[verse 1] And summe [summen ag.] [And summe; conuertid of the secte of Farises. tauȝten brithe|ren; conuertid fro hethennesse. whanne sedis|cioun, etc. to Poul and Bar|nabas; that affermeden the contrarie of thes Farisees; for whi to seie that Moises lawe must nedis be kept, is to auoide the gos|pel. Lire here. ve.] camen doun fro Judee, and tauȝten britheren, That but [but if b.] ȝe ben circumcidid after the lawe of Moises, ȝe moun not be maad saaf. [verse 2] Therfor whanne ther was maad not a litil discencioun to Poul and Barnabas aȝens hem, thei or|deyneden, that Poul and Barnabas, and summe othere of hem, schulden go vp to the apostlis and preestis in Jerusalem, on this questioun. [verse 3] And so thei weren led forth of the chirche, and passiden bi Fenyce and Samarie; and thei telden the conuersacioun of hethene men, and thei maden greet [a greet A pr. m.] ioie to alle the [Om. EK pr. m.] bri|theren. [verse 4] And whanne thei camen to Je|rusalem, thei weren resseyued of the chirche and of the apostlis, and of the eldre men, and telden, hou greet thingis God dide with hem. [verse 5] But summe of the erise of Fariseis [the Farisees R.] , that bileueden, risen vp, and seiden, That it bihoueth hem to be circumsidid, and to comaunde to kepe also the lawe of Moises. [verse 6] And the apo|stlis and eldre men camen togidre, to se of `this word [these wordis gk.] . [verse 7] And whanne there was maad a greet sekyng herof, Petre roos, and seide to hem, Britheren, ȝe witen,

that of elde daies in ȝou God chees bi my mouth hethene [hethene men Ka.] , to here the word of [verse 8] the gospel, and to bileue; and God, that knewe hertis [the hertis R.] , bar witnessing, and ȝaf to [verse 9] hem the Hooli Goost, as also to vs; and no thing diuerside bitwixe vs and hem, `and clenside [clansinge K sec. m.] the hertis of hem bi feith. [verse 10] Now thanne what tempten ȝe God, to putte a ȝok on the necke [ether nolle K marg.] of the disci|plis, which nether we, nether oure fadris miȝten bere? [verse 11] But bi the grace of oure Lord Jhesu Crist we bileuen to be saued, as also thei. [verse 12] And al the multitude helde pees, and herden Barnaban and Poul, tellinge hou grete signes and won|dris God dide bi hem in hethene men. [verse 13] And aftir that thei helden pees, James answeride, and seide, Britheren, here ȝe me. [verse 14] Symount telde, hou God visitide, first to take of hethene men a puple to his name. [verse 15] And the wordis of prophetis [verse 16] acorden [acordiden R.] to him, as it is writun, Aftir this [Aftir this; that is, aftir the tyme of the elde testament. I schal turne aȝen; to man|kinde, in tak|inge manhed. bilde the taber|nacle of Da|uith; that is, the chirche of God, either of Crist, bi prech|ing of Crist and of apostlis, that felde doun by manye synnes, and moost by ydolatrie. bijlde aȝeen the cast doun thingis, etc.; for he|thene men weren departid bi many foold ydolatrie, and Jewis weren brooken and departid bi many errouris; Ve. and summe maden voide Goddis heestis for her tradi|ciouns; and alle these er|rouris ben put awey bi the preching of Crist and hise apostlis. reise it; bi many and greete my|racles maad to enhaunsing of cristen feith. V. that othere of men; that is, hethene men. Ve. fro the world; that is, fro without bi|gynnyng. V. fro defoulynge of symylacris; that is, fro et|ingis of thingis offrid to idolis. Ve. stranglid thingis and blood; for the conuersis of Jewis wlatiden this mete; therfore thouȝ the mete were leueful, nathe|les for freend|ful felauschipe, hethene men schulden ab|stene fro suche thingis til the treuthe of the gospel were knowen. Lire here. v.] Y schal turne aȝen, and bilde the tabernacle of Dauid, that felle doun; and Y schal bilde aȝen the cast doun thingis [verse 17] of it, and Y schal reise it; that other men seke the Lord, and alle folkis on which [whom I.] my name is clepid to helpe; the Lord doynge this thing, seith. [verse 18] Fro the world, the werk of the Lord is knowun to the Lord. [verse 19] For which thing Y deme hem that of hethene men ben conuertid [verse 20] to God, to be not disesid, but to write to hem, that thei absteyne hem fro defoul|ingis [defoulyng Rbβ.] of maumetis, and fro fornicacioun, and stranglid thingis, and blood. [verse 21] For Moyses of elde tymes hath in alle citees hem that prechen him in synagogis, where bi ech sabat he is red. [verse 22] Thanne it pleside to [Om. b.] the apostlis, and to the eldre men, with al the chirche, to chees men of hem, and sende to Antioche, with Poul and Barnabas, Judas, that was

named Barsabas, and Silas, the firste [verse 23] men [the firste men, etc.; thouȝ these weren not apo|stlis, natheles thei weren of the principal men aftir the postlis. Ve. bitooken her lyues; that is, puttide forth hemself to the perel of deth. for the name of oure Lord Jhe|su Crist; that is, for the preching of the name of Crist. noo thing more of charge; of obseruaunces of Moises lawe. V. thanne these needful thingis; to lyue comunly either in vnite with Jewis in the firste chirche. [verse 24] For we herden that summe wenten out fro vs, and trobliden [troublen k.] ȝou with wordis, and turneden vpsodoun ȝoure soulis, to whiche [the whiche I.] men we co|maundiden [comaunden gk.] [verse 25] not, it pleside to vs gaderid in to oon, to chese men, and sende to ȝou, with oure [Om. k.] most dereworthe Barna|bas [verse 26] and Poul, men that ȝauen her lyues for the name of oure Lord Jhesu Crist. [verse 27] Therfor we senten Judas and Silas, and thei schulen telle the same thingis to ȝou bi wordis. [verse 28] For it is seyn to the Hooly Goost and to vs, to putte to ȝou no thing more of charge, than these nedeful [verse 29] thingis, that ȝe absteyne ȝou fro the offrid thingis of maumetis, and blood stranglid, and fornicacioun. Fro whiche ȝe kepinge ȝou, schulen do wel. Fare ȝe wel. [verse 30] Therfor thei weren let go, and camen doun to Antioche; and whanne the multitude was gaderid, thei token [verse 31] the epistle [pistle O.] ; which whanne thei hadden red, thei ioyden on the coumfort. [verse 32] And Judas and Silas and thei, for thei weren prophetis, coumfortiden britheren, and confermyden with ful many wordis. [verse 33] But aftir that thei hadden be there a lytil while, thei weren let go of britheren with pees, to hem that hadden sent hem. [verse 34] [Al this clause til thidir, For|sothe Poule and Barnabas, is not in Greek, neither in bookis amend|id, but first it was set be the manere of a glose, and after|ward it was set in the text bi ignoraunce of writeris. [verse 35] And Poul and Barna|bas dwelten at Antioche, techinge and prechinge the word of the Lord, with othere manye. [verse 36] But after summe daies, Poul seide to Barnabas, Turne we aȝen, and visite [visite we Ka.] britheren bi alle

citees, in whiche we han prechid the word of the Lord, hou thei han hem. [verse 37] And Barnabas wolde take with hym Joon, that was named Marcus. [verse 38] But Poul preiede him [preiede him; that is, Barna|bas, that he schulde abstene fro the felau|schipe of Joon. he that depart|ede fro hem; Joon departide for dreede of perels neiȝinge, either for ouer greet fleschly loue to his mo|dir dwellinge in Jerusalem, either in hap for euer either; wherfore Poule forsook hym, for thei that goon to preche, owen to be sted|fast, and de|partid fro fleschly loue; and moost whanne thei goon among vnfeithful men and pursueris, as it was in this poynt. [verse 39] And dissencioun [Not contrarie to charite, for ech of hem wolde good, and oon was moued bi oo resoun, and another bi another resoun; and more good fruit of prech|ing byfelde her|by. [verse 40] And Poul chees Silas, and wente forth fro the britheren, and was bitakun to the grace of God. [verse 41] And he wente bi Sirie and Silice, and con|fermyde the chirche, comaundinge to kepe the heestis of apostlis [the apostlis Rh.] and [and of Ik.] eldre men.
