THESSALONICENSIS ben Macedonyes in Jhesu Crist. Whanne thei hadden resseyued the word of treuthe, thei stoden stidfastli [stifli ag.] in the feith, and also in persecucioun of her owene citeseynys; ferthermore thei resseyueden not false apostlis, ne [neither N.] tho thingis that weren seid of false apostlis. These the apostle [pistil b. postle egko.] preisith, writinge to hem from Atenys, bi Titicus and Onesimus.

Jerome in his prolog on this pistle seith this [From CKMNXabchoα. Heere endith the prolog, and bigynneth the pistle. R. Jerom in his prologe seith this to Tessalonicensis. U. Here endith the prologe, and bigynneth the pistile to Tessalonicienseis. g. No final rubric in AEITefk.] .

[verse 1] Poul, and Siluan, and Tymothe, to the chirche of Tessalonicensis, in God the [verse 2] fadir, and in the Lord Jhesu Crist, grace and pees to ȝou. We doon thankyngis to God euere more for alle ȝou, and we maken mynde of ȝou in oure preyeris

[verse 3] withouten ceessyng; hauynge mynde of the werk of ȝoure feith, and trauel, and charite, and abyding of the hope of oure Lord Jhesu Crist, bifor God and oure fadir. [verse 4] Ȝe louyde [biloued b.] britheren of God, [verse 5] we witinge ȝoure chesing; for oure gospel was not at ȝou in word oneli, but also in vertu, and in the Hooli Goost, and in myche plente; as ȝe witen, whiche we [verse 6] weren among ȝou for ȝou; and ȝe ben maad foleweris of vs, and of the Lord, resseyuynge the word in myche tribula|cioun, with ioye of the Hooli Goost; [verse 7] so that ȝe ben maad ensaumple to alle men that bileuen, in Macedonye and in Acaie. [verse 8] For of ȝou the word of the Lord is pupplischid, not oneli in Mace|donye and Acaie, but ȝoure feith that is to God, in ech place is gon forth; so that it is not nede to vs to [for to CEIK sec. m. QXabcghkoαβ.] speke ony thing. [verse 9] For thei schewen of ȝou, what maner entre we hadden to ȝou, and hou ȝe ben conuertid to God fro maumettis, to serue to the [Om. Rbh.] lyuynge God and veri; [verse 10] and [Om. b.] to abide his sone fro heuenes, whom he reiside fro deth, the Lord Jhesu, that delyuerede us fro wraththe to com|ynge.

CAP. II.

[verse 1] For, britheren, ȝe witen oure entre to [verse 2] ȝou, for it was not veyn; but first we suffriden, and weren punyschid with wrongis [ether false repreuynges K marg.] , as ȝe witen in Filippis [Filipensis k.] , and hadden trust in oure Lord, to speke to ȝou the gospel of God in myche bisy|nesse. [verse 3] And oure exortacioun [ether teching K marg.] is not of errour, nether of vnclennesse, nether in [verse 4] gile, but as we ben preued of God, that the gospel of God schulde be takun to vs, so we speken; not as plesynge to men, but to God that preueth oure

hertis. [verse 5] For nether we weren ony tyme in word of glosing, as ȝe witen, nether in occasioun of auerise; God is witnesse; [verse 6] nether sekinge glorie of men, nether of [verse 7] ȝou, nether of othere, whanne we, as Cristis apostlis, miȝten haue be in charge to ȝou. But we [Om. R pr. m.] weren maad litle in the myddil of ȝou, as if a nursche fostre [verse 8] hir sones; so we desiringe ȝou with greet loue, wolden haue bitake to ȝou, not oneli the gospel of God, but also oure lyues, for ȝe ben maad [Om. K pr. m.] most dereworthe to vs. [verse 9] For, britheren, ȝe ben myndeful of oure trauel and werynesse; we worchiden [wrouȝten RC. worche ko.] nyȝt and day, that we schulden not greue ony of ȝou, and prechiden to ȝou the euangelie [gospel R.] of God. [verse 10] God and ȝe ben witnessis, hou holili, and iustli, and with outen pleynt, we weren to ȝou that bi|leueden. [verse 11] As ȝe witen, hou we preyeden ȝou, and coumfortiden ech of ȝou, as the [verse 12] fadir hise sones, and we han witnessid, that ȝe schulden go worthili to God, that clepide ȝou in to his kingdom and glorie. [verse 13] Therfor we doon thankingis to God with outen ceessyng. For whanne ȝe hadden take of vs the word `of the heryng of God [Om. g.] , ȝe token it not as the word of men, but as `it is [Om. a.] verili, the word of God, that worchith in ȝou that han bi|leued. [verse 14] For, britheren, ȝe [we k.] ben maad foleweris of the chirchis of God, that ben in Jude, in Crist Jhesu, for ȝe han suffrid the same thingis of ȝoure euene lynagis, as thei of the [Om. a.] Jewis. [verse 15] Whiche slowen bothe the Lord Jhesu and the [Om. ak.] profetis, and pursueden vs, and thei plesen not to God, and thei ben aduersaries to [verse 16] alle men; forbedinge vs to speke to he|thene men, that thei be maad saaf, that thei fille her synnes euere more; for the wraththe of God cam on hem in to the

ende. [verse 17] And, britheren, we desolat fro ȝou for a tyme, bi mouth and in bihold|ing, but not in herte, han hiȝed more plenteuousli to se ȝoure face with greet desir. [verse 18] For we wolden come to ȝou, ȝhe, Y Poul, onys and eftsoone, but Sathanas lettide vs. [verse 19] For whi what is oure hope, or ioye, or coroun of glorie? Whether ȝe ben not bifore oure Lord Jhesu Crist in his comyng? [verse 20] For ȝe ben oure glorie and ioye.

CAP. III.

[verse 1] For which thing we suffriden no len|gere, and it pleside to vs to dwelle aloone [verse 2] at Atenys; and we senten Tymothe, oure brother, and mynystre of God in [in to k.] the euangelie of Crist, to ȝou to be con|fermyd, and to be tauȝt for ȝoure feith, [verse 3] that no man be mouyd in these tribu|laciouns. For ȝe [ȝour E. ȝe ȝou R.] silf witen, that in this this thing we ben set. [verse 4] For whanne we weren at ȝou, we biforseiden to ȝou, that we schulden suffre tribulaciouns; as it is don, and ȝe witen. [verse 5] Therfor Y Poul, no lenger abidinge, sente to knowe ȝoure feith, lest perauenture he that temptith tempte ȝou, and ȝoure trauel be maad veyn. [verse 6] But now, whanne Tymothe schal come to vs fro ȝou, and telle to vs ȝoure feith and charite, and that ȝe han good mynde of vs, euere desyringe to se vs, [verse 7] as we also ȝou; therfor, britheren, we ben coumfortid in ȝou, in al oure nede and tribulacioun, bi ȝoure feith. [verse 8] For now we lyuen, if ȝe stonden in the Lord. [verse 9] For what doyng of thankingis moun we ȝelde to God for ȝou, in al ioye, in which [verse 10] we ioyen for ȝou bifor oure Lord? nyȝt and dai more plenteuousli preiynge, that we se ȝoure face, and fulfille tho thingis

that failen to ȝoure feith. [verse 11] But God hym silf and oure fadir, and the Lord Jhesu Crist, dresse oure weye to ȝou. [verse 12] And the Lord multiplie ȝou, and make ȝoure charite to be plenteuouse of ech to othere, and in to alle men, as also we [verse 13] in ȝou; that ȝoure hertis ben confermyd with outen pleynt in holynesse, bifor God and oure fadir, in the comyng of oure Lord Jhesu Crist with alle hise seyntis. Amen.

CAP. IV.

[verse 1] Therfor, britheren, fro hennus for|ward we preien ȝou, and bisechen in the Lord Jhesu, that as ȝe han resseyued of vs, hou it bihoueth ȝou to go and to plese God, so walke ȝe, that ȝe abounde the [Om. a.] more. [verse 2] For ȝe witen what co|maundementis Y haue ȝouun to ȝou bi the Lord Jhesu. [verse 3] For this is the wille of God, ȝoure holynesse, that ȝe absteyne ȝou fro fornycacioun. [verse 4] That ech of ȝou kunne welde his vessel in holynesse, and [verse 5] onour; not in passioun of lust, as he|thene men that knowen not God. [verse 6] And that no man ouergo, nethir disseyue [that is, in cause ether nede K marg.] his brothir in chaffaring. For the Lord is venger of alle these thingis, as we biforseiden to ȝou, and han witnessid. [verse 7] For God clepide not vs in to vnclennesse, but in to holynesse. [verse 8] Therfor he that dispisith these thingis, dispisith not man, but God, that also ȝaf his holi spirit in vs. [verse 9] But of the [Om. g.] charite of britherhed we hadden no nede to write to ȝou; ȝe silf [ȝou silf IKa.] han lerud [lerned plures. lered I.] of God, that ȝe loue [verse 10] togidere; for ȝe don that in to alle bri|theren in al Macedonye. And, britheren, we preyen ȝou, that ȝe abounde more; [verse 11] and taken kepe, that ȝe be quyet; and that ȝe do ȝoure nede, and [and that K sec. m.] `ȝe worche [worche ȝe IR.]

with ȝoure hoondis, as we han comaundid to ȝou; and that ȝe wandre onestli to hem that ben with outforth, and that of no mannus [man KR.] ȝe desir ony thing. [verse 12] For, britheren, we wolen not, that ȝe vn|knowe of men that dien, that ȝe be not soreuful, as othere that han not hope. [verse 13] For if we bileuen, that Jhesu was deed, and roos aȝen, so God schal lede with hym hem that ben deed bi Jhesu. [verse 14] And we seien this thing to ȝou in the word of the Lord, that we that lyuen, that ben left in the comyng of the Lord, schulen not come bifor hem that ben deed. [verse 15] For the Lord hym silf schal come doun fro heuene, in [into a.] the comaundement [comaundementes Q.] , and in the vois of an archaungel, and in the trumpe of God; and the deed men that ben in Crist, schulen rise aȝen first. [verse 16] Afterward we that lyuen, that ben left, schulen be rauyschid togidere with hem in cloudis, metinge Crist `in to [in EIK sec. m. b pr. m. kα.] the eir; and so euere more we schulen be with the Lord. [verse 17] Therfor be ȝe coumfortid togidere in these wordis.

CAP. V.

[verse 1] But, britheren, of tymes and momentis ȝe neden not that Y write to ȝou. [verse 2] For ȝe silf [ȝour self E. ȝou silf IKa.] witen diligentli, that the dai of the Lord schal come, as a theef in the niȝt. [verse 3] For whanne thei schulen seie pees is, and sikirnesse, thanne sudeyn deth schal come on hem, as sorewe to a wom|man that is with child, and thei schulen not scape [ascape eβ.] . [verse 4] But, britheren, ȝe ben not in derknessis, that the ilke dai as a theef catche ȝou. [verse 5] For alle ȝe ben the sones

of liȝt, and sones of dai; we ben not of niȝt, nether of derknessis. [verse 6] Therfor slepe we not as othere; but wake we, and be we sobre. [verse 7] For thei that slepen [in lustis and synnes. sleepen in the niȝt of ignoraunce. For as the filo|sofre seith in iii. bok[e of] Etikis, ech yuel man is vnkun|nynge. Lire here. Either slepen in the niȝt; that is, her synnes han drawen hem herto, that thei forȝete euer lastinge lijf, and resten in these temporal lustes. The Glose here. ve.] , slepen in the niȝt, and thei that ben drunkun, ben drunkun in the niȝt. [verse 8] But we that ben of the dai, ben sobre, clothid in the haburioun of feith and of charite, and in the helme of hope of heelthe. [verse 9] For God puttide not vs in to wraththe, but in to the [Om. Ehkoβ.] purchasing of heelthe bi oure [verse 10] Lord Jhesu Crist, that was deed for vs; that [for a.] whether we waken, whether we slepen, we lyue togidere with him. [verse 11] For which thing comforte ȝe togidere, and edefie ȝe ech other, as ȝe doon. [verse 12] And, britheren, we preien ȝou, that ȝe knowen hem that trauelen among ȝou, and ben souereyns to ȝou in the Lord, and techen [verse 13] ȝou, that ȝe han hem more aboundantli in charyte; and for the werk of hem, haue ȝe pees with hem. [verse 14] And, britheren, we preien ȝou, repreue ȝe [Om. R pr. m.] vnpesible men. Coumforte ȝe men of litil herte, resseyue ȝe sijke men, be ȝe pacient to alle men. [verse 15] Se ȝe, that no man ȝelde yuel for yuel to ony man; but euere more sue ȝe that that is good, ech to othere and to alle men. [verse 16] Euere more ioye ȝe; without [verse 18] ceessing preye ȝe; [verse 17] in alle thingis do ȝe thankyngis. For this is the wille of God in Crist Jhesu, in alle ȝou. [verse 19] Nyle ȝe [verse 20] quenche the spirit; nyle ȝe dispise pro|phecies. [verse 21] But preue ȝe alle thingis, and holde ȝe that thing that is good. [verse 22] Ab|steyne [And absteyne k.] ȝou fro al yuel spice. [verse 23] And God hym silf of pees make ȝou hooli bi alle thingis, that ȝoure spirit be kept hool, and soule, and bodi, without pleynt, in the comyng of oure Lord Jhesu Crist. [verse 24] God is trewe, that clepide ȝou, which

also schal do. [verse 25] Britheren, preye ȝe for vs. [verse 26] Grete ȝe wel alle britheren in hooli cos. [verse 27] Y coniure [charge b sec. m. comaunde gkα.] ȝou bi the Lord, that this pistle [epistle E.] be red to alle hooli britheren. [verse 28] The grace of oure Lord Jhesu Crist be with ȝou [ȝou alle k.] . Amen.
