[verse 1] THE eldere man, to the chosun ladi, and to her children, whiche Y loue in treuthe; and not Y aloone, but also alle [verse 2] men that knowen treuthe; for the treuthe that dwellith in ȝou, and with ȝou schal be with outen ende. [verse 3] Grace be with ȝou, merci, and pees of God the fadir, and of Jhesu Crist, the sone of the fadir, in treuthe and charite [in charite a.] . [verse 4] I ioiede ful myche, for Y foond of [Om. k pr. m.] thi sones goynge in treuthe, as we resseyueden maundement of the fadir. [verse 5] And now Y preye thee, ladi, not as writinge a newe maundement to thee, but that that we hadden fro the bigynnyng, that we loue ech other. [verse 6] And this is charite, that we walke after his maundementis [comaundementis Rgk.] . For this is the com|aundement, that as ȝe herden at the bi|gynnyng, walke ȝe in hym. [verse 7] For many disseyueris wenten out in to the world, which knoulechen [knoulechiden ghk.] not that Jhesu Crist hath come in fleisch; this is a dis|seyuere and antecrist. [verse 8] Se ȝe [Om. hath bothe the sone and the fadir. [verse 10] If [And if b.] ony man cometh to ȝou, and bryngith not this teching, nyle ȝe resseyue hym in to hous [the hous I. ȝoure hous h sec. m. k.] , nether seie ȝe [Om. EK pr. m. gkα] to hym, Heil. [verse 11] For he that seith to hym, Heil, comy|neth with hise yuel werkis. Lo! Y biforseide to ȝou, that ȝe be not con|foundid in the dai of oure Lord Jhesu Crist. [verse 12] Y haue mo thingis to write to ȝou, and Y wolde not bi parchemyn [ether book K marg.] and enke; for Y hope that Y schal come to ȝou, and speke mouth to mouth, that ȝour [oure g.] ioye be ful.
