[verse 1] Therfor Y, an euene eldre man, and a witnesse of Cristis passiouns, which also

am a comynere of that glorie, that schal be schewid in tyme to [of E.] comynge [come k.] ; byseche [verse 2] ȝe [Om. A sec. m. K sec. m. k sec. m.] the [Om. E.] eldre men, that ben among ȝou, fede ȝe the flok of God, that is among ȝou, and puruey ȝe, not as constreyned, but wilfulli, bi God; not [and not X.] for loue of foule [verse 3] wynnyng, but wilfulli, nether as hauynge lordschip in the clergie, but that ȝe ben maad ensaumple of [to k.] the floc [folk E.] , of wille [wille, eithir of soule C. wille of soule EKMQRUXabcegk pr. m. oα.] . [verse 4] And whanne the prince of scheepherdis schal appere, ȝe schulen resseyue the co|roun of glorie, that may neuere fade. [verse 5] Also, ȝe ȝonge men, be ȝe suget to eldre men, and alle schewe ȝe togidere meke|nesse; for the Lord withstondith [aȝenstondith b.] proude men, but he ȝyueth grace to meke men. [verse 6] Therfor be ȝe mekid vndir the myȝti hoond of God, that he reise ȝou in the [verse 7] tyme of visitacioun, and caste ȝe al ȝoure bisynesse [al ȝoure besy|nesse, etc.; not that thei leue out to do that that is in hem, forwhi this were to tempte God, but that thei triste sadly to gete al good bi the vertu of God. deuoure; in makinge him a membre of his cursid con|gregacioun bi deedly synne. Ve. stronge in feith; foormed with charite, which is suffi|cient armure to aȝenstonde hym. the same passioun; that is, assailing and tempting of the deuel. to thilke britherhed of ȝou, etc.; that is, to ȝoure bri|theren scaterid thoruȝ the world, as if he seie, aȝenstonde ȝee the deuel, as also ȝoure britheren don. biseechinge; that is, monest|inge with meek preiers. V. in Babiloyne; that is, Rome, as Jerom seith, for as Babiloyne was the grettest citee, and ȝouen to ydolatrie, so was Rome aftir|ward in hir tyme. my sone; that is, my goostly sone in baptym and teching. Lire here. ve.] in to hym, for to hym is cure of ȝou. [verse 8] Be ȝe sobre, and wake ȝe [Om. X pr. m.] , for ȝoure aduersarie, the deuel, as a rorynge lioun goith aboute, sechinge whom he schal deuoure. [verse 9] Whom aȝenstonde [aȝenstondith g.] ȝe, stronge in the feith, witynge that the same passioun is maad to thilke brithir|hode of ȝou, that is in the world. [verse 10] And God of al grace, that clepide ȝou in to his euerlastinge glorie, ȝou suffrynge a litil, he schal performe, and schal con|ferme, and schal make sad [saaf gh.] . [verse 11] To hym be glorie and lordschip, in to worldis of worldis. [verse 12] Amen. Bi Siluan, feithful brother to ȝou as Y deme, Y wroot schortli; bisechinge, and witnessinge that this is the very grace of God, in which ȝe stonden.
