and Le|uytis, that weren in al Ysrael, camen to [verse 14] hym fro al their seetis, forsakyng sub|urbis and their possessiouns, and goynge ouer to Juda and to [Om. ACEF. in H.] Jerusalem; forthi that Jeroboam hadde cast hem awey, and his aftir comers, that thei vsen not the [verse 15] presthood of the Lord; the whiche or|deynede to hym silf prestis of heeȝe thingis, and of deuyls, and of calues, `the whiche [that C pr. m.] he hadde made. [verse 16] Bot and of al the lynagis of Yrael, whiche euer hadde ȝeuen their herte that thei sechen the Lord God of Yrael, came to Jerusalem to offryn their slayn sacrificis before the Lord God of their faders. [verse 17] And thei strengtheden the kyngdam of Juda, and to gither strengtheden Roboam, the sone of Salamon bi thre ȝeer; forsothe thei wenten in the weies of Dauid, and of

Salomon, al oonly thre ȝeer. [verse 18] Forsothe Roboam weddide a wijf Malaoth, the douȝter of Jerymuth, sone of Dauid, and Abiail, the douȝter of Heliab, sone of [verse 19] Ysaye; the whiche bare to hym sonis, Jeus, and Somoriam, and Jereum. [verse 20] And aftir this he toke Maacham, the douȝtir of Absalon, that bare to hym Abia, and Thai, and Sisa, and Salomyth. [verse 21] Forsothe Roboam louede Maacham, the douȝter of Absalon, ouer alle his wijues and secun|daries. Forsothe eiȝtene wijues he wed|dide, secundarie wijues forsothe sixty; and he gate eiȝte and twenty sonis, and sixty douȝters. [verse 22] Forsothe he sette in the heued Abiam, the sone of Maacha, duke ouer alle his bretheren; he thouȝte for|sothe [verse 23] to makyn hym kyng, for wijser and myȝtyer ouer alle his sonis, and in alle the coostis of Juda and of Beniamyn, and in alle the walled cytees; and he ȝaue to hem many metis, and he hadde many wijues.
