Thei seien and do not; forwhi to teche wel and to lyue yuele is noon other thing than to dampne himself bi his owne vois. til in to the day; of ascencioun. in which he comaundede bi the Hooly Gost to apostlis; that thei schul|den preche the gospel thourȝ al the world, in 16 c<sup>o</sup>. of Marc. whiche he chees; bifore othere men, to the office of apostelhed. was taken up; fro erthe to he|uen, in his man|hed; for bi the Godhed which is nedliche euery where, it acordith not to him to go fro place to place. Lire here. ve.] , in to the daie of his ascen|cioun, in [and Eg.] which he comaundide bi the Hooli Goost to hise apostlis, whiche [whom I.] he [verse 3] hadde chosun; to whiche [whom I.] he schewide hym silf `alyue [on lijf R.] aftir his passioun, by many argumentis, apperinge to hem fourti daies, and spekinge of the rewme of God [of the reume of God; that is, of heuenly blisse. and he eet togidere; that is, Jhesu eet with the postlis, [ve] to whiche sittinge at the mete he aperide in the day of ascen|cioun, as Marc seith in the ende. not de|parte fro Jeru|salem; til thei weren maad able bi the Hooly Goost to puplische the gospel. baptisid in the Holy Gost; bi this baptym is vndirstonden the resseyuinge of the Holy Gost in visible singne, which is seid baptym bi figuratif speche; for the grace of the Holi Gost is seid anoynting, therfore the Glose of Raban seith here that in sum bookis it is thus, Ȝe schulen be anoyntid with the Holy Gost; but bi resoun and holy doctouris it is opin, that the postlis weren cristned in watir, as Crist tauȝte, in iij. c^o. of Joon. [verse 4] And he ete with hem, and comaundide, that thei schulden not de|parte fro [awey fro R.] Jerusalem, but abide the bi|heest of the fadir, which ȝe herden, he [verse 5] seide, bi my mouth; for Joon baptiside in watir, but ȝe schulen be baptisid in the Hooli Goost, aftir these fewe daies. [verse 6] Therfor thei that weren come to gidere, axiden hym, and seiden, Lord, whether in this time thou schalt restore the king|dom

of Israel? [verse 7] And he seide to hem, It is not ȝoure to knowe the tymes ether momentis, whiche the fadir hath [verse 8] put in his power; but ȝe schulen take the vertu [take the ver|tu, etc.; that is, to preche stedfastly and speedly the gospel thourȝ al the world. [verse 10] And whanne thei biheelden hym goynge in to heuene, lo! `twei men [tweyne I.] [twey men; that is, aungels in the licnesse of men. Lire here. Judas the brother of James; to dif|ference of Ju|das the traitour. his bretheren; that is, cosins. noumbrid among us; that is, was oon of the twelue apostlis. gat the part of this seruice; that is, the dig|nite of apostle, not bi lot, but bi chesing of Crist, in 18 C<sup>o</sup>. of Math. and 6 C<sup>o</sup>. of Joon. he weldide, etc.; that is, maad to be weldid of othere, for he castide forth in the temple 30 pens, for which he had seeld Crist wickidly; by whiche pens the princis of prestis bouȝten a feeld for the sepulture of pilgrims, in the 28 C<sup>o</sup>. of Mt. an other; that is, Mathie. take the bi|schopricke of hym; that is, of Judas. Apo|stlehed is seid here bi|schopricke, wherfore bi|schopis ben seid the sucses|souris of apo|stlis, in 21 dis|tinccioun, C<sup>o</sup>. in novo. Lire here. v.] stoden bisidis hem in white clothing, [verse 11] and seiden, Men of Galile, what stonden ȝe biholdinge in to heuene? This Jhe|su, which is takun vp `fro ȝou in to heuene [in to heuene fro ȝou R.] , schal come, as ȝe seyn hym go|ynge in to heuene. [verse 12] Thanne thei turn|eden aȝen to [in to R.] Jerusalem, fro the hille that is clepid `the hille [Om. EI pr. m. Qgkα.] of Olyuete, which is bisidis Jerusalem an halidaies iourney. [verse 13] And whanne thei weren entrid in to the hous, where thei dwelliden, thei wenten vp in to the soler [ether souping place K marg.] , Petir and Joon, James [and James R.] and Andreu, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matheu, James of Alphei, and Symount Zelotes, and Judas of James. [verse 14] Alle these weren lastingli [lastinge gk.] contynuynge with o wille in preier, with wymmen, and Marie, the moder of Jhesu, and with hise britheren. [verse 15] In tho daies Petre roos vp in [into k.] the myd|dil of the britheren, and seide; and ther was a company of men togidere, almest [verse 16] an hundrid and twenti; Britheren, it bihoueth that the scripture be fillid, whiche the Hooly Goost bifore seide bi the mouth of Dauith, of Judas that was [verse 17] ledere of hem that token Jhesu; and was noumbrid among vs, and gat a part

of this seruyce. [verse 18] And this Judas hadde a feeld of the hire of wickidnesse, and he [Om. O.] was hangid, and `to-brast [to-barste IKQck. to-barst in R.] the myd|dil, and alle hise entrailes weren sched abrood. [verse 19] And it was maad knowun to alle men that dwelten in Jerusalem, so that the ilke feeld was clepid Achelde|mak in the langage of hem, that is, the feeld of blood. [verse 20] And it is writun in the book of Salmes, The abitacioun of hem be maad desert, and be ther noon that dwelle in it, and an other take his bi|shopriche. [verse 2] Therfor it bihoueth of these men, that ben gaderid togidere with vs in al the tyme, in which the Lord Jhe|su entride, and wente out among vs, [verse 22] and bigan fro the baptym of Joon til in [Om. b.] to the dai in which he was takun vp fro vs, that oon of these be maad a witnesse of his resurreccioun with vs. [verse 23] And thei ordeyneden tweyn [and thei or|deyneden tweyne; thei departiden these tweyne fro other dis|ciplis, not bi lot, but bi chesing, as excellentere in riȝtfulnesse and in experiense of the dedis of Crist. Thouȝ thei hadden chose these tweyne as ex|cellentere than othere, netheles thei wisten not whether of hem were worthiere to apostlehed; herfore thei besouȝten God|dis dom on this thing, bi send|ing of lottis. on Mathie; this Joseph was the cosyn of Crist, in 4 C^o. of Mt.; but Crist settide Mathie bifore this Joseph, and shewide bi this, that men shulen not be auaunsid to offices of the chirche for kynrede. [verse 24] And thei preieden, and seiden, Thou, Lord, that knowist the hertis of alle men, schewe whom thou [verse 25] hast chosun of these [the g.] tweyne, that oon take the place of this seruyce and apo|stlehed, of which Judas trespasside, that he schulde go in to his place. [verse 26] And thei ȝauen lottis to hem, and the lot felde on Mathie; and he was noumbrid with [with the hk.] enleuen apostlis.
