[verse 1] God, that spak sum tyme bi prophetis in many*. [ether manyfold K marg.] maneres to oure fadris, at the [verse 2] laste in these daies he hath spoke to vs bi the sone; whom he hath ordeyned eir of alle thingis, and bi whom he made the worldis. [verse 3] Which whanne also he is the briȝtnesse of glorie, and figure of his substaunce, and berith alle thingis bi word of his vertu, he makith purgacioun of synnes, and syttith on*. Which, whanne it hadde takun bigyn|nyng to be teld out by the Lord, of hem that herden is confermyd in to vs. [verse 4] For God witnesside to gidere bi myraclis, and wondris, and grete merueilis, and dyuerse vertues, and departyngis of the Hooli Goost, bi his wille. [verse 5] But not to aungels God sugetide the world that is to comynge, of which we speken. [verse 6] But sum man witnesside in a place, and seide, What thing is man, that thou art myndeful of hym, or mannus sone, for thou visitist hym? [verse 7] Thou hast maad hym a litil lesse than aungels; thou hast corowned hym with glorie and onour; and thou hast ordeyned him on the werkis of thin hondis. [verse 8] Thou hast maad alle thingis suget vndur hise feet. And in that that he sugetide alle thingis to hym, he lefte no thing vnsuget*. [vnsugettid k.] to him. [verse 3] But this byschop is had worthi of more glorie than Moises, bi as myche as he hath more honour of the hous, that made the hous. [verse 4] For ech hous is maad of sum man; he that made alle thingis of nouȝt is God. [verse 5] And Moises was trewe in al his hous, as a seruaunt, in to witnessyng of tho thingis that [verse 6] weren to be seid; but Crist as a sone in his hous. Which hous we ben, if we holden sad trist and glorie of hope in to the ende. [verse 7] Wherfor as the Hooli Goost seith, To dai, if ȝe han herd his vois, [verse 8] nyle ȝe hardne ȝoure hertis, as in wrath|thing, lijk the dai of temptacioun*. [verse 2] For it is told also to vs, as to hem. And the word that was herd profitide not to hem, not meynd to feith of tho*. [ony k.] thingis that thei herden. [verse 3] For we that han bileued, schulen entre in to reste*. [the reste gko.], as he seide, As Y swoor in my wraththe, thei schulen not entre in to my reste. And whanne the werkis weren maad perfit at the ordynaunce of the [verse 4] world, he seide thus in a place of the seuenthe dai, And God restide in the seuenthe dai from alle hise*. [Om. b.] werkis. [verse 5] And in this place eftsoone, Thei schulen not entre in to my reste. [verse 6] Therfor for it sueth, that summen*. [summe men Q.] schulen entre in to it, and thei to whiche it was teld to bifor, entriden not for her vnbileue. [verse 12] For the word of God is quyk, and spedi in worching, and more able to perse than any tweyne eggid swerd, and stretchith forth to the departynge of the soule*. For alle thingis ben nakid and opyn to hise iȝen, to whom a word to vs. [verse 14] Therfor we that han a greet bischop, that perside heuenes, Jhesu, the sone of God, holde we the knoulechyng of oure hope. [verse 15] For we han not a bischop, that may not haue compassioun on oure in|firmytees, but was temptid bi alle thingis bi lycnesse, with oute synne. [verse 16] Therfor go we with trist to the trone of his grace, that we gete merci, and fynde grace in couenable help.

CAP. V.

[verse 1] For ech bischop takun of men, is or|deyned for men in these thingis `that ben*. [Om. R pr. m.] to God, that he offre ȝiftis and sa|crifices for synnes. [verse 2] Which may togidere sorewe with hem, that beth*. [ben CEIKMRXabceghkoαβ.] vnkunnynge and erren; for also he is enuyrounned with infirmytee. [verse 3] And therfor he owith, as for the puple, so also for hym silf, to offre for synnes. [verse 4] Nethir ony man taketh*. [take A.] to hym onour, but he that is clepid of God, as Aaron was. [verse 5] So Crist clarifiede not hym silf, that he were bischop, but he that spak to hym, Thou art my sone, to dai Y gendride thee. [verse 6] As `in anothere Page  487 place he seith*. CAP. VI.

V.] of Crist, be we borun to the perfeccioun of hym, not eftsoone leggynge the foundement of penaunce fro deed werkis, and of the feith to God, [verse 2] and of teching of baptimys, and of leiynge on of hondis, and of risyng aȝen of deed men, and of the*. [Om. Eb.] euerlastinge doom. [verse 3] And this thing we schulen do, if God schal suffre. [verse 4] But it is impossible*. [vnpossible ERk.], that thei that ben onys liȝtned, and `han Page  488 tastid also*. [also haue taastid R.] an heuenly ȝifte, and ben [verse 5] maad parceneris of the Hooli Goost, and netheles han tastid the good word of God, and the vertues of the world to [verse 6] comynge, and ben slidun fer awei, that thei be renewid*. [the kinges E.], and [verse 2] blesside hym; to whom also Abraham departide tithis of alle thingis; first he is seid king of riȝtwisnesse, and aftirward kyng of Salem, that is to seie, king of [verse 3] pees, with out fadir, with out modir, with out genologie, nether hauynge bi|gynnyng of daies, nether ende of lijf; and he is lickened to the sone of God, and dwellith preest with outen ende. [verse 4] But biholde ȝe how greet is this, to whom Abraham the patriark ȝaf tithis of the beste thingis. [verse 5] For men of the sones of Leuy takinge presthod han maundement to take tithis of the puple, bi the lawe, that is to seie, of her bri|theren, thouȝ also thei wenten out of the leendis of Abraham. [verse 6] But he whos generacioun is not noumbrid in hem, took tithis of Abraham; and he blesside this Abraham, which hadde repromys|siouns*. [repromissiouns, eithir biheestis R. repromyssioun k.]. CAP. VIII.

[verse 4] Therfor if he were on erthe, he were no preest, whanne ther weren that schulden [verse 5] offre ȝiftis bi the lawe, whiche seruen to the saumpler and schadewe of heueneli thingis. [verse 6] But now he hath getun a betere mynysterie, bi so myche as he is a medi|atour of a betere testament, which is confermyd with betere biheestis. [verse 7] For if the ilke firste hadde lackid blame, the place of the secounde schulde not haue be souȝt. [verse 8] For he repreuynge hem seith, Lo! daies comen, seith the Lord, and Y schal make perfit a newe testament on the hous of Israel, and on the hous of [verse 9] Juda; not lijk the testament that Y made to her fadris, `in the dai*. [Om. Egk.] in which Y cauȝte her hond, that Y schulde lede hem out of the loond of Egipt; for thei dwell|iden not perfitli in my testament, and Y haue dispisid hem, seith the Lord. [verse 10] But this is the*. [Om. bk.] testament, which Y schal dis|pose to the hous of Israel aftir tho*. [the R pr. m.] daies, seith the Lord, in*. [verse 11] And ech man schal not teche his neiȝebore, and ech man his brother, sei|ynge, Knowe thou the Lord; for alle men schulen knowe me, fro the lesse*. [leste gk.] to*. [or hidynge X sec. m. marg.], the secounde tabernacle, that is seid sancta sanctorum, that is, hooli [verse 4] of hooli thingis; hauynge a goldun cen|rer, and the arke of the testament, keuered aboute on ech side with gold, in which was a pot of gold hauynge manna, and the ȝerde of Aaron that florischide, and [verse 5] the tablis of the testament; on whiche thingis*. [Om. E.] weren cherubyns of glorie, ouer|schadewinge the propiciatorie; of whiche thingis it is not now to seie bi alle. [verse 6] But whanne these weren maad thus togidere, preestis entriden eueremore in the formere tabernacle, doynge the offices of sacrifices; [verse 7] but in the secounde tabernacle, the bischop entride onys in the ȝeer, not without blood, which he offride for his ignoraunce and the puplis. [verse 8] For the Hooli Goost signefiede this thing, that not ȝit the weie of seyntis was openyd*. [ether shewed K marg.], while the formere tabernacle hadde staat. [verse 9] Which parable is of this present tyme, bi which also ȝiftis and sacrifices ben offrid, whiche moun not make a man seruynge perfit bi conscience, oneli in [verse 10] metis, and drynkis, and dyuerse waisch|ingis, and riȝtwisnessis of fleisch, that weren sett to*. [on a.] the tyme of correccioun. [verse 11] But Crist beynge a bischop of goodis to comynge, entride bi a largere and per|fitere tabernacle, not maad bi hoond, that [verse 12] is to seye, not of this makyng, nether bi blood of goot buckis, or of calues, but bi his owne blood, entride onys in to the*. [the EIg.] trespassyngis that weren vndur the formere testament, thei that ben clepid take the biheest of euerlastinge eritage. [verse 16] For where a testament is, it is nede, that the deth of the*. [Om. R.] testament makere come bitwixe. [verse 17] For a testament is confermed in deed men; ellis it is not worthe, while he lyueth, that made the testament. [verse 21] Also he spreynde with blood the tabernacle, and alle the vessels of the seruyce in lijk maner. [verse 22] And almest alle thingis ben clensid in blood bi the lawe; and without scheding of blood remyssioun of synnes*. [synne I pr. m.] is not maad. [verse 23] Therfor it is nede, that the saumpleris*. [saumpler k.] of heuenli thingis be clensid with these thingis; but thilke heuenli thingis with betere sacrificis than these. [verse 24] For Jhesus entride not in to hooli thingis maad bi Page  495 hoondis, that ben saumpleris*. [ensaumplers EIk.] of very thingis, but in to heuene it silf, that he appere now to the cheer of God for vs; [verse 25] nether that he offre him silf ofte, as the bischop entride in to hooli thingis bi [verse 26] alle ȝeeris in alien blood, ellis it bihofte hym to suffre ofte fro the bigynnyng of the world; but now onys in the ending of worldis*. [the worldis R.], to*. [to the k.] distruccioun of synne bi his sacrifice he apperide. [verse 27] And*. [Not a.] as it is [verse 28] ordeynede to men, onys to die, but aftir this is the dom, so Crist was offrid onys, to auoyde*. [ether do awey K marg.] the synnes of many men; the secounde tyme he schal appere with outen synne to men that abiden him in to heelthe.

CAP. X.

[verse 1] For the lawe hauinge a schadewe of good thingis `that ben*. [Om. R pr. m.] to come, not the ilke image of thingis, mai neuer make men neiȝinge perfit bi the ilke same sacri|fices*. [sacrifice A pr. m.], which thei offren without ceessing [verse 2] bi alle ȝeeris; ellis thei schulden haue ceessid to be offrid, for as myche as the worschiperis clensid onys, hadden not*. [Om. g pr. m. k.] ferthermore conscience of synne. [verse 3] But in hem mynde of synnes is maad bi alle ȝeris. [verse 4] For it is impossible that synnes be doon awei bi blood of boolis, and of buckis of geet. [verse 5] Therfor he entrynge in to the world, seith, Thou woldist not sa|crifice and offryng; but thou hast schapun [verse 6] a bodi to me; brent sacrificis*. [sacrifice A pr. m. K pr. m. R pr. m.] also for synne plesiden not to thee. [verse 7] Thanne Y seide, Lo! Y come; in the bigynnyng of the book it is writun of me, that Y do thi wille, God. [verse 8] He seiynge bifor, That Page  496 thou woldist not sacrificis, and offringis, and brent sacrifices for synne, ne tho thingis ben plesaunt to thee, whiche ben [verse 9] offrid bi the lawe*. [What ben thei worth than that ben offrid after mennus fantasies? T.], thanne Y seide, Lo! Y come, that Y do thi wille, God. He doith awei the firste*. [that is, the olde testament K marg.], that he make stid|fast the secounde*. [that is, the newe testament K marg.]. [verse 10] In which wille we ben halewid bi the offring of the bodi of Crist Jhesu onys. [verse 11] And ech prest is redi mynystrynge ech dai, and ofte tymes offringe the same sacrifices, whiche moun neuere do awei synnes. [verse 12] But this man offringe o*. [a AQ.] sacrifice for synnes, for euere more sittith in the riȝthalf of God the [verse 13] fadir; fro thennus forth abidinge, til hise enemyes ben put a stool of hise feet. [verse 19] Therfor, britheren, hauynge trist in to the entring of hooli thingis in [verse 20] the blood of Crist, which halewide to vs a newe weie, and lyuynge bi the hiling, [verse 21] that is to seie, his fleisch, and we hau|ynge the greet preest on the hous of God, [verse 22] neiȝe we with very herte in the plente of feith; and be oure hertis spreined fro an*. EIgk.] dom is dreed|ful, and the suyng of fier, which schal waste aduersaries. [verse 28] Who that brekith*. [ether maketh voyde K marg.] Moises lawe, dieth withouten ony merci, [verse 29] bi tweine*. [two I.] or thre witnessis; hou myche more*. [Om. EI pr. m. Qgk.] gessen ȝe, that he disserueth worse turmentis, which defouleth the sone of God, and holdith the blood of the testa|ment pollut, in which he is halewid, and doith dispit to the spirit of grace? [verse 30] For we knowen him that seide, To me veni|aunce, and Y schal ȝelde. And eft, For the Lord schal deme his puple. [verse 31] It is ferdful to falle in to the*. [Om. A pr. m.] hondis of God lyuynge. [verse 32] And haue ȝe mynde on the formere daies, in which ȝe weren liȝtned, and suffriden greet strijf of passiouns. [verse 33] And in the `tothir*. [oothir I.] ȝe*. [Om. O.] weren maad a spectacle bi schenschipis and tribula|ciouns; in an othir ȝe weren maad felowis of men lyuynge so. [verse 34] For also to*. [and to A pr. m.] boundun men ȝe hadden compassioun, and ȝe res|seyueden with ioye the robbyng of ȝoure goodis, knowinge that ȝe han a betere and a*. [Om. R.] dwellinge substaunce. [verse 35] Therfor nyle ȝe leese ȝoure trist, which hath greet rewarding. [verse 36] For pacience is nedeful to ȝou, that ȝe do the wille of God, and bringe Page  498 aȝen the biheest. [verse 37] For ȝit a litil, and*. [Om. R pr. m.] he that is to comynge*. [come I sec. m. a sec. m.] schal come, and he schal not tarie. [verse 38] For my iust man lyueth of feith; that if he withdrawith hym silf, he schal not plese to my soule. [verse 39] But we ben not the sones of withdrawing awei in to perdicioun, but of feith in to get|ynge of soule.

CAP. XI.

[verse 1] But feith is the substaunce of thingis that ben to be hopid, and an argument of thingis not apperynge. [verse 2] And in this feith elde men han gete witnessyng. [verse 3] Bi feith we vndurstonden that the worldis weren maad bi Goddis word, that visible thingis weren maad of vnuysible*. [inuisible a passim.] thingis. [verse 4] Bi feith Abel offride a myche more sacri|fice than Caym to God, bi which he gat witnessyng to be iust, for God bar wit|nessyng to hise ȝiftis; and bi that feith he deed spekith ȝit. [verse 5] Bi feith Ennok was translatid, that he schulde not se deth; and he was not foundun, for the Lord translatide him. For bifore transla|cioun he hadde witnessing that he pleside God. [verse 6] And it is impossible to plese God without feith. For it bihoueth that a man comynge to God, bileue that he is, and that he is rewardere to*. [of I.] men that seken hym. [verse 7] Bi feith Noe dredde, thorouȝ answere takun of these thingis that ȝit weren not seyn, and schapide a schip in to the*. [Om. Rk.] helthe of his hous; bi which he dampnede the world, and is ordeyned eir of riȝtwisnesse, which is bi feith. [verse 8] By feith he that is clepid Abraham, obeiede Page  499 to go out in to a place, whiche he schulde take in to eritage; and he wente out, not witinge whidur he schulde go. [verse 9] Bi feith he dwelte in the loond of biheest, as in an alien loond, dwellynge in litle housis with Ysaac and Jacob, euene heiris of the same biheest. [verse 10] For he abood a citee hauynge foundementis, whos crafti man and maker is God. [verse 11] Bi feith also the ilke Sara bareyn, took vertu in consceyuyng of seed, ȝhe, aȝen*. [aȝen of A pr. m. g pr. m.] the tyme of age; for sche bileuede hym trewe, that hadde bi|hiȝte. [verse 12] For which thing of oon, and ȝit nyȝ deed, ther ben*. [weren R pr. m.] borun as sterris of heuene in multitude, and as grauel that is at the see side out of noumbre. [verse 13] Bi feith alle these ben deed, whanne the biheestis weren not takun, but thei bi|helden hem afer, and gretynge hem wel, and knoulechide that thei weren pil|gryms, and herboryd men*. [verse 31] Bi feith Raab hoor*. [the hoore boβ.] resseyuede the aspieris with pees, and perischide not with vnbileueful men. [verse 32] And what ȝit schal Y seie? For tyme schal faile to me tellynge of Gedeon, Barak, Sampson, Jepte, Dauid, and Samuel, and [verse 33] of*. [Om. R.] othere prophetis; whiche bi feith ouer|camen rewmes, wrouȝten riȝtwisnesse, gaten repromyssiouns; thei stoppiden the [verse 34] mouthis of liouns, thei quenchiden the feersnesse of fier, thei dryueden*. [verse 35] Wymmen resseyueden her deed children fro deth to lijf; but othere weren holdun forth, not takinge redempcioun, that thei schul|den fynde a betere aȝenrising. [verse 36] And othere asaieden scornyngis and betingis, more ouer and boondis and prisouns. [verse 37] Thei weren stoned, thei weren sawid, thei weren temptid, thei weren deed in*. [of a.] sleyng of swerd. Thei wenten aboute in broc*. [brockis EK. sec. m.] skynnes, and in skynnes of geet, [verse 38] nedi, angwischid, turmentid; to whiche the world was not worthi. CAP. XII.

[verse 1] Therfor we that han so greet a cloude of witnessis put to, do we awei al charge, and synne stondinge aboute vs, and bi pacience renne we to the*. [Om. b.] batel*. [strijf R.] pur|posid [verse 2] to vs, biholdinge in to the makere of feith, and the perfit endere, Jhesu; which whanne ioye was purposid to hym, he suffride the cros, and dispiside confusioun, and sittith on the riȝthalf of the seet of God. [verse 3] And bithenke ȝe on hym that suffride siche `aȝen seiynge*. [aȝenseiyngis k.] of Page  502 synful men aȝens hym silf, that ȝe be not maad wery, failinge in ȝoure soulis. [verse 4] For ȝe aȝenstoden not ȝit `til to*. [vnto I.] blood, fiȝtyng aȝens synne. [verse 5] And ȝe han forȝet the coumfort that spekith to ȝou as to sones, and seith, My sone, nyle thou dispise the teching of the Lord, nether be thou maad weri, the while thou art chastisid of hym. [verse 6] For the Lord chastisith hym that he loueth; he betith euery sone that he resseyueth. [verse 7] Abide ȝe stille in chastising; God proferith*. [preuith gk.] hym to ȝou as to sones. For what sone is it, whom the fadir chastisith not? [verse 8] That if ȝe `ben out*. [be not A.] of chastising, whos parteneris ben ȝe alle maad, thanne ȝe ben auowtreris, and not sones. [verse 9] And aftirward we hadden fadris of oure fleisch, techeris, and we with reuerence dredden hem. Whethir not myche more we schulen obeische to the fadir of spiritis, and we schulen lyue? [verse 10] And thei in tyme of fewe dayes tauȝten vs bi her wille; but this fadir techith to that thing that is profitable, in resseyuynge the halewing of hym. [verse 11] And ech chastisyng in present tyme semeth to be not of ioye, but of sorewe; but aftirward it schal ȝelde fruyt of riȝt|wisnesse moost pesible to men exercisid bi it. [verse 12] For whiche thing reise ȝe slowe [verse 13] hondis, and knees vnboundun, and make ȝe riȝtful steppis to ȝoure feet; that no man haltinge erre, but more be heelid. [verse 14] Sue ȝe pees with alle men, and holy|nesse, with out which no man schal se God. [verse 15] Biholde ȝe, that no man faile to the grace of God, that no roote of bit|tirnesse buriownynge vpward lette, and [verse 16] manye ben defoulid bi it; that no man Page  503 be letchour, ether vnhooli, as Esau*. [verse 18] But ȝe han not come to the fier able to be touchid, and able to come to, and to the*. [Om. R.] whirlewynd, and myst, and tempest, [verse 19] and soun of trumpe, and vois of wordis; which thei that herden, excusiden hem, that the word schulde not be maad to hem. [verse 20] For thei beren not that that was seid, And if a beeste touchide the hil, it was stonyd. [verse 21] And so dredeful it was that was seyn, that Moises seide, Y am aferd, and ful of trembling. [verse 22] But ȝe han come nyȝ to the hil Sion*. [spekynge bettir R.] than Abel. [verse 25] Se ȝe, that ȝe forsake not the spekere; for if thei that forsaken him that spak on the erthe, aschapide*. [ascapen a.] not, myche more we that turnen awei fro him that spekith to vs*. [him I.] fro heuenes. [verse 26] Whos vois than mouyde the erthe, but now he aȝen bi|hetith, and seith, Ȝit onys and Y schal moue not oneli erthe*. [the erthe Ka.], but also heuene. [verse 27] And that he seith, Ȝit onys, he declarith the translacioun of mouable thingis, as Page  504 of maad thingis, that tho thingis dwelle, that ben vnmouable. [verse 28] Therfor we res|seyuynge the kingdom vnmouable, haue we grace, bi which serue we plesynge to God with drede and reuerence. [verse 29] For oure God is fier that wastith.

CAP. XIII.

[verse 1] The charite of britherhod dwelle in [verse 2] ȝou, and nyle ȝe forȝete hospitalite; for bi this summen plesiden to aungels, that weren resseyued to herborewe. [verse 3] Thenke ȝe on boundun men, as ȝe weren togidere boundun, and of trauelinge men, as ȝe*. [ȝour E. ȝe ȝou Ia.] silf dwellinge*. [dwelliden k.] in the body. [verse 4] `Wedding is*. [Weddingis A et plures.] in alle thingis onourable, and bed vn|wemmed; for God schal deme fornica|touris and auouteris*. [auoutreris EIKQReghkoαβ.]. [verse 5] Be ȝoure ma|neres withoute coueitise, apaied with present thingis; for he seide, Y schal not [verse 6] leeue thee, nether forsake, so that we seie tristily, The Lord is an helpere to me; Y schal not drede, what a man schal do to me. [verse 7] Haue ȝe mynde of ȝoure souereyns, that han spokun to ȝou the word of God; of whiche*. [whom I.] `biholde ȝe*. [biholde K sec. m. ȝe biholdyng O.] the goyng out of lyuynge*. [lynage a.], and*. [Om. K sec. m.] sue ȝe the [verse 8] feith of hem, Jhesu Crist, ȝistirdai, and to dai, he is also into worldis. [verse 9] Nyle ȝe be led awei with dyuerse `techingis, and straunge*. [and straunge techingis R.]. [verse 12] For which thing Jhesu, that he schulde halewe the puple bi his blood, suffride with out the gate. [verse 13] Therfor go we out*. [Om. k.] to hym with out the castels, berynge his repreef. [verse 20] And God of pees, that ladde out fro deth the greet scheepherd of scheep, in the blood of euerlastinge testament, oure [verse 21] Lord Jhesu Crist, schape ȝou in al good thing, that ȝe do the wille of hym; and he do in ȝou that thing that schal plese bifor hym, bi Jhesu Crist, to whom be glorie in to*.
